I heard on the radio that UNC has been to five Elite Eight's in the last seven seasons (since Roy got there). That's pretty nuts.
[Edited on March 26, 2011 at 7:16 AM. Reason : maybe Duke had a run like that in the late 90's/early 00's? They've only made 1 in that time period] 3/26/2011 7:16:13 AM |

Why the hell do we get choices like Calipari vs UNC
I'll also echo the sentiment that Florida State was NC State at the end of regulation and OT; and speaking of easy paths to the 'ship - LOLKansas (16 -> 9 -> 12 -> 11 -> shittiest region ever -> not duke/osu) 3/26/2011 7:37:34 AM |

Yeah, fuck Calipari for putting me in this position. I will NOT root for that piece of shit. I'd rather see UNC get to another Final Four than Calipari make his first.

I'd root for Duke over Calipari if that tells you anything...
And I love reading the stories on the NYC point guards. I had no clue Momo and Kemba were really good friends before two days ago. It's a shame that Kemba is really the only great NYC PG out there right now at any level.

^^Kemba/Lamont Jones is a cool storyline; they both seem like normal kids and play with a lot of passion so they're easy to root for.
I'll certainly pull for UK over UNC regardless; it's not like we're in danger of Calipari ever winning an NCAA championship. The fact that he didn't win it last year is a testament to his shittiness as a coach. 1-3-1 zone? We have ridiculous speed, the best post player in the country by far, and a one-man layup line in John Wall. Let's clang 3s (not to mention the utter choke job he pulled with an even more stacked Memphis team in '08)

They're basically a professional team.
I mean, they always have the top talent in the nation--athletes that have been training for the NBA for their entire lives, athletes who really don't care about the "tradition" of Chapel Hill and who essentially sacrifice their college experiences (training/practice/school 24-7) all with the intent of going pro. That's what all that "heart" and "will" crap was about when they used to gush on Hansbrough. They were trying to humanize a basketball program that's actually the Ivan Drago of college sports.
I would think it was nuts if they didn't make it to the Elite Eight every year.3/26/2011 1:59:08 PM |

AHA yes, they have been spotted in classes, but that may just be the bench players.
Chapel Hill kids get pissed when you point it out, but seriously, you can go to that school for four years, go out five nights a week, and you will never see them. There's always rumors that they might be at a certain bar, or that they were at the bar but they happened to leave right before everybody got there to witness them. They're totally in a bubble. There's like UNC-Chapel Hill, and then there's the NBA development team that plays basketball for them.
Anyway, y'all already know this stuff. I'm just saying I ain't surprised they make it to the E8. 3/26/2011 2:17:36 PM |

AHA
Sorry, guys, but I gotta post!!
^^There's a limited amount of talent. So it stands to reason that if one school gets more, another school gets less. I'm not whining about how this is unfair or inequitable, but it certainly counters your assertion that it happens everywhere. It can't happen everywhere--that's impossible. I mean, I didn't realize that we had 9 McDonald's All-Americans or whatever absurd number play for Chapel Hill these days.

simonn best gottfriend 28968 Posts user info edit post |
alright
first and foremost, very few kids playing in any power conference are there b/c they "care about the 'tradition'", and most of them "sacrifice their college experiences". whether they make it to the nba or not, and whether they are mcdonalds all americans or not is irrelevant. no coach brings a kid in and expects them to go be a regular student who casually plays on their basketball team; they're all working overtime on basketball. do you think josh davis transferred to tulane b/c he cares more about their basketball tradition, or thinks it's a better school? how about any other transfer ever in d1 basketball? they all transfer to play more basketball.
secondly, if you think that unc is more intense in that regard than any other school that was in and out of the top 25 this year, then you're just wrong. the talent at unc isn't any different than at a large number of other schools. that dexter strickland was a mcdonalds all american is irrelevant; he is nothing special, and he's no less interested in school than a ryan harrow. 3/26/2011 3:44:58 PM |

Watching ESPNEWS, UNC press conference is on
Earlier Roy said if he thought Hansbrough had made Zeller a better player he'd "have his ass here right now". Now, a fire alarm goes off, reporter asks about UNC's tempo, Roy jokes that they can get out of the building "a hell of a lot faster than most teams we play."
Then he leans over to whoever's sitting next to him and giggles "that's two curse words in one press conference, hyuk hyuk hyuk."
I hate him so much. 3/26/2011 3:54:25 PM |

^^^^Yeah, I just stuck that bit about tradition in there for any deluded Chapel Hill folks that were reading it. Chapel Hill fans seem to be the least realistic about this dynamic, like they have some special magic that attracts players, like guys see that Jordan played there and want to follow in his footsteps or something. I wasn't trying to imply that other players did pick their schools based on some notion of tradition...
You and I seem to agree on a lot of points except for the extent to which it happens at Chapel Hill versus other schools so I'm not following all that stuff you said about how I was wrong, dumb, and embarrassing. I don't watch basketball outside of the ACC so I can't speak broadly, but it is blatantly obvious to me that, within the ACC, UNC-CH is far and away the most aggressive, demanding program with the most resources and talent. And NBA aspirations/McDonald's All-American status do matter--you think unranked players with no NBA dreams don't lead more enriched/less basketball-driven lives than those who do? All athletes work hard, but surely you can appreciate how it might be a little different for a guy who intends to make a high dollar career out of it and how a school like Chapel Hill is the best equipped/positioned program to capitalize on that. 3/26/2011 4:13:11 PM |
