Quote : | "DURHAM, N.C. -- Mike Nifong is trying to reassure voters that he's the man for the job a day after a potential challenger said he won't pursue the district attorney job.
Friday morning Nifong admitted there's some justification to criticism about how he handled the media with the Duke case.
"Could I have done things differently? Certainly, but would it have made a difference -- I don't know," Nifong said.
Lewis Cheek, whose name will appear on the November ballot challenging Nifong but who won't actively campaign, had criticized Nifong's handling of the case in which a woman told police three Duke lacrosse players beat and raped her at a party in March. The three players charged have denied the accusations.
Nifong also said there was evidence he hoped to have in the case, such as DNA, but that it didn't pan out.
"there were things we hoped to have in terms of evidence that we ended up not having," Nifong said.
But Nifong said that he stands behind the case.
"I have not backed down from my initial assessments of this case," Nifong said.
Nifong said that no case has been ignored because of the attention to the Duke lacrosse rape case.
He also said that he hoped voters would judge him on his 28-year career, rather than just one case." |

Can't sue the DA, well, you probably can but its pointless.
Can however sue the stripper in civil court for defamation of character etc, etc. This however is pointless because she has no money to win. The only thing it would do is leave a large judgement hanging over her head forever.
Not to mention Al Sharpton would probably pay for her legal defense even though she is a lying sack of shit poor victimized mother. 7/28/2006 2:21:23 PM |

Thursday, August 3, 2006 Nifong: I might quit (the committee)
Poor Mike Nifong. His world is slowly shrinking. In an email message to Durham's Animal Control Advisory Committee, he said he is considering stepping down from the board because some of the other members signed the petition supporting Lewis Cheek. Did he read every one of those 10,000 names? Where'd he find the time? I thought he was supposed to be prosecuting the biggest case of his career. And what does he have in store for the other thousands on the petition sheets? Maybe a database to use in court.... "NO plea for you! You signed the Cheek petition!" Yikes.
DURHAM -- District Attorney Mike Nifong might step down from a county board because some of his fellow members signed a petition in support of Lewis Cheek, whose name will appear opposite Nifong's in this fall's election.
Nifong, who has been criticized for his handling of a rape case involving three members of Duke University's lacrosse team, wrote recently that he is reconsidering his role on the Animal Control Advisory Committee, an eight-member volunteer board that meets four times a year and advises the county's animal control office.
In a July 28 e-mail message to his fellow board members, Nifong wrote that he "was truly dismayed at the number of my fellow board members who signed the Lewis Cheek [petition]. 8/3/2006 7:43:06 PM |

Actually I'm thinking you might be able to get the DA - qualified immunity only goes so far, and I think there was a NC Supreme Court case that limited a prosecutor's qualified immunity. I'd have to look it up. Plus I'm sure there are probably federal civil rights charges that can be brought under Section 1983. 8/3/2006 11:20:31 PM |

8 pages reviewing the files released to the public from the case (i figure it's a little long to post the whole thing). But basically it clarifies some things and debunks some of the criticisms of the DA's case. It still casts the guilt of the lacrosse players as ambiguous.

Sheehan missed the point. The Elmo hour wasn't about justice. It was about corrupt politicians trying to intimidate an honest citizen who had the balls to tell truth. Nifong doesn't want the truth to come out about who really raped the stripper. They have the DNA evidence. It matches somebody, but that person isn't a Duke student. 9/1/2006 3:45:44 PM |

Quote : | "From May 2005 to February 2006, the period during which Gottlieb was a patrol supervisor in the district, court and police records examined by The News & Observer show that Gottlieb arrested 28 people. Twenty were Duke students, including a quarterback of the football team and the sister of a men's lacrosse player. At least 15 of the Duke students were taken to jail.
In comparison, the three other squad supervisors working in District 2 during the same 10 months -- Sgts. Dale Gunter, John Shelton and Paul Daye -- tallied a combined 64 arrests. Two were Duke students. Both were taken to jail." |
Quote : | "Gottlieb often treated Duke students and nonstudents differently. For example, Gottlieb in 2004 wrote a young man a citation for illegally carrying a concealed .45-caliber handgun and possessing less than a half-ounce of marijuana, but records indicate he wasn't taken to jail. He was not a Duke student." |

Quote : | "A barrel-chested man, Gottlieb tends to walk with his shoulders back and chin up. Among his colleagues, he is known as outspoken and sometimes headstrong. Its ironic that the black community swarms around this girl and proclaims these young mens guilt with almost no evidence and apparently hardly even any testimony from the accuser, yet with ALL the shit that went down with OJ, many still claim he is innocnent. ^ I don't think the "black community" is really swarming around her, just as much as the "white community" is swarming around the LaCrosse players. There's probably people on both sides that support who they support for racial reasons, then there's other people who weigh the evidence. 10/27/2006 5:07:44 PM |

^^^That's a pretty stupid generalization. While there is a tendency take the black person's side in a dispute with racial undertones, many blacks do look at things objectively. I know plenty of black people who think OJ is guilty. This case is no different. 10/27/2006 5:38:57 PM |

If the dancer is lying, here's why I think she did it:
This woman has had issues with the law before. She was even in a police chase at one point. Anyway, she finds herself being questioned by a security guard outside a store, and she's extremely fucked up. He calls the police, and the police start to take her to a mental health facility, which she makes up a story to avoid, a story of a rape. She's fucked up, worried about losing her child, and she says the first thing that comes to her mind that could garner her sympathy and explain her behavior so she doesn't have to go away. She never intended to identify anybody, and even in her identification, she made it clear she was confused.
From the beginning, I've objected to this notion that she was lying to get attention or money. 10/27/2006 7:39:15 PM |

So let's say that is the case Bridget. What do you think would be the proper legal course of action? I mean, should she be held accountable, or should she be given mental health help and let go?
There isn't a wrong answer here, I'm wondering your own opinion on it. 10/27/2006 7:49:09 PM |

1. I think mental health help is being held accountable in many circumstances. 2. I'd need to know more details about this situation to create an opinion on what should happen to her. 10/27/2006 7:54:26 PM |

PS: When Kobe Bryant was accused of rape, which I said was total bullshit from the beginning, did the Lakers cancel the season? Where do the lacrosse players go to get last season back? Where does the winning lacrosse coach who was fired go to get his Duke job back? Where do the falsely accused young men go to get their reputations back?
