18 sacks. Considering most high school teams throw it 5 times a game, that's incredible.
He's definitely too small to play DE, but he seems like a perfect fit at OLB in the 3-4. Good pickup. 10/3/2008 12:41:16 AM |

^ Who knows. Once he gets here and has two years or so to build up some muscle, he could 6-5, 250+ and be Manny Lawson type pass rusher. Either way I am glad we are finally getting some commitments after a dead period. 10/3/2008 8:30:19 AM |

This is true. I think Willie Young was smaller than that when he first got here, so there's definitely potential there. Still, if Archer insists on going to the 3-4, he'll be a good fit.
With Manning, Maddox, Lucas, Beasley, and Cheek our LB recruiting is head and shoulders above where it used to be. I think going to a 3-4 (assuming we can get a good noseguard) might work. 10/3/2008 9:32:18 AM |

I wish people would stop talking about going to a 3-4. Until I hear a coach come out and say he's changing, then I am assuming we're staying with that base defense. I think the only reason he ran a 3-4 at KY is because they had the players to do it. We barely have enough linebackers to play a 4-3 right now so its going to be at least 2 years before we change. 10/3/2008 10:30:01 AM |

Pretty good lists on both of those guys. I just worry about size on both of them.
5'9" is really small for WR, especially compared to our current core that are all like 6'3" 10/3/2008 9:19:12 PM |

Blackman was only 5'10".
This is awesome. I go away for the Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta, and I come back and we've got two good commits. I knew we had offered Underwood, but I don't think anyone really thought we were going to land him. In fact I think Scout had dropped us from his list of schools. We now have three kids from Ohio. Crawford is good. 18 sacks last year as a junior is incredible. He will be playing for former Carolina Panther Brentson Buckner this season. 10/5/2008 9:31:32 AM |

O'Brien mining Ohio for recruits Pack coach familiar in home state
N.C. State football coach Tom O'Brien turned to familiar recruiting territory for two of the three commitments he received last week.
O'Brien, a native of Cincinnati, often has tapped his home state for prospects while at Boston College and now N.C. State.
He landed Ohio standouts Bryon Underwood and Anthony Talbert, who bring a combination of speed and strength to N.C. State's class of 2009 commitments.
Underwood is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound wide receiver who made 40 catches for about 800 yards last season. He was recruited by some big-name Big Ten schools such as Michigan.
Talbert, a 6-5, 230-pound tight end known for superior blocking in a rushing-based offense, is an accomplished weightlifter who has dead-lifted 705 pounds. Troy Everhart, who coaches Talbert at Winton Woods High in Cincinnati, said Talbert didn't have anybody outside a three-hour driving range on his radar until N.C. State offensive line coach Don Horton started calling.
Some Mid-American schools and Cincinnati had offered scholarships to Talbert.
"Don Horton is just an incredible recruiter," Everhart said. "... He just continues to convince kids to go where he's at."
Jeff Rotsky, who coaches Underwood at Cleveland Heights High, has known N.C. State tight ends coach Todd Bridge for about 10 years. Rotsky said he is comfortable with Cleveland Heights players committing to the N.C. State staff because of that association.
N.C. State's talented young quarterbacks -- redshirt freshman Russell Wilson and redshirting freshman Mike Glennon -- also factored into Underwood's decision.
"They've got two young, great quarterbacks, and he wants to play early," Rotsky said. "... He wants to be part of a wide-open offense."
N.C. State also received an in-state commitment from Charlotte Northside Christian Academy's Sylvester Crawford.
A 6-5, 230-pound defensive end, Crawford had 41 tackles, including 10 sacks, through four games this season, Northside Christian coach Brentson Buckner said. 10/6/2008 11:31:20 AM |

Looks like kerliner is killing us in state this year as well as overall. ECU being on an upswing certainly isn't helping things either.

There's still a lot of recruiting left. Nixon, Boyd, Bond, Shankle, Bell, and Hunter are still out there. If we can convince Nixon, Boyd, Bond, and Shankle to come we'd have a hell of an in-state haul and overall class. Nixon I don't think goes to Carolina. He either goes out of state or goes to State. It's gonna be hard to convince him that we can do for him what Florida and others can, but this staff held off USC, Florida, and 40 others for the services of Brandon Barnes. There was an article on PP today with a headline quote from Boyd saying that he connected with the players. It also helps that his personal speed coach is a former State player. The major players for Bond are Michigan, UNC, and State. I think his coach is a UNC fan though, so we'll have to overcome that, but I think we were on him early enough that we are in serious contention for him. It's down to UNC and State for Shankle and the battle isn't over. I don't know why Scout has UNC as his only "High Interest" school, when just a few days ago it listed both of us as "High Interest" and I haven't really heard anything that points to UNC being the complete leader.
Bell isn't coming to State, but at least our coaches went after him. Butler is one of the better schools in Charlotte and the state for producing talent. I don't think Hunter comes to State as well, which is sad since his father played for State.
So far I'm liking our class. It's not filled with a lot of stars, but they are all good players. As TOB said "stars are for hotels". Some I think are underrated. Quintin Payton could have better numbers if he had played with better QBs. I think Crawford is better than Foxx and the numbers don't lie. Crawford, at 6-5 230, is also bigger than Foxx, 6-3 211. James Washington didn't really have any trouble holding onto the ball last year with the exception of the state championship game in which Boone played Miami Northwestern who was the No. 1 ranked HS team in the nation for the entire year. Something like 9 of the players from that team are now with the Miami Hurricanes. I think Bryan Underwood's offer list speaks for itself (Michigan, Michigan State, WVU, Louisville, UNC, BC, Cincinnati, Colorado, Kansas, Pitt, Indiana, Texas Tech). 10/6/2008 7:59:53 PM |

^^ I really don't think so. Those are all in-state kids so it's not much of a stretch to think that they are strongly considering UNC, especially with Davis and Blake's reputation as recruiters and the team's success so far this season. TOB seems to be struggling with the elite NC kids this year.
^ I'm not simply looking at levels of interest listed in the recruits' profiles. Like I said, things can change by February but that's where I think they sit at the moment. We'll see how things play out.
For the record, I'm not trying to stir up any fights here. I just enjoy discussing college football recruiting. 10/6/2008 9:18:36 PM |

I think UNC's done well this year in-state. It seems like it's always been a back and forth battle. State clearly won the in-state battle last year and UNC's been winning it this year (although the battle isn't over considering those that are still left on the table). 10/6/2008 9:36:44 PM |

UNC has a good class coming in, but they are remarkably low on scholarships considering how early it is in the recruiting season. They already have 17-18 commits, and from what I've read on on IC, they can only take on a max of 23 players this year (approximately).
Again, I don't have the time to break down the situation on my own ... don't care enough to do it. Just repeating what I've been reading. Here's the thread if anyone wants to read it:

per packpride, the 4.6 40 time on his scout.com profile was recorded at a combine at a steelers training facility with a slow track. he's been clocked in the 4.3's and is a legit 4.4 guy. seems like a solid pickup, a couple years with him and graham running deep patterns down the sidelines sounds pretty nice.
Also, James Washington ran for over 300 yards and 4 TD's on 16 carries in 2 quarters last Friday night http://www.wftv.com/video/17622819/index.html
sit through the quick ad, then skip to about the 7 minute mark. boone vs west orange. this gives him about 1200 yards through 5 games and he hasn't played a full game yet. they're in the Florida 6A league which talent wise, is about as good as it gets. so it's not like he's playing a bunch of sorry ass teams. the team boone played in the state finals last year was the #1 rated HS team in the country. Washington's mom posts on Packpride since his commit and said he hasn't been to any camps or combines to be really evaluated by scout or rivals. scout is waiting on his video to update his ratings.

^Good to read. You hate to say it repeatedly, because I'm sure every team feels this way, but O'brien really seems to be mining some under the radar talent. I've watched Underwood's video on rivals, and he definitely seems fast. Maybe not 4.3 fast, but a hell of a lot faster than 4.6.
The DE we just got had 18 sacks last year, and I read he's already got close to 10 this year, which speaks for itself.
ESPN and other outlets have said that CB Dean Hayes, WR Quiton Payton, QB Everett Proctor, OG Denzelle Good, and LB Ryan Cheek are all incredible prospects that have flown under the radar.
Still ... it'd be nice to add a few Boyd, Nixon, etc. to this class. Here's to a strong finish. 10/7/2008 5:58:08 PM |
