BTW our defensive lineup for tomorrow night looks pretty nice (on paper at least). Everyone will finally be in there for the first time all season.

Quote : | "A Hurricane warning
As I look at the Eastern Conference standings, I'm starting to wonder if the Hurricanes are going to qualify for a chance to defend their Cup championship. On Saturday night, Carolina dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the woeful Bruins in Raleigh. The Hurricanes are now 0-3-1 in their last four games and just 5-7-3 in their last 15. The Canes haven't scored a significant win since stopping the Ducks, 4-2, on Dec. 29.
That's not so good.
Carolina's recent woes put it in a dangerous situation. Through Sunday's action, the Canes are eighth in the East, a single point ahead of the surging Maple Leafs and two points over the Islanders. Both the Leafs and Isles have played two fewer games than the Hurricanes. The Rangers, who are five points behind the Canes, have three games in hand on the Cup champs.
The bottom line is very simple: if the Hurricanes don't get their act together, they're going to be watching the playoffs from a Raleigh sports bar.
GM Jim Rutherford clearly understands his situation. That's why he has been working the phones in search of deal that will revive his struggling team. According to several reports, Rutherford is among the dozen or so clubs in the Peter Forsberg sweepstakes. Perhaps if he still had top defensive prospect Jack Johnson (traded to Los Angeles in October), he'd be able to swing a deal for Forsberg. Now, I'm not saying a Johnson-for-Forsberg swap would be wise, either; but Rutherford would have a big chip for any such deal if he'd held on to Johnson. Right now, he doesn't have too many high-end prospects to use.
The Hurricanes have nine games until the Feb. 27 trade deadline. If Rutherford can't make a deal, his core players (Rod Brind'Amour, Eric Staal, Erik Cole, Cam Ward) will have to push forward. The recent return of veteran defenseman Bret Hedican should help. He missed 12 games due to a finger injury. Carolina continues to wait on D-man Frantisek Kaberle, who has been out since undergoing preseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder. He was cleared for contact on Jan. 15, but he doesn't feel ready for a return. If things go well, the Canes hope their offensive-minded defender will be back in the lineup within the next few weeks.
Up front, Carolina would love to get a push from star center Staal, who hasn't been quite as productive this season, posting 23 goals and 47 points (minus-9) in 55 games. Last season, Staal piled up 45 goals and 100 points. He'll finish well below those numbers in 2006-07.
In such a competitive league, teams need an edge. Last season, the Hurricanes seemed to have it. This season, after reaching hockey's promised land, they don't. It's hard to explain what's missing, but you can just sense something isn't quite right. Tampa forwards Martin St. Louis and Brad Richards both expressed a similar feeling about their team last season. At the time, they believed they were working just as hard as they did during their 2004 Cup run. In retrospect, though, they believed they found themselves waiting for something good to happen, waiting for the same success to come to them without the same effort.
That might be happening in Carolina. The Hurricanes have 27 games remaining on the schedule. That's enough time to get back on track. Will they? For most of the season, I figured they would. Now, I'm starting to have my doubts." |

The Wright brothers plane, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, USS North Carolina battleship and ocean waves adorn the mostly-red mask. Cam's wife's initials, "CWC," are hidden on a wing of the Wright brothers plane, and his grandfather, Frank, is honored on the back of the mask. The back also features the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes secondary logo over it and the words "HAVE FUN," which Cam often writes on his goalie sticks." |

and seriously awesome win last nite. beating the canadaiens is a good win, and kaberle's goal is a good sign too.
hopefully with 20+ games left we can make up those 6 points to ATL or atleast get a #4 spot in the playoffs.

oh i know... but it doesnt seem like the organization tolerates that kind of stuff at all. i dont know the full scope of everything, but the way it looks... it seems like babs might get dealt, and i think he would be a big bargaining chip 2/7/2007 4:13:04 PM |

God dammit
I LOVE Babchuk and think trading him away would be a horrible move for the future of the organization, but he may have just put himself on the block with this move.
EDIT:
Quote : | "Jay Grossman, Anton Babchuk's agent, said his client doesn't feel he's a minor-league player and would prefer the Hurricanes trade him to another NHL team.
“After playing well and for a good part of the season, especially at the beginning, in the top four, playing more than 20 minutes a night, he doesn’t feel he’s a minor-league player,” Grossman said. “I know there’s interest out there and teams that view it the same way. At the same time, we understand the prediciment Jim faces. We’ve been communicating regarding that and we’ll see what happens.”" |
If they get a good offer for him I guess he will probably be gone, but I doubt JR will trade him for nothing. While I know he hates to have players with a "selfish" attitude, I think trading him now for less than his value would be giving the message that he will bend to the will of the players
