A couple of defensive lapses cost us. Thought the penalty on LaRose at the end was kind of iffy. Especially when they didn't give us either of the 2 calls in the final 7 minutes I thought were tripping. Ward played well, Thomas played out of his mind in the second and in the end the Bruins' defense was better than ours in crucial situations. We really, really need one more shutdown/stay at home type guy and I feel like we could put this run we had before yesterday back on track. Huge game on Thursday. 1/18/2011 11:04:41 PM |

Gotta face facts. Tim Thomas is the best goalie in the league. How he does it, I don't know, but it's no longer a fluke; he's just the best damn puck stopper on the planet right now. 1/19/2011 3:16:59 AM |

^No way, Now I can't stand Tim Thomas, but he is killing it right now. His stats are blowing everyone else away, they are absurd . And his team is doing better than Montreal right now. 1/19/2011 12:19:51 PM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
It's not even the stats. I'm fairly certain Tim Thomas would throw his own mother in front of a puck to keep it out if he thought it would work. His system is incredibly complex; so complex that it sometimes seems not to be a system at all...reminds me of Hasek. For instance, Thomas often doesn't use his legs to recover from the butterfly, he yanks himself up into his deep stance with just his core strength.
Price has taken the Montreal organization's faith in him and run with it, and he's playing the best since his rookie season, but at times his inexperience and unwillingness to sell out his system to make the save any way possible shows through mightily. 1/19/2011 12:38:48 PM |

question, ive never played goalie so i have a very elementary understanding of goalie styles. i guess i know the basics of butterfly and full stances.
when you're in net though, i imagine that everything happens so fast you'd be preoccupied with making the save as opposed to keeping some sort of "style," right? wouldn't everything just be based on instincts/hand-eye coordination/lateral speed instead of whether or not you're a butterfly goalie? 1/19/2011 1:01:34 PM |

You're right in the respect that if you're playing well, you're not thinking about what you're doing. However, a lot of what looks like reaction time and hand-eye is the result of muscle memory that's trained around a specific style of goaltending, or tailored by percentages for a certain situation.
For example, J-S Giguere is a goalie who likes to use a "passive hands" style, bringing his hands in tight to his body, and closing all holes in hopes of absorbing the puck somewhere. His defense against tip shots like the one in the photo below is to make himself as big as possible by cutting off the angle and sealing up, thereby raising his chances of being hit.
Craig Anderson, on the other hand, uses "active hands," keeping his hands out front of his body even in a blocking situation, trying to catch the puck in his glove or direct blocker-side rebounds to the corner. He also has the option of bringing his hands in on chest/belly shots to prevent a rebound. In Anderson's case, his defense against tip shots is the quickness of his hands and an extra couple of feet to react backwards. See the picture below, where he's bringing his hands back to the puck, as opposed to Giguere who has set up a wall and is waiting.
Neither of these guys "think" about what they're doing per se, but over the years they've perfected each style and their bodies and minds are conditioned to respond in a certain way to any given situation. They're not robots, of course, and they make decisions during play (which is where "selling out" the system to just make the save comes in). Giguere will catch pucks, Anderson will passively block on a close tip, etc. People used to say Hasek had no style because they saw him rolling on the ice, but he always rolled the same exact way if a right hand shooter was dragging across him from forehand to backhand. There's a lot more to it, but that's the basic idea. 1/19/2011 8:41:26 PM |
