It looked pretty fucking sweet on Brewmasters

I picked up a six pack of this the other day:

Calling it a tripel is a stretch as it's way too sweet and hoppy, but it's pretty tasty regardless of style.

Went down to Sam's Quik Stop at about 7:30 PM today and the guy said they'd sold the last bottle of Bitches' Brew a couple of hours before. Bastards.

So I picked up a 4-pack of the Terrapin Wake-N-Bake Oatmeal Coffee Imperial Stout and a 750ml of
.

Going to try one of the terrapins as soon as it's cold enough, but the Noel will probably wait a bit. Looking forward to it though.

Was $9.49. Your $20 sounds a bit steep in comparison.

It's all about supply and demand.

I've already sold all but 2 for $20 each.

Top bid on Ebay is $26 right now.

^^depends, if you're a beer connoisseur and want to try different rare beers and have the money to pay for something you can't get your hands on, i don't see an issue with it. doesn't matter how good the beer is if it's limited edition it's going to command a price... heck i couldn't be more excited if people get inspired by watching brewmasters and buy more craft beer.

but 51 dollars for a beer that supposedly was only going to be a 1-time release, but then was brewed again to meet the "demands" based on the new tv show, and will probably become part of their ever growing limited yearly lineup is a bit rediculous. maybe i just say this because i've already had it plenty of times and have 1 bottle in the fridge at the lady's place and another in my closet. All that i got for under $10/btl.

Definitely; if it's good for the craft beer industry, then I'm all for it. I'm just not ready to drop $20+ on a bottle, even as interesting as it sounds. Mainly because I'm po'.

Speaking of Dogfish Head, has anyone tried their Sah'tea? I almost picked up a bottle at Sam's--looked quite interesting. (Brewed with Rye, Juniper Berries, and a number of other interesting items) It's a midsummer release but they had a few bottles left, might have to pick one up if there are still any next time I'm in.

^^well if you like it that much than you shouldn't have a problem with them making more... and just because you can get it for $10/bottle doesn't mean everyone can. don't hate on people that have the money to get beer they want to taste, good or bad.

$40-$50 per bottle for beers that are only brewed once or twice a year in limited quantities is about the going rate (resold, not retail). bitches brew is not the only beer to be sold that high. just look at Deschutes Dissident that takes 2 years to make, it's about $50 as well (on ebay, if you can't find it retail)

i mean with craft beer's popularity shooting through the roof, i have a VERY hard time here trying to get these rare beers, most stores only get 1 case and that case only lasts for about 2 hours.

The problem is that there is a cottage industry of people buying up all the stock of limited release beers with no intention of drinking or sharing them, just reselling them at a hefty markup. This ends up making it that much harder/more expensive for people who actually want to try the beer to get it. It becomes a downward spiral of excessive hype and inflated prices that ruins two of the best things about the craft beer movement: accessibility and affordability.

that i agree with...partially. i think you're over-exaggerating the eBay thing, there's only like 5 sellers selling bitches brew. i'm pretty sure most people are buying it to drink it. 1 case per store is not what i call accessibility, it's a limited edition brew.

It's less of an issue with beers that are widely distributed (like DFH products) as opposed to stuff that is released at the brewery for one day only...and then you see 30 bottles of that beer on Ebay the next day at quadruple the retail price.

yea, but seriously that's the brewery's fault, not the consumer. i mean what are you gonna do drive to Indiana for that one day and camp out so you can buy at retail price? the triple/quadruple price is for the convenience of not having to fight for a bottle. it's not like you have 5 people selling 30 bottles, typically the brewery only allows 1 bottle per customer in those situations anyways. it sucks, but with rare beers that's pretty much what you have to do if you want to try it. not the argument on whether it's WORTH the money is a different story, but like i said before, taste is subjective and some people just want to taste it, whether it's good or bad beer.

that's expensive!

I got a place here in Denver that's called FreshCraft if you're ever in town, the last event was 3 course, 8 beer dinner for $25/person with Left Hand & Ska Brewing:

well, it's a jose garces place. it's a pretty expensive place, not a brew pub or anything, but a fine dining establisment. the standard menu 4 course tasting meal is like $55 or so i think.

a good friend of mine just moved back to denver.

need to get up there and kick around this spring i think.

Most of the one day only beer releases I've read about allow you to buy between 6 bottles and a case per person, and there are a bunch of stories of people getting their family to stand in line with them so they can get several cases (purchasing the maximum allotment for each person in their group) which they immediately put up on Ebay at an exorbitant markup. It's just lame people are turning it into a tickle me elmo holiday shopping shitfest to make a few dollars. And there is a perfectly good alternative, which is that you could trade for a bottle of whatever super rare beer you seek with someone who lives near the brewery.

well it's the balance of economics, low supply & high demand equals high prices. most beers i see are BID on up to those high prices, the price is not just arbitrarily set. second, most people on eBay looking for beers are people that don't live near the brewery so they didn't have a chance to get their beer anyhow. the likelyhood of trying to find someone to trade with you is slim. i hate scalpers as much as the next person, but this is just a case of unique, limited-edition, type of goods. sure some scalpers exist and ebay the beer to make money, but if they didn't eBay the beer, there really wouldn't be another alternative to get the beer yourself unless you drove to the brewery yourself.

Well, missed out on the bitch's brew by a few hours, but picked up a 4 pack of Terrapin WnB, which is delicious. I've really been enjoying just about anything from Terrapin and Bells lately.

Also picked up Weyerbacher's Winter Ale, but it was just so-so.

I really like the Carolina Brewing Company tour - unlimited samples and good beer, been going for years - the only detractor being the drive to Holly Springs

Big Boss was alright, but samples were limited

haven't been to any others in the Raleigh area

went to Sam's Quik Shop today for the first time. Picked up the last 750 of Delirium Noel, liked it last year but it just looks enticing again. Also grabbed a St. Bernardus Christmas ale... I guess im just in the mood for these things now.

^both excellent, i pretty much buy all the Christmas ales as they vary from year to year, I like trying new stuff.

Brewed an amber on Sunday, so naturally I did a lot of amber tasting this weekend, had Odell's Levity, Alaskan Amber, and Widmer's Drop Top, all excellent beers, I'd rank Alaskan best, then Widmer's, then Odell's.

Also picked up a bottle of DFH World Wide Stout. Debating on whether to drink it or cellar it for a year. Opinions?

Opened up the Delirium Noel while setting up the Christmas tree, appropriately. Quite good, will drink again (but probably next year). And the Terrapin WnB Oatmeal Coffee is just outstanding--the coffee flavor is quite strong, but not overpowering, and it nestles in quite nicely with the flavor of the imperial stout itself. Damn tasty.

Tried a Gouden Carolus Noel last night to continue my holiday beer "tour"

... wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be. almost overly sweet, heavy caramel and malt flavors and an over powering Alcohol burn. I let it warm up a tad, but nothing really changed.

I saw the SA Infinium at Total Wine today, but it was too rich for my blood at the moment, I might try to pick up a bottle for New Years Eve. I did snag a six pack of Left Hand Fade to Black Vol. 2 which is a smoked baltic porter:

Nothing special, but I picked up a 6-pack of Sweetwater Festive Ale for dinner tonight (sharing of course). Had some over Thanksgiving and highly enjoyed it. Also had Dogfish Head and Southern Tier Pumpkin Ales. The Southern Tier was a tad sweet for my liking and the Dogfish Head had a few too many hops for what I would want in a pumpkin beer. Kept me gravitating back towards the Festive Ale for the remainder of the evening.

what i picked up today:

also met a buddy downtown and went to Great Divide, went with the Hibernation on tap, the last couple sips are definitely the best, not sure I could drink another though... good but strong.

headed to Raleigh for a friends graduation next weekend... might pick up some Bell's & Founder's while I'm there, maybe some Duck Rabbit as well, any local recommendations?
