Quote :
"Lewis stays committed to Wolfpack

By Tim Hall

As Mark Gottfried continues to get his feet wet in Raleigh and build his coaching staff, one of the next great questions is this — which players will that staff have to coach?

Players like Ryan Harrow and C.J. Leslie were undecided about their futures at N.C. State after the Gottfried hire. Others like Richard Howell and Lorenzo Brown bought in immediately and said they'll return.

And with recruits to worry about on top of the current players, at least one of them is still coming to the Wolfpack.

"I'm really looking forward to playing for Coach Gottfried (at N.C. State) because he reached out to me last week over the phone," Forsyth Country Day (NC) point guard Tyler Lewis told 620 The Buzz on Tuesday. "I really liked him a lot and I'm starting to like all the assistant coaches he's bringing in."

And even though Sidney Lowe didn't bring an NCAA Tournament appearance to the Wolfpack, he was at least starting to have an impact on the recruiting trail.

"I committed to play with Coach Lowe, that was a coach I really liked. He became one of my favorites," Lewis said. "He reached out to me as a basketball player and a person and he and the whole coaching staff made me fall in love with N.C. State. I just felt like I had to honor my commitment to the school."

In a way, both the current and the former Wolfpack coach had a hand in Lewis' recruitment. Lowe helped Lewis fall in love with N.C. State, and Gottfried said the right things to keep it that way.

For the time being Lewis joins center Josip Mikulic of Coconut Creek, Fla as the two commits for the 2012 class.

Lewis described his game as one that would flourish in Mark Gottfried's up tempo style. And while he's not afraid to shoot the ball he's more comfortable being the point guard that gets all of his teammates involved."

not sure if they've made "official statements" or whatever, but at least per harrow's facebook page/twitter, it sounded like he'd bought in. but never know i guess.

It's starting to sound that Lowe sold these kids on the school's tradition as much as himself. Good news for a future! Thanks Lowe, we owe you!

"Lewis wins Spencer Award

By MASON LINKER
Published: April 10, 2011

Tyler Lewis is working to be able to do everything better next season.

And if he listens to his coach, Lewis, a 5-foot-10 junior point guard from Forsyth Country Day, will be making as much noise with his mouth as with his flashy game.

"He has to keep pushing other people, not only during the game but at practice and during the school day," Dawson said. "That will be beneficial to him in the future, and his (college) coaches would be impressed by that. That might allow them to hand him the keys a little earlier than anticipated."

Lewis has committed to N.C. State and said he plans to stick with the Wolfpack despite the coaching change. He has won over many admirers with a style that seems to include a sixth sense. His passing is otherworldly, and he has a knack for working out of a pickle when surrounded by bigger, stronger and often more athletic opponents.

Lewis also has received the ultimate area compliment — winning the 2011 Frank Spencer Award as the Winston-Salem Journal's high school boys player of the year.

Lewis, a three-time selection to the All-Northwest team, finished ahead of Trey Ervin of Mount Tabor in All-Northwest voting by area coaches to win the award named after Spencer, a former sports editor of the Journal.

Coach Shonn Brown of Charlotte Christian said there's no doubt that some players have more physical gifts than Lewis. But Brown said he isn't sure any player has the mental makeup Lewis has.

"Small things make him stand out in a crowd," Brown said. "The kid never picks up his dribble, and that's a huge asset for a guard. He is crafty and savvy when he goes to the middle. He knows how to finish, and he also understands how to engage the defense but not be married. He basically says 'I am going to dump you off here, and then I am going to dump the ball off there.'"

Brown said that Lewis' performance during FCD's 67-64 loss to powerhouse Arden Christ School in the 2010 NCISAA 3-A semifinals provided plenty of proof of Lewis' college potential.

"Those guys were more athletic and physically gifted, but he was right there with them on the floor in terms of basketball ability," Brown said. "And probably beyond in terms of basketball IQ. To me, it's huge to have a guy with that intelligence, and if you have the IQ, you can negate a guy's quickness. He has that."

Coach David Gaines of Christ School, whose team has won five straight NCISAA 3-A state titles, said Lewis understands how teams try to defend him.

And like Brown, Gaines' comments indicate Lewis' biggest is weapon is what lies between his ears.

"To be fair to him and no knock on the guys playing with him, I think at the next level, for him, there are going to be some real athletes with size as his teammates that will make him a better player," Gaines said. "But if people don't think he is athletic enough to play at the highest level, I disagree. I think he will be better simply because his teams will be more athletic and better.

"A kid with his basketball IQ, that will just be embellished with quality players around him.""

yeah that doesn't make much sense, but anytime an opposing coach gushes about a player, he's earned it for sure

Same compliment Richard Marshall always got in high school.

With quality players around him, his basketball IQ/tenacious passing ability at the point could really make a team special.

Or some kind of coach jibberish like that.

Harris and Uchebo are (hopefully) coming in 2011. And maybe that Raymond guy. And possibly Payne from Iowa (RS'ed last year).

Rivals posted an article today about Nerlens Noel, brother of football commit Rodman Noel...seems like he'd be willing to listen if we were interested because of his brother. Here's a link to his profile:

from the WRAL article today.
Quote :
"“We’re just trying to make sure we connect with these guys, we didn’t recruit them,” said Gottfried, “and so we have a job to do to make sure there’s some trust built.”

He said that all of the players have told him they plan on being back at NC State next year, but he understands that there is always a level of uncertainty with a coaching change and the players may still change their minds."

Sounds like everyone is back!

Funny that you two were the main ones saying we wouldn't land a coach and everyone would leave if we forced Lowe out. Aren't you glad you were wrong now?

^^ Actually if you look back you will see I pretty much always stated it would be a dumb move for them to transfer if they were eyeing the pros. However, please continue to make stuff up it is entertaining. The one thing I did say was I was pretty sure if Greggggg was our coach we would have had some transfers (and given how much pissing and moaning has occurred I think that assumption looks even more well grounded).

If Gottfried can lure a top recruit quickly, it will build some serious momentum for the program, and generate more buzz that feeds itself with more high profile recruits, Gottfried is every bit as charismatic as Lowe, and a more proven coach.

we're probably too late to join the Lacey party. But it would be an incredible pick-up. Gottfried may have recruited him at UA, when Lacey was a freshman or soph.

MG knows how to play the game. Doesn't even matter if he gets rejected this late in the recruiting game. The recruits will see Bill Self, John Calipari, Jim Calhoun and Mark Gottfried. Exposure.
