yep...9 books. "The Sookie Stackhouse Novels" aka The Southern Vampire Mysteries

and it's different than the show...an obvious one being Lafayette dies in the first book, where the series has kept him alive, and Tara is a very minor role that isn't introduced until the 3rd book. There's differences already with this season, but the overall feel and major plots between the two are the same.

Very interested to see where the TV series goes with what the book has done.
