FACEPALM... did you reread what you were about to post... I mean i understand what you tried to say but seriously,,, when you finish 2ND how are you trailing two teams in Duke and Carolina... looks like he only trailed one that season

cause i mean you said he spent ALL of his final 5 years trailing them...

I didn't like him just the same, but when you stomp on the man... stomp on him properly and don't let specifics slide.

He was a successful coach. He was never going to be the big winning coach. This has been said numerous times. We get it

In those five years he had more wins than UNC.....so no we weren't trailing UNC.

Sendek also lost to Carolina twice during the year we finished 2nd. Still, the biggest beef you could possibly raise is that one of those seasons, we didn't trail one of our other two rivals, so I'm not sure why this is "facepalm" worthy. Let me be clearer: throughout Sendek's final tenure, he consistently under-performed against UNC and Duke through the regular season, post season, and in head-to-head competitions, with very few exceptions. Is that worded precisely enough for you.

The irony is that the only reason we're still talking about the man is because I make one point in a post and some of you decide to start flying off the handle about it. If you guys "get it" and "understand what I tried to say" (in your words), then I'm not sure why you even brought it up unless you're just trolling.... which I suspect you are.

We won that game by 14, 88-74. While he did have a good game against them (and I'm referring to him hitting an important 3 at the 4 minute mark), he only had 15 points (5 of which came at the foul line) in that game.

Tracy Smith was 10-12, with 23 points.
Dennis Horner was 8-15 with 20 points
Scott Wood had 10
Degand had 11

He hit an important shot, no doubt, but he didn't "beat Duke." The team did.

Maybe you should sit the rest of this thread out and get your facts straight.

It's pretty apparent that you didnt see the game. If you can't see that that three was as much the reason we won as any turnover or missed shot is the reason we lost any other game, then I don't know what to tell you.

Holy fuck...Degand had 11 points against Duke?? I think Duke was the reason we beat Duke that day. If you let Degan score 11 points, you deserve to lose.

in his 2.3 years here (he was injured a good portion of his first year), he had at least a dozen games where he scored in double digits... and yes, sometimes against decent competition. remember "degand is a golden god"?

I really don't know why you are trying to lecture me like I'm some kind of Sendek apologist. I haven't given my opinion on his tenure here or disagreed with you in any way, just simply pointing out your mistake of saying he was fired.

Apparently I was watching a lot closer than you since you seem to think that this particular shot won us the game with 4 minutes to go. We were ahead by 11 at that point (77-66) and while it was an important shot, we would not have won that game without Tracy being extremely hot as well as Horner. The final score was 88-74. That 3 didn't stop Duke from scoring more points. It probably hurt Miles Plumlee's ego a little bit cus he hit that shot about 2 feet back from the 3 point line in Plumlee's face. But it didn't crush Duke. They scored on just about every possession from there on out and so did we. The team won that game.

Either you just don't understand what I'm saying or you don't want to admit it. He had a good game and hit an important shot that helped us win but he didn't WIN the game for us. He hit 4 FGs the whole game. 2 were from 3.

^^Unless responding to you is equated with "lecturing", then I'm not sure what you're trolling about. I responded to your post because there was information to be added... anything more than that (including your perception of "lecturing") is completely your assumption.

Hopefully despite my "lecturing" you still saw and understand the explanation of how Sendek still failed to consistently rise above UNC and Duke in his final 5 years, including the year he finished 2nd in the ACC and lost to UNC during both meetings.

I have one hope for this year, but it isn't an expectation.

Herb and Sidney both made the ACC Tournament Final in their first season. I'd like to see that continue, but it's a pretty damned unreasonable expectation so I'm not counting on it by any means.

Still, it'd be a nice end to a season without expectations.

ncwolfpack, I see the post where you first "made a comment". You quoted a sentence where I commented that Sendek didn't improve "so we fired him". When I logged in and saw your post, there was another one shortly after it commenting on Herb's record. Your post didn't make a comment or bold anything, so based on the other conversation about Herb's record, I assumed you were rolling your eyes at my comment that Herb didn't improve.

Regardless, I still addressed your "comment" (which was just a quote of mine followed by an emoticon) regarding the word "fired". I guess you missed this...

^^^It's not like his coaching tenure is happening in a vacuum. The only fair basis for evaluating what Gottfried does with the Wolfpack is to compare him against the coaches we remember. Less and less of us on this board remember Robinson and even less remember Valvano. The only natural basis for comparisons will be Sendek and Lowe, and in order to do that the full opinions of their tenures should be fleshed out.

Of course this may not the thread for that, but such a discussion is natural.

In addition to timswar's comment, we have to keep in mind that just as Lowe was considered a terrible coach by most people's standards, Herb Sendek was often touted as a very capable coach by the media and a vocal block of the fanbase.

Completely agree that this may not be the thread (or really the time) to dive into that, but it's relevant conversation, especially when base lining what you expect out of a new coach in the long run.

Massive. Gottfried's thumbprint is an up-tempo offense. Having a small forward like Warren would give Gottfried a player with outstanding potential.

It seems pretty credible that he and his crew are getting some of the top players in the country to commit, after he took a break from coaching and hasn't coached a single game for the Wolfpack yet.

^Negative. The only reason we are judging him by his recruiting at the moment is because he hasn't coached any games. As he goes through his first two seasons, the standard will become his record.

I honestly dont think there is a single thing that I would do differently than what Gottfried has done so far. I guess the only knock on him that I could find is him letter Harrow go, but in hindsight that might have been a blessing in disguise since it led to us landing Purvis and Lewis.

What he has been able to do in such a short amount of time is hard to wrap my head around. He assembled a great staff, changed the mindset and work ethic of the current players, and put together the #2 recruiting class in the country (all while winning recruiting battles against Duke and UNC). I know the last and biggest hurdle to cross is Gottfrieds ability to turn this momentum off the court into wins on the court, but nothing I have seen so far would make me think that he cant make that happen.

So pumped right now. In Gott we trust

the fuck are you even talking about

I meant that I havent second guessed anything that Gottfried has done to this point. Which is saying a lot since there were a lot of questionable coaching decisions made by Lowe throughout his tenure. Obviously Gottfried has been a monster on the recruiting trail, but he also has put his fingerprint on every other part of the team since taking over (conditioning, enthusiasm and expectation of players, bringing in successful people to speak to team, etc.)

It doesnt matter what you say in this forum, as soon as you express your opinion it will get ripped apart by everyone else like some sort of dick measuring contest. it gets old, its okay to agree with someones post too

Quote :

I'm sure he could've got Harrow to stay if he bent over backwards and didnt aim to overhaul the culture Lowe created. I'm sure its hard to stick to your guns and allow a 5-star PG with starting experience walk away, but in the end I think it was a blessing in disguise
