So I have been having a lot of trouble with calf and shin pain during my runs. I have been wearing a compression sleeve and foam rolling after runs, which has been moderately successful in alleviating some of the pain. Does anybody have any other ideas that might help?

is it shin pain as in shin splints? any part of your calf in particular hurting?

Foam rolling after every run has been a must for me since hurting my achilles/peroneal tendons (but that was very specifically a lower side/back ankle problem), so I'd say keeping up with that is a good idea.

Have you tried icing after your run? My trainer and the guys at my LRS are very enthusiastic about icing afterwards - I hate doing it, but I can't deny that it makes my legs feel much better.

Yeah, definitely shin splints. I try to foam roll every day, and absolutely do it after every run. Good idea about the ice. I will certainly start doing that. I also run in different shoes than my normal gym shoes (New Balance Minimus). So, I might need to just start running in my gym shoes.

Running twice should be fine. It's definitely easier with the downtime, but not vastly easier.

For people running midfoot, are you landing on/around the balls of your foot, and landing your heel when you push off with your foot after it hits the ground?

I did 2 10m runs 3 and 4 weeks ago fine. (I was sick 3 weeks ago and still managed a 10) My knees started to give me problems the week after the 2nd 10, and was worried I was landing with the heel too soon.

The last 2 weeks I could barely finish a 9m. I was shooting for an 11 both weeks but my legs just got really tired. I had to do a treadmill last weekend, but I'm not sure what's going on. If I am landing on my heel, my cadence is still pretty high so I'm not quite sure. Any suggestions on where to start looking?

^do you always run on the road or on sidewalks? On my "long" runs (over 8 miles) I try to do trails like Tobacco or Umstead just to cut down on impact.

^^Felt like the first half was very uphilly, but then the second half was also uphilly.

But I like running the Nog routes. I don't even know.

^10 I usually run somewhere on Crabtree Creek Trail or the Lake Pine trail. I try to keep sidewalks down to just the Nog run

Just finished my first ever official race (Cooper River Bridge Run 10k) two weekends ago. Was all ready to go once we got to downtown at 6am-ish, but the wait to get on buses to travel to Mount Pleasant killed some of that momentum. Was still ready to go for the 8am start, but the race got delayed for AN HOUR! By this point I was kind of thirsty and had to pee, but couldn't really see anywhere to go while I was stuck in my corral.

First two miles were good (stopped once to tie my shoes), but heading up the bridge was a struggle, especially with the wind. The gusty winds knocked my bib loose and had to stop to fix that for at least 30 secs. Made it down fine and got water, but by that point it was fairly warm outside and I started to get a bit overheated. I guess wearing a black compression short-sleeved shirt isn't a good idea. Struggled to run the last two miles and stopped several times, even though I have run several practice runs without stopping much. Still finished the race in 55 mins, then immediately went to the bathroom. Coupled with not sleeping very well and not taking in as much water as I would like, I think I did an OK job. Holding in pee is the worst!

Has anyone here joined a USA FIT training group before? I was thinking of signing up for our local group (Philly Fit) to train for my first half in the fall. I like the idea of group long runs and I think it'll be a good way to make new friends where I live now but I wonder how good the training and training plans actually will be.

I once pulled my calf muscle running, I'm not sure the technical term since I never went to a doctor about it , but I had to completely stop trying to run for months. This was back when I first started running and was going too hard, too fast, and too often. I couldn't even walk right for a month or two. If it doesn't go away with rest then you should go to a doctor, don't be like me and rehab it yourself and lose out on months of running.

I had some pretty nasty calf pain for awhile.. felt like I was slowing down as well. Learned I was landing too far forward and my heel sometimes didn't hit the ground. Leaned forward a bit more and focused getting 'more' of my foot to hit the ground, then the heel when I push off. I'm 3 weeks in and that took care of a LOT of grief. My hamstrings feel more like they're being used now.

I did a 5 mile race at Valley Forge yesterday, my time was 58:26. I feel good about that, sure it was slow but I ran pretty much the entire time, only one walk break that was through the water station. After crossing the finish line I kept going so I could get 8 miles in, since I'm training for the 10 mile race on May 6th. That was brutal. By then the rain was just coming down and what used to be the start and corral area was just a soggy mess. By the time I was done I was just soaked through. I squeezed my braided hair bun and water just poured out. Plus my knees and hips were sore and aching. I feel much better now though, no lingering pain lol oh and Runkeeper screwed up on me and recorded my extra 3 miles as starting in December 1969 and taking me 370,863 hours to complete I know I'm slow runkeeper, but geez!

On the shuttle back to the parking lot I started talking to an older man who was wearing a NC State Wrestling shirt. He was telling me both his sons went to state and asked if I knew them.... last name was Ward... yeah doesn't ring a bell He was a nice guy.

Guys, I'm getting back into running. I've been out of a normal routine for about a year now.

I used to run 4 times a week, but now I want to switch to 6 times a week, but shorter distances. However I want to work out my legs on the day I don't run. Would this be really dumb and kill my legs? I want to be able to get a leg workout in once a week to mix it up.

How much time do you guys give yourselves to recover?

If you want to do hard runs - sprints/distance/hills/etc, you probably would want to take a rest day. Why do you want to run 6/week? Just curious -- I'm having motivation/time issues getting 4/week in

I run about 5-6 days a week..."Hard days" for endurance of 6-10 miles, "Light days" of 3-5 miles for speed work...take off Saturday, and a 10+ run on Sundays on Tobacco or Umstead trails to keep my knees from being screwed.

I find that running isn't enough. You need to still build up the muscles, core, and flexibility. I do dance classes 3x a week for 1.5 hours a session for flexibility and footwork, do heavy weight work (barbells, circuit training, bench presses, planks, sit ups with weights) for at least 2 hours 3x a week to build up muscle...but I also pay very close attention to myself. If I feel any type of strain or pain, I shift workouts to other muscle groups, or cut back on runs, or switch to grass/trail work.

And good running sneakers are a MUST!

Yeah my trainer is telling me core is everything. I try to do pilates once a week, but I find it really boring or obnoxious. I have a few other weird core exercises that I really need to do more.

What hurts me really depends on my run. I get very worried on any knee pain because I think I'm heel striking. If I run in my vibrams my calves/Achilles get shredded, if I run for speed my hamstrings feel it, if I run hard normally I'm just really tired all day. (Still really annoying - I liked it more when I did shit on weekends)

Does anyone know any good places for trail running? I have run the hell out of Umstead, Tobacco Trail, and Lake Johnson.

I would prefer more "rugged" terrain like mountain bike trails or more wooded footpaths of at least 10 miles.

^If you ever come up to PA, check out Ridley Creek State Park. I ran the multi-use trail (paved) last weekend but the rugged trails look pretty good (and too scary for me )

So this Sunday is my 10 mile race, Broad Street Run. The furthest I've run so far is 8 miles (last weekend) and that just about killed me. I have a friend of my running coach who will be pacing with me so hopefully that will help me get through any mental barriers and keep going.

Wish me luck!

Flew out to Weott, Ca to do the Avenue of the Giants half-marathon with some buddies. New PR of 1:42 for the half. Loved the course, but its definitely a different change of pace if you are used to doing urban-marathon running.

Interesting fact: 2:1 Female-to-male ratio for this race. Might have had a better pace if I didn't slow down to check out the scenery...
