"I didn’t find out about [Hansbrough] being hired by dentistry until after she was on the job,” says Thorp. “That wouldn’t be unusual because we have hundreds of development officers, and I wouldn’t normally be told that one that works on in the units was being hired.""

They just don't get it. They (coaches and administrators) don't need to know about every student and employee. They do need to know about a select few student athletes and any family of said athletes being hired by the University.

Quote :
"how has holden thorp not resigned yet? the balls on this guy, i'll tell you"

Its all part of the plan. Thorp rose to the top directly through the areas under investigation. He knows everything that went on and is in full damage control. If the ax falls, he becomes the rogue chancellor scapegoat and enjoys a nice pension of hush money from the NC taxpayers.

Lawyers: UNC player not complicit in academic fraud

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/unc/story/11531380/

Quote :
"In their latest filing, on filed Sept. 7, McAdoo's lawyers offered five documents from UNC's own investigation as evidence that McAdoo "did not knowingly or willfully obtain improper assistance."

"By UNC's own admission, there are were serious irregularities in the way in which the course in question was conducted," McAdoo's lawyers wrote. They use the university's internal investigations into the AFAM department and a report on irregularities in the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes to demonstrate that UNC had doubts about the integrity of the class in which McAdoo allegedly cheated.

They argue that the court didn't have all the information necessary before it dismissed McAdoo's case. His lawyers wrote:

Mr. McAdoo contends that, if his claims are allowed to proceed to discovery and trial, th evidence will show that he followed the instructions of his tutor and academic advisor in preparing the paper he submitted in his Swahili 403 class, and that prior to its submission the paper was reviewed and approved by both the academic advisor and the tutor, who were at all relevant times employees of UNC and under the ultimate supervision of Chancellor Thorp"

So cheating in a fake class makes it better?

A player can't be complicit in cheating if he doesn't even know someone is doing his school work

They're trying to say, "UNC led McAdoo through the process of cheating in a way that made him think he was doing everything kosher. Therefore, it's not his fault."

which might be a valid legal claim. I mean, if the dude is so stupid that he doesn't know he's cheating, can you really say that he's cheating? Then again, at the end of the day, the NCAA can do whatever the hell it wants, so McAdon't really doesn't have any case anyway

Good point on the radio, Carolina is saying travelling with the team was part of work capacity because fans go to games too, but if she stopped travelling with the team after her son graduated then even having the paperwork its harder to justify that as a University related task and it could potentially be an impermissible benefit.

Curious. The 216 numbers were supposed to be released in 30 days. Isn't that time period up this week?

Add me to the list of people that think that nothing will come off of the recent UNC or Duke scandals. The NCAA is a deregulated entity that will move according to what fits their own personal interest, which in this case would be not to punish their main cash cows.

i dunno what will come of all this new stuff, but Penn State was a pretty big college football brand, and the NCAA had the option to leave it up to the authorities and not intervene, but they chose to give them the pseudo-death penalty, so i'm not giving up on this yet

That's why the NCAA won't do anything to dook or unc-ch.

Kupec created Whoresbrough's position and his department funded it. So now we have employment fraud.

IC is going to implode if it hasn't already. If this blatant lie by the Chancellor of the university doesn't convince the NCAA to do something then nothing will.

honestly this is just absolute hubris.

no other way to describe it. just blatant blatant disregard for any set of rules in every direction that you look, all the while being surprised that anyone cares. and i do think that they're genuinely surprised.

"UNC: Taxpayers won't pay for academic consultants
The Associated Press
Published: Tuesday, Sep. 11, 2012 - 4:48 pm

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Consultants called in after discoveries of academic fraud at North Carolina's flagship public university say they're giving the school a 20 percent discount on hourly fees.

Documents released by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Tuesday show Washington-area consulting firm Baker Tilley will bill a discounted hourly rate of up to $440 an hour. That's for helping former North Carolina Gov. Jim Martin look for academic irregularities after one department popular with athletes found instructors who didn't teach, grades that were changed and faculty signatures faked on grade reports.

Baker Tilly also is doing a review of the school's academic policies that the consultants estimate will cost the school between $70,000 to $90,000 plus expenses.

The university says state taxpayers won't pay for the consultants' work.

I don't think he was lying here. The original hiring was in the dentistry school and Thorp claims no prior knowledge of. The second job where she got in trouble he did approve of after telling Kupec he could not hire her directly. Still shady but let's not push for Thorp's ouster he's been an absolute pleasantry running this ship into the ground.
