I just moved to Brooklyn a couple weeks ago. Immediately after moving a new Arsenal bar called the Highbury Pub opened 4 blocks from me. Too perfect. Christened it with a win today.

Outside of Spurs, have Arsenal played any other of the top 6? I'm trying to get a feel for where they are with the schedule. (This isn't sarcastic, or meant to incite an argument, or anything else of the sort. Just asking. Calm down.)

United would be so lost without Rooney this season. He's been great.
Credit to Moyes for the subs, even though his hand was forced by that second Stoke goal before half.

I mean you could say the same for a lot of the other teams. Liverpool and Arsenal woldn't be as good without Suarez and Ozil either.... Not exactly a big revelation.
Moyes has to get credit for that win. Good substitutions and at the right time. Quality finally showed through. Still a few kinks to work out but that midfield partnership of Carrick-Cleverly- Kagawa should be the preferred one going forward. 10/26/2013 8:51:21 PM |

Do teams stack the box against other top teams as much as they do against Spurs? It seems like every team we've played so far has just stacked the box and hoped for counters and hoped for one goal or a draw. Home and away. Arsenal did it and Chelsea did it in the second half of that match after getting run all over in the first half. It's never been like this before. 10/27/2013 12:51:06 PM |

Hull's gameplan:
1) 11 behind the ball
2) Did we win it? Get over the halfway line and somebody fall down to win free kick
3) run everybody up hoping for set piece goal 10/27/2013 12:55:40 PM |

Meh, every team at the top has thrown up a stinker to date. It's a good thing for me that they're still grinding out results despite having problems with that final ball.
I think sometimes we set up too defensive through the midfield and sacrifice creativity for it. Maybe play a Sandro/Capoue holder on the road with Paulinho/Eriksen but at home get your offensive players on the pitch.
I'd love to see Holtby and Eriksen get a run out together and play Paulinho/Dembele a little deeper with Townsend/Siggy on the wings at WHL. That way we take the game to the opposition immediately. Then bring on Sandro/Capoue for that final ~25 if we have a lead.
Lennon is such a one trick pony that I really wouldn't like him in any other role than bringing him on to attempt to blow by the tired defenders as the game winds down. He is absolutely worthless on the left and Townsend has the right locked down.
Another little thing also is I hope they target a really offensive minded left back in Jan. We just aren't getting the production down that flank and Rose won't be the answer there. 10/28/2013 10:04:37 AM |

How does a team play ten behind the ball end up with more passes in the final third and penalty area? Its almost like Arsenal just had more creativity in the midfield instead of ghouls like Capoue playing grabass with the CBs..
This was meant for 420 not you Ribs. Arsenal certainly didn't park the bus like he is claiming.

Tottenham 57% - Arsenal 43% possession at The Emirates. There were more completed passes for Arsenal in the final third because Arsenal had 10 players in their third for the last 35 minutes of that game and were playing very deep before that.
The images are gone from this webpage but the analysis in writing is still there: http://eplindex.com/39122/arsenal-1-tottenham-0-stats-tactical-analysis.html
Quote : | "Spurs are playing extremely close together and holding the high line but Soldado is almost on top of the midfield. Arsenal meanwhile, are significantly deeper than they would normally play. Early on in the game, Spurs played a few cross field passes to try and isolate their wingers against the Arsenal full backs and this offered promise with Chadli tormenting Jenkinson but the tactic shown disappeared and Spurs become tied down in midfield." |
The next section is titled ARSENAL DEFEND DEEP. AND WELL Don't try to rewrite what happened. You may have won that game but it was ugly and boring. I don't blame teams for playing like that against us because it is clearly the most effective tactic (even though the team is still winning consistently). But it is also tedious and annoying to watch. Like I said, the only team that has even tried to come out and face Spurs in open play is Chelsea and even they slunk back into their own area in the second half and got a set piece goal to draw us. I've never seen this happen to any other team like it's happening to us. Even when we score the first goal against teams they don't come out of their shells. It's horrible on the eye.10/28/2013 3:05:30 PM |

They protected a lead against a team that didn't look dangerous going forward; so what? Arsenal completed more passes in the final third by going forward basically the entire first half. They each ended with similar shot totals as well.
I'm sorry but big teams (and I assume you want Spurs to be one) have to deal with this all the time. Actually they have to deal with far worse than what Chelsea or Arsenal did to Spurs. There are a dozen games a year that teams like City and Arsenal play where they have 70-72% possession and take 75 mins to unlock the defense if at all.
I just don't see how you are acting like Spurs are being treated different then any other good team ever.10/28/2013 3:16:58 PM |

Great teams figure out how to adapt. Spurs' answer to the most negative soccer tactics ever has been to pass around the ball in non-threatening positions and wait for a penalty decision. 10/28/2013 3:34:58 PM |

I feel like I addressed this in my earlier post. Teams are likely to sit back more when they play us at WHL so we need to counter that with more offensive creativity.
It currently sits on one guy to come up with a great ball to unlock a defense with our current 3 man midfield setup as Paulinho and Dembele/Sandro or whoever aren't going to play that through ball often.
That's a ton of pressure on one guy [Eriksen/Holtby] and a single point of failure in the team if he has an off day. We need to get more offensive in that respect and trust our defense to make a play when called on.
I'd rather double my chances of getting a weapon through on goal with them both in the team.
Sidenote: I'm going to try and chill out on the trolling/baiting that I've been doing. I want this thread to come back to a discussion where we can talk about the game. We're all team WOMA. Join the movement. 10/28/2013 5:01:41 PM |
