You remember when UNC hired an agent onto their coaching staff, players were receiving untold thousands in impermissible benefits, a tutor was doing the schoolwork for several athletes, the administration set up fake classes and handed out grades when the athletes grades in other classes threatened their eligibility, and they hired their star player's mom to get him to stay for his senior year?

Pepperidge Farm remembers. Turns out they got a few scholarships yanked and a bowl ban for a year they likely won't even make a bowl anyway. UNC could get away with covering up a few murders at this point.

^^ I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist here, but this scandal can bring it out of anyone...

If I were UNC this is exactly what I would do. Why would we publicly fire the chancellor and bring on questions of why? What was the chancellor involved in..etc.. By going public with the whole "we unanimously voted to ask for a reconsideration, " they avoid this.

What I heard about Thorp is that he would go back into the Chemistry dept as a professor (not sure if he'd get the dept head job again), but that he'd still collect his $450k salary or whatever. Sounds like a great deal for the taxpayers! Seriously if he is stepping down, why would the university pay him that salary if they were not trying to keep him quiet and content.

Shit if I was him, I'd do the same as I'd love to make the same salary with less responsibility.

It is typical for tenured faculty to keep their administrative salary for at least a year or two when they return to the faculty. Keeping the salary forever is questionable though.

I tend to go with occam's razor for this one. The guy is probably just worn down from dealing with problem after problem. He's probably sticking it out near a full year to be the 'nice guy' and allow them to transition during the summer, a down period.
