Almonds, peanut butter, and cheese are good snacks that can pile on the calories if you're hurting for them (don't eat all at the same time though). I like to do some almonds and two things of string cheese 6/13/2010 5:34:13 PM |

dinner tonight was pork tenderloin and corn on the cobb
tomorrow's meals will be: breakfast: 2 scrambled eggs with nonfat organic milk and 1 slice of nonfat cheese snack: banana lunch: turkey sandwich with gluten free bread and tomatoes, onions, green peppers, avacado spread (i make it myself with mashed avacados, some extra virgin olive oil, and salt) and some mustard snack: 2% greek yogurt
i went to the lake today around 3ish and started running but about a mile in, it was so hot that i walked the rest of the way. thank god i did because i was so light headed when i got home i had to sit for a good 30 minutes before i was ok. 6/13/2010 6:37:39 PM |

khcadwal you have to force yourself to eat better and eat more. Even if you are not hungry, eating a 200-300 calorie snack twice a day, coupled with 3 decent meals, and and at least 45 minutes of some kind of exercise that gets your heart rate into the calorie burning zone is the only way you're going to make any progress. You have "taught" your body that it can slow its metabolism down and live on an unhealthy level of calories. This is the same thing that happens to POW's, of course to a lesser extent. So when your body does get those calories, what is it going to do???? That's right, turn them into long term energy (fat) and store them.
I know it seems counter intuitive that eating more will help with weight loss, but the fact is, everyone's metabolism is just a big multi-variable, complex equation. Some of those variables are calorie intake, exercise level, stress level, heredity, etc. And obviously there is some "perfect" coefficient to put in front of each variable... only you can find out what those coefficients are, but I can absolutely guarantee that for a healthy woman your age that exercises on a daily basis, it is somewhere between 1500-3000 calories. Anything less, your body will simply revert to starvation mode and regardless of how much you exercise, or how low stress your life is, or what your genetics are like.... you will never achieve your goals. 6/13/2010 6:45:52 PM |

i would think a pound a week is pretty good. and if you're doing it the right way, then taking it off slowly will have a better long term impact on your overall health. you'd be less likely to gain the weight back because you're losing the fat and gaining muscle.

From what I've been told, 1-2lbs. per week is healthy. It's a calorie deficit of 1,000/day over a week, which can be gained pretty easily through exercise and eating smart. 6/14/2010 8:47:33 AM |

I think 1 percent of your body weight is considered the maximum you can safely lose per week.
I've taken a few days off from working out because of travel and feeling like I am fighting a cold. The scale jumped down a bit, despite eating more than usual over the weekend, which was a surprise. I normally lose in little chunks though, nothing for a week or two then down two or three pounds overnight. I've felt better/slimmer over the last week and had my clothes fitting better. I'll post pics later.
Being around my family over the weekend was sort of interesting. Aaron and I both eat a lot more legit food than my parents (who are obese), and when we'd get hungry 3 hours after our last mini-meal they'd be surprised we were eating again. 6/14/2010 9:39:18 AM |

I think a lot of people who struggle with their weight or who don't have the healthiest eating habits get a little shocked when they see how frequently some smaller people eat.
I saw a very interesting tv program a couple of years ago about two women who were best friends. One was super skinny and the other was a bit chunky. The chunky one claimed her friend ate all the freaking time while staying slim. She said that it was a metabolism problem that made the two of them look different.
So doctors monitored both women ... metabolic rate, calorie intake throughout the day, overall weight gain, etc. As it turns out, the one who ate more frequently actually ate fewer calories. But the chunkier friend would skip meals and then binge later, eating way too many calories. 6/14/2010 9:45:07 AM |

The Truth About Food! I loved that show.
And yeah, the same was true with us, I think. We ate a lot of meals, but then we wouldn't sit down and eat half a bag of chips or 10 cookies without even realizing we were doing it. That's their biggest problem. 6/14/2010 9:47:30 AM |

My parents are similar ... they always claim they eat healthy foods, but when I go to their house, it's filled to the brim with snacks that I'd never want in my house ... Oreos, chips, ice cream. My mom will buy them because they're such a deal. But the long-term cost of eating that stuff is definitely not worth the BOGO savings. 6/14/2010 9:52:44 AM |

That's the problem with most people.
I would imagine most would say, if asked, that they "eat mostly healthy and exercise."
But when you analyze their weekly meals, it's full of snacking, binging, alcohol, and preserved foods.
And their exercising? 10 minutes on the treadmill at 2.0 mph with a Redbook.
And this is why most people complain about not seeing any changes, and why the health industry has so many "magical silver bullets" that rake in billions of dollars a year.
For most people, it's really as simple as diet and exercise, you just really have to do it. 6/14/2010 9:59:01 AM |

my sister keeps cheating on her diet that I've mapped out. She simply refuses to eat certain foods, vegetables primarily, and keeps eating processed crap. She can lie to me about her diet all she wants, but she's lying to herself and that is the killer. I found a half-eaten box of fruity pebbles in our laundry room. She's doing pretty well by staying at a deficit, but I think she's eating too little and sleeping/sitting on the couch watching fucking women TV shows too much. I have to go to our gym and hop on an elliptical if I want to watch TV.
She's talked about wanting to join WW and all that jazz and agreed to give my diet plan a go. I've been very lenient on the recommended foods and do let her indulge in her vices. She's really lacking on protein. She says she doesn't relate eating a protein source with her breakfast, so she just doesn't eat it. Then goes hours without eating again. She gained .4lbs in the past week after I let up slack on her diet...she lost 5lbs in the first week when I was super strict....does she not trust me or something? I don't want her to fail as I feel I'll be the failure. Convenience is not an issue or an excuse for her to eat junk, she just keeps making poor choices and refusing to try new foods. I feel there is no weight watchers program or someone else's diet plan that will be more accommodating to her demands. Everyone else is going to recommend she eat eggs, oatmeal, and vegetables...which she won't. I guess she's not ready to take this seriously enough, yet complains about her body image constantly. I think she feels its easier to starve herself than eat quality foods and exercise. If she does that, I think she'll end up with the same body image, just at a 75% resize. /rant 6/14/2010 10:42:22 AM |

The only reason people get on weight watchers is because they're lazy, which is usually the reason they're fat in the first place. 6/14/2010 10:48:19 AM |

porcha i dont think joining WW is really going to help your sister because as long as she's within her "point range" that has made WW famous, it doesn't mean crap - she is still not going to be eating the veggies and the things she needs.
instead of going overboard with the veggies and the new foods, have her try one or 2 new things a week. make her incorporate that thing into her diet a few times so she can get used to the taste, texture, smell, etc. plus, then she can try it different ways and find out the way she likes it prepared best. that's what i had to do when i was in my late teens/early 20s and started getting adventurous with trying different veggies and foods.

I talked about this issue a bunch over the last week. Everyone (world's fattest woman-type people aside) wants to be in shape and healthy. They all say they want to eat well and exercise. But some people just don't have the willpower it takes to actually do that, because breaking old habits is hard, and crap food tastes good. They'll say they really want to change, and they'll mean it for a few days, but until something clicks inside of them to make them willing to buckle down and do whatever it takes for however long it takes, they won't. And you can't beat yourself up because she isn't there yet. She may well never get there.
Don't get mad at her or take it too personally. Be an example, try to show her how good you look and feel and let her know that you are there as a resource to help her however she needs. But you can't MAKE her change. (I fight with this a LOT with my family. It's really hard.)
I like this article: http://www.stumptuous.com/honesty-is-the-best-policy
On a side note, I have noticed in the last year or so, since I really cleaned up my eating most of the time, restaurant food just doesn't taste very good. Not only fast food, but even some nicer types of places. I guess the restaurant combo of fat and salt just doesn't work for me anymore. It's good in a way, because then I really enjoy the healthy foods I make at home so much more than unhealthier stuff, but it's also kind of a pain sometimes. I like going out once in a while to places that aren't super $$, and I want to enjoy it when I do. But I don't really anymore. Anyone else had that happen? 6/14/2010 10:55:00 AM |

Skwinkle, I really like that article! Here's an important excerpt:
Quote : | "Here are strategies. The purpose here is knowing, not policing. Before you can know whether you are on the right track, you have to get an accurate picture of where you actually are.
1. The scale is an OK tool of measurement for some things but not others. I’d still use it but I’d start using tape measurements. See #2. Personally I believe in daily weighing, because body weight fluctuates from day to day with hydration levels. If you eat something a bit salty the night before, or you’re at a certain point in your menstrual cycle (many women retain water at ovulation and just before their periods), you can see up to a 5-pound jump in the scale weight. The next day, or within the next few days, it’ll be gone. Thus, for accuracy, it’s better to weigh daily at the same time and in the same way (usually first thing in the morning after you’ve gone to the bathroom), and take the weekly average. 2. Take tape measurements of the circumference of your neck, chest, waist, hips, thighs, calves, upper and lower arms to track any changes in body composition. You use multiple circumference sites because changes can occur at some places and not others. The more data points, the more accuracy you have. Don’t pull the tape so tight it can double as a tourniquet, or let it sag so you can add pretend inches to your mighty biceps. The only person you’re lying to is yourself. 3. Write down everything you eat and drink, and measure portion sizes. Use measuring cups. Seriously. I was shocked the first time I actually measured things. Remember: until you learn exactly what four ounces or one cup looks like, EYEBALLING DOES NOT WORK. 4. Write down all activity: duration, intensity, type.
Do #3 and #4 for one to two weeks. Don’t worry about assessment. Just record, and be anal retentive about it. Be honest. Don’t be either overly self-critical or overly lenient. Step back a little bit and observe yourself without judgement, but also without indulgence. If you’re obsessive, make it work for you. Why should OCD get a free ride?! This is not obsession towards self destruction. It is obsession towards self knowledge. You are handing over the power of assessment to neutral techniques who do not judge. They record only. They do not care. They only know numbers. They don’t know morals, success, or failure." |

ha ha, that article is golden, especially this part:
Quote : | "I’ve had emaciated women insist they were too big, or show me imaginary giant biceps. I’ve had very overfat women insist that their thigh size was due entirely to freakishly muscular quadriceps even though the skinfold caliper demonstrated a fat measurement of 50 mm. I’ve had people insist they were eating a perfect diet until we went through day by day, meal by meal and discovered forgotten Starbucks frappucinos, glasses of wine, 3 pm handfuls of jellybeans, inappropriate portion sizes, and a host of other mystery ingredients. “Exercising regularly” suddenly becomes “well, I did skip Thursday, and I guess I was booked that other evening so I didn’t go, and then there was that Doctor Who marathon on TV over the weekend that I couldn’t miss…” Either that or “busting ass in the gym” really means “a single tiny drop of sweat wiggled its gentle way down my temple”." |

I did not eat well this weekend (my mom threw us an engagement party and well, YES I ATE ALL THE GOOD STUFF)
I'm hoping it didn't alter my inches but I felt the carb/sweets overload last night and today.. I feel like shit...
After reading that link (well, only part of it but I'm going to finish it tonight), I'm going to be honest with myself. I haven't followed the meal plan my doctor gave me.............. over 2 years ago. I let myself slide in quite a bit of areas. I stick to a lot of it, but I could do much better. *le sigh*
OH. But I will say one thing. At the party, I had quite a few people tell me I looked much thinner and very healthy my grandma was like "I see that yoga is working well for you" (she thinks yoga cures everything.. I told her it was more like I run and bike and weighlift ) But the point is, it encouraged me to do better.
And just a little rant: I had someone tell me that I better enjoy being thinner now because when I get married I'll "blow up and pack on the pounds." Do people assume you automatically eat like shit and become lazy when you get married? What the F?
EDIT: and since I'm being honest with yall this morning, I will admit - I had a blueberry muffin from Cup-a-Joe this morning >.< I"m pretty pissed at myself

I've always thought when watching TBC that it would be so easy to play that just like a boxer or wrestler. Just do 2 hours of running in a sweatsuit the day of weigh in, and don't rehydrate until afterwards. You'll end up showing a 5-8 lb. difference (if you don't pass out). Alrighty. Well with my activity level, I'm working on getting back into the same shape I was in high school. I was running around 5 miles a day. Right now I'm running probably .25 miles and walking .75 miles. It's been 5 years since I graduated, and aside from the little bit of soccer I played freshmen year in intramural stuff I pretty much quit the work outs that I used to do.
In light of the many many health issues that have come up I've decided that I really need to try to get healthy again. I mean I have a metabolic disorder which is all the more reason for me to work on getting back to a healthy weight. The main reason I am doing this is for my health, so I'm not all the worried about how I will look on the beach. I mean I live out on the be regardless of how fat I am. I just know that the way I look will be an extra benefit to my health.
Anyone have any great tips on how to get back into running shape. Like basically going from I haven't done any "real" running since high school 5 years ago. Right now I'm trying running for 60 seconds and walking for 120 seconds and I repeat that for about 30 mins. However, I'm so out of shape the end of that 30 mins I'm doing more walking than running. But would y'all say that I'm going on the right track? I am also running on the sand so I know that helps out a bit. 6/14/2010 12:36:25 PM |

I'm only going to say what I did, and your mileage may vary.
I just started running a normal pace, as in like a 9 or 10 minute mile pace, and went as far as I could before stopping. At first it was just up the hill, then it was down the block, then farther. I did this every day.
Over a month you'll notice this increasing. You just have to keep at it.6/14/2010 12:50:03 PM |

Yeah...I just went to the doctor Friday. That is the recent events that have been going on. I mean I have the ability to lose weight, obviously. But she basically said, normally it takes a person one week to lose 1 or 2 lbs. For me it will take two weeks to lose 1 or 2 lbs. I mean nothing crazy, but just enough for me to know that I have to work twice as hard. And I'm not complaining about it, or making excuses, I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right so that my efforts don't go to waste.
^Thanks, that's what I was pretty much putting my money on. I mean I remember in high school we'd start the beginning of practices with a 5 min fun run, and do those for a day or two and then gradually start adding a min until we were running for 30 mins.
I'm also really worried about my carb intake. Like so far today the biggest percentage of my calories have come from carbs. However I feel like I'm eating healthy, blueberries, strawberries, soy milk, grilled chicken breast, and green beans. Am I doing it wrong?
