so i scored a REALLY nice sks.

its a norinco import from the early 90s, all matching numbers, was still in the box (not shot since importation).

its a true type 56 made for the military, not made exclusively for importation.

no bayonet unfortunately, but man this thing is in good shape. im in the process of de-cosmolining it now.

(yep it was still in the cosmoline, still in the styrofoam, in its norinco box (which is rare in itself and in perfect condition).

like a time capsule. ive handled sks' before and none had machining this nice, not even russian ones.

i wish i knew what it was worth! cause i paid shit sks prices for it.

Being as popular as the DDLES lowers were, I'm surprised Sention Industries didn't expand their operations to take advantage of that market. That's too bad, I liked the look of the DDLES

I recently picked up an older 870 wingmaster for cheap. Seems to be in good shape but has a long 30" fixed full choke barrel (vent rib). I was thinking of cutting it down to ~23", similar to the length of the remington special field guns. Does anyone around raleigh have experience with doing a barrel shortening on their own? I was thinking of checking with Cap Ogburn but i'm sure that will be $$.

i shot a .500 S&W snubnose the other day...most recoil i've ever felt in a handgun...much more than a .460 S&W snub...i only squeezed off about a half dozen rounds but the palm of my hand hurt the next day

was the .460 Smith ported and the .500 not? I shot a ported .460, and it wasn't too bad, although the concussion and surge of gasses from the ports would get your attention. I'm a little surprised that a .500 is meaningfully different.

I am so disappointed. A few days ago someone on CSC was advertising an almost-new Smith and Wesson M&P 15 (5.56) with 5 magazines... for only $600. I was first to respond, but the seller seems to have sold it to someone else. Oh well. Was probably too good to be true anyway. Or maybe had been used in something illegal. LOL.

It's funny that you should bring that up. My dad, a twice-decorated combat infantryman, has recently mentioned that he misses his AR-15 he used to have back when I was a little boy. I remember having shot it once many years ago before he sold it. (He's much more into WWII long rifles, actually.) He had said that he might consider having a shop build one for him, but it just hit me that maybe this could be a project which we could do together. I have never once built a rifle from a kit before, but he's done all kinds of gunsmithing and so I don't think that a kit would be any sort of challenge for him at all. While I am under the impression that he'd want something as aesthetically close to the M-16 he carried in Vietnam, I would prefer something a bit more modern. I see a lot of talk about Palmetto State Armory, and this kit is on sale right now.

That's a pretty nice looking kit. Just add on one of the $49 blemished lowers and you're set. If you take advantage of the free shipping deal going on now you'll save at least $21 in shopping.

If you end up deciding on another PSA kit, make sure it is one of the FN-made CHFs barrel and not the PTAC stuff they sell.

I actually took the chance on a PTAC complete upper and got really lucky. It performs well. Others have not been so lucky with them. But for less than 200 bucks you can't expect too much.

I don't know about specific kits because I just piece mine together but I definitely recommend building your own. It is stupid easy, fun to do, and you learn a lot about the rifle while doing it. I am really getting the itch to do a pistol build just because I like building them so much.

OK, I need some technical guidance since I've never built a rifle before. In examining the parts, I would like to know more about the significance (if any) of some of the components listed in the kit which I linked.

- Stainless steel barrel. I see some advertised as "chrome lined." Does this make a huge difference?
- 1 in 8" twist rate. I don't know what this is. Barrel rifling?
- MI SS12G2 free-float Rail. I understand the concept of the free-floating barrel. I'm assuming that when they say rail, this is synonymous with barrel shroud?
- What are T-Marks?

Chrome lining extends the life of the barrel, but many say it hurts accuracy. Maybe a little, but may not be noticeable. Though, usually stainless barrels aren't lined.
1 in 8" is the barrel rifling twist rate. 1 in 7 or 1 in 9 are the other common options. usually bullet weight determines what twist you want.
The Midwest Industries SS 12" Gen2 rail. Yes, barrel shroud. Called a Tube or rail in the AR world. The tube is not affixed to the barrel in any way, so you won't influence the barrel by adding load to the rail sections or by preload before shooting. Helps with accuracy.
T-Marks are the numbered slots in the top rail.

Depends on the barrel. Most 1/7s will handle 55gr to 77gr+ without a problem. Some don't like 55gr or lower. Some do fine with 45gr. Most 1/9s will handle 45gr to 69gr+. Some do just fine with 77gr+. From what I've read, more 1/7s are more forgiving to lighter bullets on average than 1/9s are to heavier ones.


In short, it won't really matter unless you are looking to do precision shooting.

Sigh, it has begun. Starting my pistol build with a KAK buffer tube and Sig Arm Brace officially now that I bought the first part. Got a MOE LPK from PSA for $61.99 shipped and found a guy locally with Spikes stripped lowers for $84.99. Normally not a Spikes fan but at that price I will deal with a spider on the side of my gun.

For the rest, going to go 10.5 Noveske barrel with a pig on the end and a 12" rail of sorts that I am still undecided on. Frontrunners are Fortis REV and Rainier Evo but I am open to suggestions.

Aren't they made by the same people? The thing I like about the Rainier ones for this build is they have one that is 12" and the Samson ones I looked at are like 12.37". Small difference but I don't want to completely cover the muzzle device. Not to mention I plan on getting everything but the buffer tube and arm brace from Rainier so might as well save on shipping and whatnot.

I was just looking at one the other day. I'm planning on getting a Silencerco Sparrow and the Savage seemed like a good deal price wise vs a 22 conversion for my AR...then I thought about the $100 I'd drop on a Boyd's stock and $75 for a half decent scope

How's it shoot? What suppressor is that?

I too have a 22/45 but it's a regular bull barrel. I'm gonna have to get it threaded and the front sight retapped.

This past weekend I went to shoot the LCP some. After the 6th round, my slide flew off my grip, taking the barrel with it downrange about 10 yards. The previous owners have accumulated approximately 150 rounds, and I've shot about another 30-40 rounds myself, standard 95gr fmj. I wasn't aware that the guide rods have premature wear on them from the spring, as soon as 100 rounds... There have been a lot of report of the guide rod showing a lot of wear around this count, but I never noticed since it's not a gun I regularly shoot and with such low ammo count, I did not bother to inspect as carefully as my G27 or 24/45.

SO. To all you LCP owners out there... I thought Ruger was synonymous with quality, however, it appears their LCP's have a minor flaw. I ordered a BT Guide Rod (stronger, more durable) and a Wolfff 12lb spring kit. This should resolve my minor annoyances with the factory 9lb spring and bring my beloved .380 up to daily duty again. If you have an LCP, I'd look into this upgrade. $25 shipped for the BT Guide Rod, and $12.98 shipped for the spring kit, both bought directly from the manufacturers. Midway and Brownels were more expensive after shipping...

Or you can buy new OEM springs and guide rods for about $10 shipped from Ruger... For piece of mind, I upgraded.

Can anyone recommend a double mag carrier that is both low vis and doesn't take up much belt real estate? I've been trying out the safari land cd-auto skeleton carrier and they are the perfect size/profile but damned if it isn't impossible to draw the mag out of.

On the holster side, I highly recommend Garrett industries. Thinner kydex than most and leather lined. I've put mine through the ringer since I've had it and I love it

OK, so please humor a neophyte with some more AR-15 questions. While at the show yesterday, I saw a HUGE variation in the price of most ARs, and I don't fully understand why. (Well, no, I do somewhat.) Different internals and accessories, and different quality of certain components from specific manufacturers can make a bit of difference, but I am curious about a specific example. What makes a Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport significantly different from a Smith and Wesson M&P 15? I ask because I saw a few Sport versions - one of which was at a fairly cheap $600 - but then non-Sport versions were almost $1000 more. What am I not understanding here? I know that there's almost always a markup at shows, but one dealer table had both guns side by side, both in .223, and very little visible difference between them (to my untrained eye, anyway). The manufacturer's page lists lots of different variations on the theme, but I'm just so new at this that I don't particularly understand what I "should" be looking for.

The sport has a slick side upper, ie no forward assist or shell deflector.
It has a cheaper barrel and bolt carrier group.
Mot people would never know the difference.

The sport 'may' not stand up to as much abuse or last as long. By that, I mean 20k rounds.

There are three real questions to ask when buying an AR:

1) What do I want to use it for?
2) How much am I willing to spend?
3) Is resell value any factor?

The first question will be the biggest influence on the rest. If all you want to use it for is plinking then that means you can get by with spending much less, however, if you are concerned about resell value you might want to get something like a Colt which will hold its value much better than an M&P, DPMS, RRA, etc. If you don't care about resell, you only plan on plinking with it, then the M&P sport or a PSA rifle is what I would recommend.

If you are going to really put it through the paces and/or want it to hold up in case of self defense use then you want to spend the money on a solid brand (Colt, BCM, DD, Noveske, etc). If you want it to be dead on .5 MOA accurate then you will want to spend the money on the appropriate parts there as well.

Personally, I don't get to put my guns through the paces as much as I would like due to ammo cost, places to shoot, and just time but I like to know that they could handle whatever I threw at em. I also plan on shooting more down the line and I also like to have nice guns so I spend extra where I see the main benefit. Plus I know I can always sell it/part it out for what I paid to build them or close enough.

Last week, I bought a Gamo Big Cat 1250 pellet rifle (break-barrel) and took it out today to the big range.

Quite a fun little gun! After a little usage and firing/reloading quickly, the pellets seemed to gain more and more speed and were eventually cracking the sound barrier. The gun came with some cheater (lighter) pellets, but even the normal pellets go supersonic

$100 and came with a cheap 4x scope. I was able to hit a 6" gong from 40 yds pretty consistently

^ I definitely would go PSA over DPMS or RRA. Also, I really want to get a pellet gun someday too. Seem like they could be a lot of fun, nice and quiet, and can still be quite effective. Could make for some fun out at my parents ranch taking out small game or just some cans
