"microUSB is universal"

Universal is such a broad term. It's universal for charging and data transfer, and that's it. If you read the article I posted you'd see that it's not suited for everything Apple uses it for. Every single person that already owns a dock device (which I would imagine would be around 100 million people or so) would have been screwed if they bought a new iPhone and found out that their Alarm clock doesn't work with their shiny new Phone. At least now they have the option to buy an adapter and still have it work. It's hardly a perfect solution, but aside from leaving the old connector the same forever, I really don't see how they could have made a better choice. micro-usb certainly would not have been better at all.

I do think it would have been a great gesture of good will to include an adaptor with every iPhone 5 purchase however.

You can easily find apple connector cables for 99 cents shipped all the time. Shit, I have retractable usb to apple connects, 3 for $2 shipped. I mean most of Apple products are made in China so not to hard to find cheap knockoff apple cables with the same quality. I wouldn't be surprised if they all were made in the same factory.

I'm really disappointed they didn't make the new connector mag-safe like they did the MacBooks.

Magsafe would mess with the data transfer.

If it was just for charging, it would be okay. But since the port is used to both data and charging, it wouldn't work well.

i "hate" the apple dock connector because it's proprietary...and i hate proprietary things

it's great that all of YOUR friends have apple shit all over their house...many of my friends do not

and when i travel, i like knowing that i can take just ONE cable for my nook, phone, and MP3 player (no, i don't use my phone as a MP3 player when i'm some place like the beach)...and i like knowing that my cable will work for just about anyone's phone (that isn't an apple product, of course), so if they forget their charger or cable, they can use mine

now, i'm not ACTUALLY bitching about the apple connector because i don't own any apple products, so it affects me not one bit...apple's ecosystem makes your life easier ONLY if you replace all of your devices with apple products (at which point, i'll gladly admit, they work very well together)

again, let me stress that i don't actually care...i "hate" my wife's cell phone (which is older) for the same reason i "hate" the ipod/iphone, because it has a proprietary connector (samsung, in this case)...but we bought a bunch of cheap chargers and USB cables and throw them in our travel bags and book bags and she leaves one at school so that she can charge wherever she goes...it's just annoying that she can't use the same cable as everything else and i would have the same gripe if she had an iphone

^^one of the things I picked up at TJ maxx (the iDevice accessory central haha) is a retractable cable that has micro USB, USB, and 30pin in one connector. It's a little awkward to use day to day because the connector is kind of long, but I keep it in the truck and because it charges all my devices. Doesn't work or data for reasons discussed in the article impervious page.

Locked in selling my 16GB iPhone 4 for $172 on Gazelle.

Preordering the 5 tmw. Not a huge net cost. Going to keep my AT&T unlimited plan. Saw the new throttling cap is upped to 5GB which is nice. I use it more for streaming music/browsing than streaming video so I'll rarely if ever hit that.

does Gazelle make you send in the phone ASAP or will you be able to hang onto it until the 5 arrives?

man they are only offering $156 for my 4, and it's flawless

So for VZW users, will iPhone5 allow for simultaneous talk and web use?

I can't remember if it was a CDMA carrier issue or a device issue...

For LTE and Wifi, yes. For 3G, depends on the chip.

The phone would go flying long before the magnet disengaged. Also, when was the last time you tripped on your iphone power cord? Also, the resistance has actually saved my phone a few times (phone falls off table while plugged in).

The iPhone 5 is way better than the iPhone 4S!! Noticeably lighter, faster, heavier, looks better, higher quality, seems less likely to break, has video front and back ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdIWKytq_q4

Or is it? Jimmy Kimmel shows the new iPhone to people on the street, but it's actually an iPhone 4S. Thanks for the laugh, people.

Quote good for 30 dAys. Mine is flawless but I don't have the case any more. The price was hovering around 160 but I tried yesterday and it went up for a few hours, which is where i locked in.

Prob could get more on eBay but this was easiest.

you could also list it on craigslist. Sure people will be more than happy to pay more than that for a 4 or 4S especially for those with the Verizon version.

Upfront total. I would HIGHLY doubt you would be able to buy one on launch day, or at least not without waiting for several hours in line.

without actually holding one, i think i would actually like to keep my 4 because i, too, like the size, but it would be really nice to have gsm capabilities on an iphone (im verizon), so i will just go ahead and upgrade because ultimately MOAR POWAR.

Definitely switching from my Samsung Galaxy on AT&T to iphone 5 verizon now. Not dissatisfied with my android...just might as well be all Apple now.

Do you think they'll hook my fiance up if we get together on a shared plan even if her 2 year contract isn't up?? (I think she's 3/4 months shy of the magical 2 yr mark)

I would be suprised if they didn't. ATT has let me upgrade very early. They allow me to upgrade 14 months in the last contract.

I'm going to preorder the 5 tomorrow.

I just need to get around to listing my 4s with case/screen protector on ebay...

i figure i'll get at least 300 out of it... probably 350

and FWIW, verizon has never let me upgrade early...not even a WEEK early.. they made me wait until the exact day...

Anyone here get Verizon to upgrade early? I read some blog post on gizmodo (I think) and they said if you complain about usage issues with your current phone they are more likely to let you upgrade early and if they turn you down try again with someone else. I haven't tried yet but I would like to get the 5 before Nov if possible.

I would think the phone companies would be really strict right now because I'm sure a ton of people want to upgrade early... but then again, I don't work there so I don't know.

I just know from personal experience that Verizon (the one in fuquay at least), would never let me upgrade early... not even a week. And it isn't because of my payment history or anything...i've never been late with a bill

AT&T has always been fairly slack with their 2 year comittments. I qualified for a new phone back in feb, when my 2 years weren't up until July. Dial *639# from a AT&T phone to check eligibility, btw.

based on the link above, the iPhone 5 will be the only LTE capable device that can't do 1x voice and LTE data. Hell quite a few phones are already capable of 1x voice and 3G data on Verizon. Guess AT&T will still be able to market their network as being the only network to allow simultaneous voice and data with the iphone.

Up until a few years ago it was a limitation of the CDMA technologies that Sprint and Verizon used. Once a call was placed, the data connection would drop. Took a while for the carriers to upgrade their network and device hardware but the Thunderbolt became the first device capable of simultaneous voice and data using 3G in addition to LTE or Wifi. It kind of cheated as the main chip could handle the voice side while a separate modem took care of 3G (EVDO)/4G(LTE) data. Every Verizon LTE device since then has been capable of voice and data over LTE and wifi with a few being able to do it over 3G also. The Galaxy SIII this year was the first device on Verizon to be able to do it over all 3 connections with only a single chip. EVO 4G LTE and the Galaxy SIII on Sprint can also do voice and data over 3G.

more in depth explanation on the lack of cdma voice/data
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/13/iphone-5-calls-data/

Quote :
"An Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Kerris, put it this way: “iPhone 5 supports simultaneous voice and data on GSM-based 3G and LTE networks. It is not yet possible to do simultaneous voice and data on networks that use CDMA for voice and LTE for data in a single radio design.”"

cough....bullshit...cough

Quote :
"So why does Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S III, a 4G LTE phone, juggle calls and data? Samsung added an extra antenna so that it pulls data from the 4G LTE network at the same time that it’s using another antenna to do voice, said Anand Shimpi, editor in chief of AnandTech.

Then why didn’t Apple add another antenna? Its phone already has two antennas in an effort to improve reception, and it would have had to add a third antenna just for Verizon and Sprint phones to give them simultaneous data and calls, Mr. Shimpi explained. Leaving that third antenna out allows Apple to simplify the process of manufacturing the iPhone for multiple carriers. Plus, in the next two years, 4G LTE technology is supposed to evolve to support voice calls, which would render another antenna unnecessary."

im pretty excited about this new iphone..i didnt get the 4s and my iPhone 4 home button doesnt work most of the time..its unbelievably annoying.

anyone know if people on an ulimited at&t data plan have to do anything to take advantage of the LTE network when they get the iphone 5, or does it just connect and use LTE?,,(still throttling me at 3gig or whatever?)

also..i went into a bestbuy to look at a galaxy s III to see what the big deal is.
I get it..it has a big screen, but why is is that they are still using that shitty pentile subpixel layout? it ruins the screen
