Quote : | "The ACC championship game better be a good one, because there are going to be a lot of people watching.
The Dec. 5 Dr Pepper Football Championship Game will return to prime-time national television this year, with an 8 p.m. (ET) kickoff on ESPN, the ACC announced Wednesday.
This is good exposure for the conference, but an empty Raymond James Stadium in Tampa (again) would further the criticism of the ACC's title game. The best business model for the ACC in 2009 would obviously be a Florida State/Miami matchup, and that's certainly a possibility. But so is NC State/Georgia Tech. Virginia Tech/Florida State. Wake Forest/North Carolina (don't laugh, I'm serious). The possibilities are endless.
The prime-time kickoff is the first for the ACC championship since the inaugural game in Jacksonville in 2005. It has been played at 1 p.m. in each of the past three seasons. The first four ACC title games were televised on ABC.
The ACC was involved in two of ESPN's highest-rated college football games of 2008. The Miami at Florida (5.0) regular-season contest was the network's highest-rated regular-season game, while the Champs Sports Bowl (5.2 rating), which featured Florida State and Wisconsin, was the national sports network's highest-rated bowl game of the 2008 season.
Florida State and Miami tend to draw the viewers, and they'd draw the crowd, too. It's the teams getting there that seems to be the problem lately. " |

Quote : | "Q: The most underrated team will be ... ?
A: North Carolina State. Yes, I’m an unabashed disciple in the church of Tom O’Brien, but I believe in the guy’s ability to build a winner. I saw it in action at Boston College, and I believe we’re seeing it again in Raleigh. Yeah, the guy’s a rotary phone in an iPhone world, but his conservative blueprint for success still works. And now, he’s got a quarterback to carry his program to another level.
The key is Russell Wilson, the precocious second-year dual-threat, who ignited the program in 2008 and finished as a most unlikely All-ACC first team quarterback. If he can stay healthy, a big concern, he’s got that certain quality that just spawns good things. It was evident throughout the second half of the season, when the Wolfpack kept getting better as the year progressed and won four straight as an underdog.
With a little bit of wind at its back and O’Brien settling into his third season on campus, NC State is about to roll from a 6-7 program to a Top 25 team. If it can handle South Carolina on opening night, look out. The Pack is liable to get hot and finish with nine or ten wins and an Atlantic Division crown. " |

I'm absolutely thrilled to see some respect coming our way from the media with regard to our football program. Almost every article i read these days about our team puts a huge grin on my face.
That being said, I can't help but feel sometimes that some real NC State shit is going to go down and we'll drop to the bottom of the totem pole again. I guess these thoughts are just the scars on our feet from where we've shot ourselves so many times in the past. I'm sure Tom has been working on mentally strengthening the team, it appeared that at times that was our biggest obstacle.
I have all the respect in the world for O'brien and company for what promise they show and how much they've matured as players and people. If the last 5 games of the season gave us any hint, i think come this fall we're going to see a real, living, emotionally driven team that'll make plays that leave us fans with our jaws dropped.

I think every fan of NC State is cautiously optimistic about this season. I remember thinking that no one could stop us prior Rivers' senior year. They didn't. Unfortunately, our defense couldn't stop anybody either, and we were an underacheiving team -- we had some moments, but we should have contended for the league title with that offense.
The thing that has me excited about this season is that TOB teams seem incapable of underacheiving. Too disciplined, too mentally-tough. I'm sure we'll have some shit moments, but this team is seems poised to make some real noise. 6/19/2009 2:30:41 PM |

The thing that has me excited is that I feel like we actually have some depth. So if we have the third epic injury season in a row, we should still be able to win games. 6/19/2009 3:32:42 PM |

^ Yeah I hear that. It was good to hear TOB say (and I forget where/when he did) that the staff did an in-depth review the laundry list of injuries over the last two seasons. They didn't find any systemic, program-wide issues that caused the "outbreak." 6/19/2009 5:20:59 PM |

The secondary is still such a huge question mark. Not exactly a lot of quality proven depth.
I still get flashbacks of those Reggie Ball garbage throws that Calvin Johnson would pull down because our secondary of yore was subpar.
Still, it's going to be fun to watch our offense this year. 6/19/2009 5:42:56 PM |

21:00 min long, good stuff IMO. Particularly where they address the hype around UNC in the upcoming season. Wasn't really all that harsh if you ask me. They just asked the same Q's I would. Namely, how exactly are tarholes going to score points? Then there's VT - who could have the same problem. I'll believe the hype around the Hokies when I see it, b/c in my eyes they still don't have a proven commodity at QB.
Oh, and both agree that State is one of the surest bets in the ACC to have success. That and G-Tech, and I have to agree there too. Both Tech and State finished strong, both didn't lose too many key players, and both should be deeper and more experienced.
Damnit, someone please figure out how to get the universe to fast forward 2.5 freakin' months... 6/20/2009 12:39:42 AM |

Southern Pigskin ranks Carter-Finley as the 4th toughest place to play in the ACC (behind Clemson, Virginia Tech and FSU):
Quote : | "4. NC State - Recently refurbished Carter-Finely Stadium is now one of the largest stadiums in the ACC. Wolfpack fans are loud, proud and form a sea of red on home Saturday's in the fall. NC State is home to some of the best tailgaiting in the league and the party carries over into the stands. I wouldn't say that, I don't really agree with UNC at #5 but the ACC isn't exactly known for great stadiums/crowds (at least beyond us, FSU, Clemson and Va Tech)...Miami now plays in a pro stadium it will NEVER fill up, BC has all of like 1,000 fans, Duke's stadium is arguably shittier than my HS' stadium, UVA and GT don't have impressive crowds/stadiums by any stretch, and WFU's stadium only holds like 15 people.6/21/2009 9:45:22 PM |
