The last bit gave me a chuckle. Penny Arcade thoughts on iPad
http://www.penny-arcade.com
Quote : | "As for everything else, you already know it. It's a large, heavy iPhone that can't make calls. Everything the iPhone excels at, this excels at also, and that includes the acquisition of human grease and filth. Every extended interaction with the device leaves it coated with smears of unknown provenance, like a stripper pole. From a narrative perspective, they've gone the wrong way: they've made a large, less general purpose device after a smaller, perfect one. You come out with the big one first, and then when you make the one that fits in your pocket, there is a gasp from everyone in the room. You may sense this also, upon using it: the sense that time has begun to flow backward." |

What was TIME Magazine thinking with their iPad app? It is just destined to fail. Each issue is $4.99 and you have to download a separate app for it.
So many things wrong with that...first being that if they do want to charge per issue, have they not heard of 'in app purchase' yet?
2nd who's going to pay $4.99 for 1 issue of TIME? lol 4/5/2010 4:04:23 PM |

The reason it has gotten so many glowing reviews is that the reviewers are hoping this thing will revive their industry.
It won't.
It was interesting when I saw some paper (either NYT or WSJ) planned on selling monthly subscriptions for the iPad at close to $20 a month. They must be joking. People dont need to pay for news anymore. 4/5/2010 4:09:20 PM |

It hasn't gotten any glowing reviews in the App Store Everyone is pissed because they didn't realize they were paying more for 1 digital issue than they would for printed issue.
Also, it's the WSJ. The App is free but access to their premium content will cost you $17.99 / month. Quite ridiculous.4/5/2010 4:16:42 PM |
Noen All American 31346 Posts user info edit post |
^still cheaper than the actual WSJ. Which people DO pay for, because it's extremely valuable content.
Guys, this "content should be free" bullshit is dying, finally. Apple is proving that people WILL pay for content if it's in an easily consumable, polished form. And as a result, the *big* content publishers are getting ballsy and asking for too much.
It'll settle out, just like the app store did with the iPhone. The publishers will drop their prices or offer specials and people will continue to go about their business. 4/5/2010 5:07:00 PM |

I am in no way against paying for content. I am the last person to voice an opinion AGAINST the pay for content model. But $4.99 for 1 magazine issue with a piss poor purchasing model is just retarded no matter how you look at it.4/5/2010 5:21:43 PM |

I really really do not understand the hype about the iPad. Congrats and cool if you have one but people act like its going to spark some big paradigm shift or is some major break throw in technology.
One article i read discussed people waiting overnight to stand in line to grab one. Is it that fucking of a big deal to wait a week or two for inventories to recover. I must commend Apple's marketing department for making a un-extraordinary product turn into the next techno fad. I do not even remember the iPhone getting such hype and it arguably could be seen as major deal. 4/5/2010 11:51:16 PM |

No matter how awesome or terrible the ipad is, why anyone would wait overnight in line for one baffles me. With the exception of the countless people Ive read about or follow on Twitter that flew in from abroad to buy it. If you are that set on buying one why wouldn't you pre-order it march 12th and wait in the comfort of your own home for it?

I think there is some truth to the hype in regards of setting the playing field for such devices. Regardless of your opinion of Apple, iPhone OS, or apples Eco system it is a game changer and a solid concept. I am eager to see what other companies start producing with their own hardware/software and those that are already in the works.
I was interested in the JooJoo until I read a hands on review, that thing couldn't fail more if they tried.
Hopefully HP, MS and Asus(I think) will stand up to their full potential.4/6/2010 12:06:28 AM |

I wasn't sure either so i just checked and it does. Are you sure you were looking at a location that has street view? I just dropped a pin over my office building and it worked. Works the same way as iPhone with the transition.4/6/2010 12:09:35 AM |

Yeah, I put the pin in like 4-5 different places in downtown greensboro. I just checked on my laptop and those areas show up just fine in street view.

yeah apple isn't like nintendo or microsoft. they produce a shit ton of their items before launch day so you don't have to wait because of shortages. everyone acted like it would be hard to get an iphone too when they first came out but i just walked in and bought one and walked out on launch day back in 2007--they had plenty. 4/6/2010 8:17:24 AM |

You hit the nail on the head here. Apple has been the only company to remove the inherent complexity in consuming content. For tech geeks like us, the complexity is part of the fun. However, we as a group are not profitable. It's when people non-techies can easily consume said content that it really becomes scalable, marketable, and profitable.
We still have a long way to go. Content and platforms need to be independent of each other and interoperate seamlessly. I think the evolution is in progress. These days your TV, receiver, Blu-ray player all have network interfaces as well as your typical data devices such as PCs, laptops, and phones. At some point in the not to distant future you'll no longer have shelves of DVDs/Blu Rays, CDs, and other tangible media. It'll all be instantly accessible from multiple devices via the cloud.
The biggest challenge is the licensing and distribution model. The technical challenge in making this work is pretty much negligible. The real challenge is getting the content owners (RIAA, MPAA, etc.) to stop living in the 1970's and embrace such a model. Apple is currently proving that this is a viable model. Hopefully the rest of the moronic old suits in the film and music industry wake up and realize it.4/6/2010 11:49:44 AM |

^^ ipad? you don't need any sort of plan with one i don't think (wifi, you just need a connection, free or paid depending) the 3g version (for 3g internet and such) will probably need a data plan from a cell provider (att&t only still?) but it also (i'm pretty sure) has wifi, so you don't need to get service...
i think there is a cable that adapts the port on it to a usb port (i dunno if you can access files via it or not or use it as a wireless modem or not yet)

$30/month with 3G from AT&T I think 4/6/2010 11:59:37 AM |

^$15 for 250 megs/month and $30 for unlimited per month. The nice thing is there's no contract so you can pick and choose each month, and you can activate it right on the iPad via the settings. So if you're on a trip and decide to use the data you can turn it on just for that month. 4/6/2010 12:02:49 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
^pretty much. Its very similar in concept to AT&T hot spots where you can buy a 24 hour 'pass' but instead you are buying either pre-paid data and refill when its consumed (no overage charges) or you buy a 30 day unlimited plan. Its all done from your iPad settings. Its supposed to be no more complicated than buying a song or movie from iTunes on the iPhone/iPad. 4/6/2010 12:25:11 PM |

I think the Notion Ink Adam will be the next big slate, it has all the features the iPad has and more at about ~80% of the cost, Android Market, 3G, GPS, reversible camera, better battery life, 1080p out w/ HDMI, Flash support, Multitasking, SD expansion card slot, etc. I know Apple makes great products, but I still think the iPad would do better at a lower price point, it's really not that great of a value. Then again, people don't really seem to care about price when it comes to Apple products.

That's a nightmare for a touchscreen device. It looks gorgeous, and I can see it being pretty usable on a monitor +mouse setup, but it fails big time for direct touch.
I'm learning more and more how fucking difficult it is to create a GOOD direct touch interface. For something being tagged ass "NUI" (Natural User Interface), it's really anything but. I'm constantly surprised how nearly every UI convention used today falls down flat when you put it in a direct touch environment. 4/6/2010 1:27:44 PM |

One inaccuracy in the comparison list.
It says this and the JooJoo do HD video but the iPad doesn't although the iPad DOES do HD video and you can sync your HD video from iTunes as well and will actually display HD unlike the JooJoo.
I'm not sure if Engadget wrote that or if the company making it did because if its engadget they need to make up their minds. In another article they write...
