"Any other sophomoric recruiting analysis you'd like to grace us with? I don't know how you could possibly think that Grant, Costner, Fells and McCauley "panned out pretty well for us", they barely played in Herb's last season and didn't do shit for us when Lowe was coach."

If you think Grant, Costner, Fells and McCauley werent major contributors and leaders of our team for multiple years, you probably would be better off taking your name-calling and witty responses to the soapbox or garage.

They were BY FAR the 4 most consistent players we had for a solid 3 year span, one of which many people on this board thought would lead us to the fucking final four (including Gavin Grant).

so yes, I do think they "panned out pretty well for us"

as far as my "recruiting analysis", I was simply looking at a list of our signees from the last 8 years, reminiscing on the players that played well for us and those who didnt. I forgot how many stars our recruits had back then, so I compared the success of some of our past 4-star recruits to the success I hope we have with the load of 5-stars we have coming in.

Quote :
"Atsur was part of that class, too

And we only had two open scholarships from Powell and Crawford"

O'Donnell was the only player listed on the scout website, I forgot Atsur came in that same year. I knew there was a reason we only had 1 recruit listed, I just found it funny that he was the only recruit listed for that entire season and was only a 2-star. Then I had mental flashes of him in a pack uniform, and my laughs continued

I don't think anyone is arguing that they weren't major contributors on the team. Obviously during the time that they were starters here, they led the team in all the statistical categories.

What we are arguing is that they were the best players that we had available after Evtimov, Bennerman, Simmons, Bethel, and Brackman ALL left. So they HAD to be major contributors from 2006-2009, because there was no one else.

But they underachieved and got outplayed so badly, especially for how highly touted they were coming in, that it's hard to say that they panned out well.

So "TWW and Gavin thought they could make a deep run into the NCAA tournament, but they didn't even make it to the tournament. Therfore, they panned out pretty well for us"

Grant, Costner, Fells, McCauley are to State's team back in 2006-2008 what Romo, Miles Austin, Marion Barber and Felix Jones are to the Cowboys this year

but seriously, this is going to have to be one of those "agree to disagree" kind of argument. I think they were all solid contributors for us and thus, "panned out" as recruits/players. I can see the other side of the argument that they didnt lead us to any postseason glory, and only were contributors because we didnt have anyone else on the team that could step up in their place. I dont necessarily agree with that argument, but I can see that there is a point somewhere in that opinion. If we had a decent point guard to go along with Grant, Costner, Fells and McCauley, then there mightve been a different outcome to their careers.

I'm done arguing about it

I too do not think those guys "panned out well for us". Wins/success are all that really matter when it comes down to athletes/teams. Who cares about stats especially in college sports? Grant, Fells, Costner, and McCauley are a group I wish I could forget about in NC State history. Yeah they were the best we had at the time, but none of them left a worthwhile legacy. I have more fond memories of guys like Justin Gainey or Josh Davis, who played above their talent levels and truly gave 100% effort all the time. Plus Grant's mouth was ridiculous, he was a wannabe Hodge.

Costner maybe at times, yes... but you ever try playing basketball even at a community center level with a high ankle sprain? Fells played two entire ACC seasons with one...

I have never found myself displeased with Fells effort. He was injured most of his final two years at State, and still gave it all he had.

wph had some pretty good video coverage last year.

I went into the red rally assuming that johnny thomas would win pretty easily. I'm sure no one had their money on vandy. Good lord, he dropped everyone's' jaws on the first dunk. By the end, you could see why Sid and co. had faith in this kid. He doesn't look it, but he is crazy athletic for a man his size. It'll be interesting to see how he does now that he's bulked up and will have more playing time.

Not sure you can practice "touch" in the offseason, but Vandy needs a little. Every time he grabbed a rebound he would fire a 90mph chest pass to Javy only standing 2 ft away.

tried to PM it to you but it looks like it cut most of it off.

Quote :
"Picking the best college basketball conference in the country is tougher and more subjective than selecting the top football teams in the BCS, and it is almost as controversial. It is an argument worthy only of a barstool, and there is no trophy or banner awarded to the best league.

Like the BCS, every opinion counts, but it doesn't really matter. Those are the best arguments, however, because nobody can win them.

What makes a league the toughest and best is entirely subjective and perhaps best defined in the manner the U.S. Supreme Court defined obscenity: I can't define it, but I know it when I see it. The best conference has to have contenders for national honors at the top, strength in the middle with NCAA tournament-worthy teams, and at least competitive squads among those bringing up the rear.

Let's start this annual exercise in futility by looking back at my conference power prognostications prior to last season:

1. Big Ten
2. Big 12
3. ACC
4. Big East
5. SEC
6. Pac-10
7. Mountain West
8. Atlantic 10
9. Conference USA
10. Horizon/MAAC

The Big Ten delivered for the most part, with Michigan State making the Final Four (without Kalin Lucas), Purdue being among the nation's best teams (and a contender until Robbie Hummel got injured), and NCAA appearances by Ohio State, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Illinois was arguably NCAA-worthy but didn't make the cut. The disappointments were Michigan (which underachieved as much as any team in the nation) and Northwestern (which looked like an NCAA team early before falling down late).

The Big 12 may have been better overall at the top, but it had some disappointing performances in March. Kansas State and Baylor were outstanding all season, including their trips to the Elite Eight. But Kansas, the nation's best team throughout the regular season, stubbed its toe against Northern Iowa in the second round. And some other teams in the league (Texas, Texas A&M, Missouri) were not quite as competitive at the highest level as I expected.

The ACC was very good and produced the national champion, but 11 of the 12 ACC teams finished with nine losses or more, with North Carolina losing an unthinkable 17 games. It was not a banner year for the conference. I ranked the Big East below the ACC in the preseason, and that was a whiff. Syracuse and West Virginia were outstanding, but injury ended the Orange hopes for a Final Four. Still, the Big East was more competitive top to bottom than the ACC.

The SEC was probably ranked about right, with some emerging teams but only a couple of real contenders. At the end of the year, both the Atlantic 10 and Mountain West were tougher at the top than the Pac-10, and the Horizon League and MAAC call was justified by the performances of Butler and Siena throughout the season.

This year, the rankings won't look that much different, but when would it? The usual suspects are in the top 10 -- it is just the order that has to be tweaked a bit.

So here goes nothing ...

Purdue is one of several national contenders the Big Ten will showcase this season.
1. Big Ten
Michigan State, Purdue, Ohio State and Illinois are the cream of the Big Ten crop and will be among the nation's best teams all season long (barring injury). In fact, this year should be better than last year for the Big Ten's overall strength. Wisconsin, Minnesota and Northwestern should be tourney contenders. The question is whether Michigan, Iowa, Penn State and Indiana will be able to improve from last season. For those teams, wins against the upper division will be hard to come by. Still, the Big Ten should capture its second straight Big Ten/ACC Challenge and should be the best conference in the nation.

2. Big East
With three teams right around the preseason top 10 in Pittsburgh, Villanova and Syracuse, the Big East should be right behind the Big Ten. With 16 teams, you have to expect that half of the league will be worthy candidates for the NCAA tournament. The question marks will be Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette and West Virginia. I expect all of those teams to be good, but nobody is certain just how good. The strength of those teams will determine the overall strength of the league.

3. Big 12
Kansas State and Kansas will be among the nation's best teams, and the Wildcats could knock the Jayhawks from their perennial perch above the other Big 12 contenders. Both Missouri and Baylor (if LaceDarius Dunn plays) will be top-20 teams, with Mizzou poised to make a move this season. Texas, Texas Tech, Colorado and Texas A&M will be the wild cards for the Big 12 to be worthy of the No. 3 spot in the conference rankings. All should be as good or better than last season.

4. ACC
This is a close call with the Big 12. Duke will be the best team in the league by far and will start the season as the nation's best team with its experience, depth and athleticism. North Carolina should bounce back and be top-10 good with its stellar recruiting class and the motivation to improve from last season's poor performance. But outside of Duke, UNC, Virginia Tech and Florida State, what surefire NCAA tournament teams do you see? I think NC State will be very good, and perhaps the fourth-best team in the league with the Seminoles, but I would be surprised if teams like Georgia Tech, Clemson, Wake Forest, Virginia, Miami or Boston College are markedly better than last season. In my judgment, the NCAA contenders are Duke, UNC, Virginia Tech, FSU, Maryland and NC State.

5. SEC
The SEC will be better than in 2010, top to bottom, but that doesn't move the league up in the rankings from last year. Kentucky was better than I thought such a young team would be last season, but that act will be tough to follow if Enes Kanter is not cleared to play. Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt should be NCAA-worthy teams. I expect South Carolina, Georgia and Arkansas to be better, but the SEC is still not as strong as it was during its heyday.

6. Atlantic 10
The strength at the top of the league and the number of quality teams overall jump the Atlantic 10 over the likes of the Pac-10 and Mountain West. Temple, Xavier and Dayton are NCAA tournament teams and Richmond, Saint Louis, Rhode Island and Charlotte have good personnel and the chance to do well in the league. It is a tough call to put the Atlantic 10 over the Pac-10, but Temple, XU and Dayton were the difference.

With UCLA and Arizona down last season, the Pac-10 took a tumble.
7. Pac-10
UCLA and Arizona were down last season and several teams underperformed in a league in transition. The Pac-10 put a measly two teams in the 2010 NCAA tournament, its fewest since 1988. And not a single team in the conference finished the season with fewer than 10 losses, which is remarkable. This year, things will be improved but not back to what the Pac-10 is used to. Washington should be the best team in the league, but are the Huskies better than a 4-seed going into the season? The Huskies, Arizona, UCLA and Washington State could wind up as the best teams, but there is not a team in the league to be afraid of.

8. Mountain West
San Diego State and BYU will be the best teams in the league (with the edge going to the Aztecs), and New Mexico and UNLV should be NCAA tournament teams as well. I expect Utah and TCU to be improved, but the Mountain West does not have the overall strength top to bottom to rise above the Pac-10 or Atlantic 10 this season.

9. Conference USA
Memphis will be in the top 20 all season with the recruiting class that Josh Pastner brought in, but beyond that, there may not be another "lock" NCAA tournament team. The league will have some bid contending teams, though. UTEP will be good under Tim Floyd with Randy Culpepper and Rashanti Harris; Southern Mississippi returns all five starters and should be upper division; and Tulsa will surprise some with how talented and scrappy the team will be. Justin Hurtt will be among the league's best players.

10. Colonial and MAC
OK, this is a cop-out to declare a tie at No. 10, but it gives props to some leagues that seldom get any ink. Butler, Gonzaga and Wichita State will likely be better than any team offered by the CAA or MAC. And you could make a case for the WAC, the West Coast Conference or the Missouri Valley, but I like the Colonial and MAC in a 10th-place tie. The CAA has three teams that can play with anyone in VCU, George Mason and Old Dominion, and the best player in the league is Hofstra's Charles Jenkins, whose team probably won't finish in the top half of the league. William & Mary should be good again after a 22-win season that included victories over Maryland, Richmond and Wake Forest.

As for the Mid-American Conference, it is one of the most balanced and competitive leagues in the country. It has been more than 20 years since there has been a repeat champion in the MAC, and that was the only repeat champ in the last 50 years. This is a league with outstanding coaches and an infusion of young talent this season that will make it even more fun to watch. If you're not convinced, ask Georgetown of the mighty Big East. Ohio, a team that finished 7-9 in league play, won the MAC tourney last season and then trounced the third-seeded Hoyas in the NCAA first round.

There's a decent (maybe 30%) chance Leslie stays 2 years. They haven't talked about the lockout in a while but it could still happen. Then who knows, maybe he'd feel that if he returned he'd have a shot at a NCAA title and immortalization

I wouldn't count out Vandy as a starter over Painter. He has a year of conditioning and non-international style basketball under his belt and he may be the defensive specialist inside we need.
