Repost from last page for traub:
Quote :
"Anybody getting a no sim card error on their 5? I have a verizon wireless 5, and it has recently started popping up the no sim card message. I have reset network settings, done a few resets, and checked the sim card itself. Things will work ok for a little bit then the problem reappears."

I haven't had any trouble with mine. You might want to pull your card and make sure there's no crud inside of the SIM slot, or just go to a Verizon store and get the card replaced.

While on the topic of SIM cards... I've got an update on my PNC data woes.

Last week I called Verizon Tech Support to find out what could be done. After explaining that this appears to be a device specific problem and not related to the overall network, the girl I spoke with said she'd try a few things. She had me pull my SIM while she "reset" the system in regards to my phone. A few minutes later and I was online again... text and data worked fine. It wasn't until 2 hours later that I discovered that I was completely unable to make or receive calls.

Off to the Verizon store I went. The girl had apparently entered my IMEI incorrectly - off by one digit. Updating it in the system didn't fix the problem, so the guy helping me decided to do a SIM swap. Once it reactivated, everything worked as expected.

Fast forward to last night at PNC - data finally worked! I mention the whole story above because I'm not sure if the SIM swap or the "reset" was responsible for resolving the issue. Had the IMEI been reentered correctly, maybe it alone would have worked? So if any of you want to give it a shot, call 611 and go for tech support. Make sure you test LTE/3G, text messages, AND voice before disconnecting. Hopefully you won't need a SIM swap .

So Doss2k and BDubLS1, I hope this helps!

stupid question. is there anyone out there that carries a separate iPhone for work? if so, do you have a separate iTunes account for your work phone?

i never use my work iPhone for anything other than texting my crew in the field and making business related calls. no apps, no anything.

So I've gotten 3 "No SIM card activated" messages in the last 2 days. I've been able to turn it off and on and it works, but that shits annoying. I'll have to wait to get something to shove in that little hole (that's what he said) to make sure it's clean and everything, but I've got an otterbox on it and everything. If anybody has any other ideas besides complaining to apple or att let me know

^^ i own my iphone and have my work SIM in it - no second phone - is that an option?

i used to be stuck on the whole i can't lose my phone # that i've had for 10+ years - then i moved out of the country for 2 years and stopped caring - there are too many ways to be contacted nowadays and if someone didn't have my phone number they'd find me if needed

i wouldn't mind giving up my personal, but my company is really anal about data and messaging and all that stuff. I'm one of, if not, the youngest employees and no one else really uses their phones to their true potential. I think they'd freak out when they saw my usage habits.

anyone else's iPhone 5 started dying at 20%?

it's almost clock work for me these days. 20%, boom, it shuts down. it'll usually power back on after about 10 minutes, show roughly 15% and allow me to use it for another 5-10 minutes before shutting down again completely.

i swear Apple puts a kill switch inside these things to make them self destruct after a newer model has been released. Just get me to the 6, that's all I ask.

means you need a new battery.

They are cheap and really easy to replace.

They are easy to replace, but (and maybe I'm just really unlucky) they are also easy to break. I tried to replace the battery in my 5, and when I put it back together again the power button and home button no longer worked. Apparently I disconnected some cable inside or something. So now my iPhone doesn't have working buttons anymore.

Fun fact: if you need to put a SIM card in a phone but it's too big to fit, you can literally cut it down to size and it will work (assume you don't chop up the important bits).

I'm sure this has been asked a dozen times in this thread, but what cases do you folks use (if any)?

I've rocked a naked iPhone for years and for whatever reason I wanna get one now. I don't want some generic case you can get off the shelf at the Apple store. Looking for something unique.

I just switched from one that I can't remember to a magpul field case and really like it. Very thin, won't get caught in my pocket, and it gives pretty good protection. Plus it only costs $12

I dropped my phone on a tile floor yesterday and busted up the digitizer. Hopefully Verizon isn't going to be a pain and maybe I can get a 5S out of it since I have insurance. This is the first time I've permanently damaged a phone since I first started carrying one over 10 years ago.

This is what I use. http://www.zoogue.com/iphone-5s-5-social-pro-cases/

they usually have sales on them. i got mine for free +S/H when the 5 was released.

it's the single best case I have ever owned. just yesterday my phone fell out of my jacket pocket while on my bike cruising down the road around 15mph. Not a scratch on it thanks to the case.

Verizon tells me that Asurion will only replace my 5 with a 5C, which I don't want. I want another 5 or a 5S. Apple won't replace the screen because they say my phone's water damage indicator is red, which is completely unrelated to the screen problem I'm having.

I'm sure it's been answered somewhere in the thread, but who around here will replace it for me. I don't think I have the patience to do it myself. Should I give fregac a shout at his shop (Undead Electronics)?

not sure if this is common knowledge about apple screens but i'm curious if the iphone screen loses it's smudge/finger print resistance over time and usage.

my personal iphone 5 is like a smear magnet. i can't seem to keep the greasy feel and appearance off of it no matter how clean my hands are. but my work 5C that is brand new seems to wipe clean easily and even after extended use only shows a few small smudges and fingerprints.

My 4s stopped charging today when it is powered on.

It only charges when off...

I am not sure if its the charging dock or the motherboard...ordered a dock off amazon to replace it.

Really love the 4s and dont want to spend 300 on a new phone.

Anyone had experience with Apple wayyy after your warranty is up?

I had a contract on this 4S.

I swapped out the dock...still not charging.

Apparently it has to do with a faulty bit on the motherboard...it is repairable...but its a bit of trouble.

I want to get it fixed because even if i get a 5 i will want to sell this one and it would need to work/charge/sync.

anyone have experience with soldering on these?

just an FYI in case people didnt know. My ex washed her iPhone 4 in the washer a while back. Did everything i could to salvage it, but it was a total loss. No insurance, so Verizon was no help. After some investigating I discovered apple's Out-of-Warranty replacement. Guy at the store basically said if you could bring it in in one piece (or so), you would qualify.

Only cost $149 for the 4, and she got a refurbished phone that looked brand new. And it did nothing to her contract. Another one of her friends broke her phone, but was elligble for an upgrade so had planned on going to the 5. Before she got the 5, we took in her 4s, replaced it for $199, and then sold it for a decent profit before she went and got the 5. Its $199 for the 4s and $269 for the 5,s,c.

You can find more info on their page under the last option

Because with cell phones, especially smart phones, that's rarely possible. After swapping the speaker in my wife's iPhone 4s FOUR FUCKING TIMES (it kept blowing out the speaker), I finally said fuck it.

I can't believe people still take all the bullshit with the iPhone. AppleCare, insurance, all that crap. 90% of the time they just claim water damage and deny everything. Those phones are so goddamn fragile and delicate, you need a giant rubber case to even hope to protect them.

My mom dropped her Nokia 920 a half dozen times on asphalt, beat the phone to hell. 10 dollars for a replacement polycarbonate shell, 5 minutes to swap it out and the damn thing is literally as good as new. No ugly ass cases, just a solid damn phone.

Can't say any of the Samsung devices are any better than Apple's stuff either, but at least they don't tend to dick people around with warranty claims nearly as much.

I've had an iPhone since the day the original came out, never had a case on a single one, dropped every one of them multiple times, and never have had one break. Maybe you're overstating the issue just a little bit.

Well I've had an outstanding experience w/the iPhones (have had every one), I used a minimal case about 3/4ths of the time. I do mean minimal btw, my current one is 1/3rd of 1mm thin. I've dropped many many times. I actually had water damage to my phone once but they covered it (despite all 3 tripped sensors) anyway -w/out Apple care, which I've only purchased once out of 7? iPhones.

Also, you can find many endurance/torture tests b/w the iPhone and a comparable high end phone, they typically hold up rather well.

^^^ This coming from a Microsoft employee

I didn't have iPhones for too many years, but I always had good luck with them. They're built solid as hell, and I nor anyone I know have gotten fucked over by Apple Care, but admittedly that sample size is low as not many people I know have had to take one in.

so I had a life proof on my i phone 5 and dropped it on a cup of water and it zapped the damn phone. I tried the rice trick. didn't work. took it to apple they opened it up and water damage obviously. Some other girl in there was telling me her phone did the same on spring break and that she looked online took the face of the phone off and it worked again...any suggestions on here how to get a warranty out of somebody or whatever because I am using the 4S in the mean time and the damn thing blows.

dont think so...no way to prove it was their design fault.

Also, just get it working again and swap out the water detector dots.

or swap them out anyways if it wont even cut on.

Yes but it's extra. Verizon's come with the warranty or if you buy directly through Life proof, it's a $10 add-on. Otherwise there's no warranty against water damage.

How do I switch out the dots? As long as it doesn't show water damage the girl at apple said they will replace it for free. I have it sitting in RICE but the damn thing is most definitely shot. Luckily I had an I phone 4S but the thing is so slow and the speaker muffles for anything I do like voxer, snap chat, etc. Any help would be much appreciated. Like to go in get the 5 replaced and while there have them fix the darn speaker on the 4S

alright i need some help pretty please.

I moved to St. Maarten and took an old Iphone 4s from a friend of mine with me. His phone isn't under contract and he's already upgraded to the Iphone 5s.

According to the website AT&T should unlock the phone for me so I can use it with the carriers on the island. But, they're being cunts and are stonewalling my friend and won't send him the unlock code.

That being said, as someone who has used only android phones up until this point I need help jailbreaking/unlocking this phone so I can use it here. I have a sim card from a local phone company to put into the phone, I just have no idea how to proceed from here. PLS!

There are services available that allow you to unlock the phones for a price. Google should be able to help you out, or check ebay. It used to be ~$25-$35 to unlock an ATT phone, but I've heard it's gone up recently because the process has changed. But yeah, as long as the phone isn't associated with a line that's still under contract, ATT is required to unlock them for free for the original owner of the phone. If that phone isn't under contract anymore, I'd just get your friend to call ATT corporate and keep asking to speak to a manager until they get it resolved.

I have a complete dead I phone 5. Looks brand new. Got wet somehow. took it to the I fix it place and they said it caused the battery and the front facing camera to not work and 140 to fix . Anyways I took those little indicators off and took it to apple and they were like this has been tampered with. Should I buy those stickers that you guys posted above or is there a better option to get some money for this thing? thanks!
