most people when they start moving away from cheap lagers to nicer beers start doing it with the hefes and wheat beers, and the more they experiment, the more they can handle the hops and the more they start liking IPA's and pale ales. I like them all, and it really depends on the day on what I'm going to get. The only beers I'm not big on are Stouts and porters (and even some of those are really good to me).

some people never get into them- definitely an acquired taste. The hops burn off some of your tastebuds (not really, but they do numb them up - this is just how it was taught to me), and then you can start to taste all the other flavors in there. This is a weird sensation and takes a while to get used to, but once you do, it is amazing- I'm sure the same for wines and coffees, neither of which I have given a real shot

^^^no, IPA's do... wheat beers typically are very lite on hops (if you can taste any at all) so you won't have that experience- they are traditionally sweeter/fruitier
