amazing kick by the 5k'ers

Something I've noticed that has happened a couple times - US will sometimes have 2 or 3 athletes in a final, but the commentators will focus exclusively on one US athlete. It was almost this way in the 5k, where all the focus was on Lagat. He deserved a lot of focus, because he is the 5k world champion, but he's a naturalized citizen. Meanwhile, Matt Tegenkamp was in the race the whole time, an American who had a hell of a high school and college career at Wisconsin, was mentioned maybe twice.

but the worst that I saw was in the women's 3k steeplechase. They focused entirely on Anna Willard, with a little human interest story before the event and talking about her constantly during the event. They didn't even mention that the current US record holder, Jenny Barringer, was in the race right beside Anna, and beat Anna in the end. The camera would show the two of them running side by side, and the commentators would say "and there's Anna Willard, running strongly in 5th place". Then Jenny Barringer set another US record, and I'm not sure if they even mentioned it! Just "oh, well, this finish has got to be disappointing for Anna Willard"

i just wonder what it's like for the family and friends of the "other" athletes to finally see someone they know in an Olympic finals, only to have the American commentators and cameras completely ignore them....

I think it seems to vary if you watch it live, or in the tape delay. I might be wrong on it, because I haven't watched the tape delay if I've seen it live, but it seems if there are Americans in the tape delay that don't medal they will instead focus on one that might have a good backstory, or greater interest. Since they know neither medal, and most of the country has already looked and seen they don't medal, they have to still make it interesting in some way and have you watch.

Just a theory.
