The whole point is to find the next Kryzooski, Knight, Izzo, etc. All coaches have to start somewhere....and hopefully Debbie has an eye for young coaching talent.

Can we hire an up and comer that might take us to the promised land? Of course. It'll probably take a little while though. I'm so jaded now about NC State basketball that I can't get excited about the prospects of a new coach unless it's a monumental hire. Now I know that Stevens isn't coming here and knew about his contract, I just was using him as an example of a big name. I know there's maybe at best a 1% chance that Barnes will come here too. This fanbase wants to get to the NCAA Tournament now, especially with the talent we have in place. I don't know if they can wait around for 2 seasons of NIT invites like in Izzo's first two years, or losing seasons like in K's first 3 years. We have the longest streak in the ACC of not getting to the NCAA Tournament. Will the fanbase really give some guy from the Missouri Valley Conference time to learn the ropes of the ACC? It isn't wrong to want an established coached that has proven that they can compete in a power conference. If a change is made and it's not a big name coach I'll still support him. I'm just not going to be all giddy like a kid on Christmas Eve thinking about all the possibilities that lie ahead, only to be possibly disappointed with socks and clothes rather than receive some bad ass toy/video game system.
All I'm saying is that if we open up the checkbook and lure a big name coach away there's a higher chance that we'll all get what we want. Some say, "oh well we can't afford ______." That's bull. With how crazy and starved this fanbase is, a winning NC State basketball program would bring in a ton of money. We have one of the biggest arenas in the NCAA, with one of the highest number of suites too. If the RBC Center is sold out even for the cupcake games, like the way UK does, rather than just for Duke and UNC, then there will be plenty of money to be made. 1/31/2011 9:28:30 PM |

i feel like in college basketball today, big name coaches don't just up and leave programs. as long as you are making a good salary, can consistently get into the tournament, and have the opportunity to attain a top 25 ranking there really isn't a reason to jump ship. 1/31/2011 9:42:05 PM |

The only advantage we get from a big name coach is that we have a better chance at keeping all of our players and all of our recruits. So as long as we can retain most of our talent, I don't give a shit if we clone John Wooden or get the Broughton High School equipment manager to coach us....as long as he's a good coach. Sidney is obviously not a great basketball coach. We need someone who can coach these guys. I don't care if he's a "name" or not.

speaking of retaining talent, props to Coach Bzdelik at Wake for keeping all 5 of Gaudio's recruits. Even though they suck this year, they were all 3* and 4* recruits and top 25 players at their respective positions.
They're freshmen now, but they'll be competitive in 2 years when they're juniors and Stewart and Harris will be seniors 2/1/2011 10:10:22 AM |

I don't see why it doesn't?? You're 18 years old and the coach that recruited you just got fired. All of a sudden you hear that Tubby Smith/Rick Barnes just got hired, and you're all like, "that's awesome, that guy won a lot at Kentucky/Texas/Minnesota and has put tons of players in the NBA, this could be good." As opposed to, "who the fuck is that?? He coaches at (insert name of mid-major program here), what state is that in??"
Actually meeting with the new coach and getting to know him and hearing his "pitch" is probably more important...but you can't deny that the initial reaction to the "name" isn't important.2/1/2011 10:17:40 AM |

You don't think there might be other advantages to a big name coach? Say, the fact that they are a good coach. Or perhaps the national visibility it would bring to the program. Just seems like a poor choice of words.2/1/2011 10:36:14 AM |

Christ guys...I'm just saying I don't give a shit whether or not he's a "name" coach. I just want a good fucking coach. It was in response to a poster saying that he couldn't get excited if we didn't hire a big name coach. First...its going to be tough to get a name coach in here anyways. We might have a shot at someone like Tubby who is older and wants to get the fuck out of Minnesota and back near his family on the East Coast. But it's going to have to be a situation like that, because a name coach who is doing well at a school that is either on par or better than us (which is where 100% of these coaches already are) is NOT going to come here.
So just give me a good coach and I'll be excited. You guys are making up arguments that I haven't started.2/1/2011 12:14:07 PM |

If we continue to fire coaches every few years, we're going to become the NCAA version of the Redskins, and we're going to suck forever.
I didn't mean to turn this into the new coaching carousel....
Can anyone find some literature about why Uchebo/Tylers are interested in NC State? I don't think there's any indication that they would stay if Lowe gets booted.2/1/2011 12:49:20 PM |

Uchebo is from Nigeria and has family in the area, so I think we have a good shot at keeping him even through a coaching change. But regardless of that our 2011/2012 recruiting classes ARE NOT good enough to keep Lowe around if he isn't winning games.

Notice that I said the coach should be fired if he misses the tourney three years in a row. It shouldn't be that hard to take NC State to the tournament 3 times a decade. If that's unreasonable then I imagine the majority of us will become occasional fans, and by occasional fans I mean we'll get interested in the team when we either make the tournament or it's apparent that a bid is forthcoming. Twice in a decade? Could anyone really get excited about that?2/1/2011 11:18:30 PM |

That said, he is a skilled player in the European mold. Though he missed his lone three point attempt, it looked good so you can tell he has that kind of range. He runs the court well and actually handles the basketball well in the open court. Mikulic is alert for offensive rebounds and to his credit doesn’t waste time and motion bringing the ball down and going back up in traffic. He lacks strength and therefore isn’t much of a post scoring presence at this time but his future is playing facing the basket." |
