i thought it was free for family but there had to be empty seats on the plane. the problem being that it isn't very common that there are empty seats anymore

^^My inlaws have a neighbor that is a flight attendant for some airline (southwest maybe?) but he gets a certain number standby tickets every year that he can give to anybody (I'm not sure about direct family and free flights though). He used one of those tickets last year to fly in one of my wife's bride's maids from NYC (to greensboro) and it was $50 round trip. They are standby tickets though so you aren't guarenteed a ticket on a particular flight, just the next available seat on any flight to where your going. She got both flights she wanted/needed though without a problem. The neighbor said the only time it's really a problem are holidays.
