Yeah, that shit was great, easily the best and most emotionally powerful scene throughout the entire movie. That was without a doubt Ewen McGregror's greatest moment: his acting was admirable, I could feel Obiwan's pain and the treachery that he felt at the hands of his former friend and fellow Jedi. 5/24/2005 1:13:54 AM |

^^ yeah, it was dumb. Is it too unreasonable to ask good/bad guys to do a thorough job and not dick around. If he were really sad about the betrayal, he would have put anakin out of his misery.
It's awesome that stupidity became a major plot point.

What really mystified me about that scene was that I had been under the impression long before seeing the movie that Anakin DID die. Palpatine arrived just in the nick of time to use his Sith powers of "midichlorian life motivation" (or something like that) to bring him back... somewhat. Because Anakin Skywalker truly DID die, it makes Obi-Wan's explanation to Luke about his father make much more sense (from a certain point of view, of course, LOL). It also makes more sense that Obi-Wan did truly believe him to be dead, because one would think that he'd be willing to mercy kill Anakin. Just think of all of the suffering he could have potentially spared the galaxy if he had been willing to take one more stroke and finish him off for certain.
I would have preferred this much more, because it would have demonstrated that Palpatine really did have the power to influence life. I don't particularly like the notion that Anakin threw away everything away based simply on a lie - I wanted to see Palpatine really use his power, and then everyone would be like "holy shit, he really CAN do it." Also, it would make more sense in the character of Vader, because he really IS dead inside and has absolutely no remorse or emotion left in him (that is, until he redeems himself by saving Luke).
Which reminds me of something I read a loooooong time ago, the source of which eludes me. I seem to recall something about Palpatine being strong enough in the Force to be able to kill someone from a tremendous distance. We know that Vader can strangle someone from a short distance (Admiral Ozzel), but Palpatine was supposed to be able to to reach out across distances of a few systems. I've wondered if he didn't have something to do with Padme's death...? He does seem pretty pleased with himself when he tells Vader about it. 5/24/2005 8:21:51 AM |

i see what you are saying but i like the idea that he was persuaded by a lie. it fits palpatine and the sith and winning anakin over much better. i mean anakin was manipulated. it only fits to have it be a lie and i assumed it was from the first time he told anakin the story. 5/24/2005 8:25:59 AM |

Luke is strong with the Force, but he never gets the appropriate level of training to access his full potential as a Jedi Knight. 5/24/2005 10:11:13 AM |
Axelay All American 6276 Posts user info edit post |
Well, think about what little training Luke actually did have. He was only with Obi-Wan for a few weeks at most, and then only with Yoda for a few more weeks. In the very short time in which he began training to become a Jedi, he became strong enough to take on and eventually defeat one (Vader) who was believed to be more powerful than Yoda. He was, by and large, self-taught and yet he still managed to become a full-fledged Jedi Knight. Mind you, he didn't have the grace or the control of the Jedi of the Republic, but I'm always amazed when I think that he accomplished so much with so little training. 5/24/2005 10:58:40 AM |

The Prophecy.
Anakin, apaprantly created by the medachlorians.
Padme has twins. She could have been impregnated by anakin(leia), but the metachlorians could have created luke and it looked like she had twins.
You could even go as fat as Leia's children in the extended universe.
Who is the chosen one?
Without Luke Vader wouldnt have killed the emperor. You can make a strong case for Luke being the chosen one. 5/24/2005 11:16:08 AM |

in the novelization Obi Wan didn't want to kill a defensless man-- it was against the way of the Jedi (like when Anakin killed Dooku). Instead he decided to let the will of the force take care of it.
is what I've read elsewhere; I haven't read the actual novel yet.5/24/2005 11:34:11 AM |

Vader is still the one to kill the emperor. If there was no Vader then Luke himself could have never killed the emperor.
And if you wanna talk about the if's of stuff like Luke having to be around for Vader to have killed the emperor. Think about how Anakin had dreams about the future and how Padme would die during childbirth. If Anakin doesn't become Vader then Padme doesn't die during birth. It's all predestined to happen and lead up to Vader killing the emperor and restoring balance to the force.5/24/2005 11:39:55 AM |

I figure yoda focussed on teaching luke force manipulation and combat, while only giving him the basics of jedi-dom. You could argue that most of the training jedi receive in their early years is a scholarly education. Luke skipped the sage/general/healer/diplomat portion of the jedi training. 5/24/2005 11:40:51 AM |

There aren't only 2 Jedi's left. Obi-Wan and Yoda are the only known ones. The Empire spends the next 20-30 years hunting down the rest of them.5/24/2005 1:53:38 PM |

Lucas could feasibly do the final three episodes if it didn't take so long for him to make the movies. That would be awesome, wish he wouldn't stop with III, especially if he got someone else to help direct the rest (that's what he did with Return and Empire, right?). 5/24/2005 2:07:40 PM |

and freakin mace man he got his arm chopped off, got electricuted by the emperor guy for about 10seconds and THEN got "thrown" (by the force) out the broken window and fell a "bazillion" stories down.
unless im totally wrong im pretty sure it was supposed to be obvious that he died. Mace Windu was a very important Jedi and having Anakin be the cause of his death was supposed to be a big symbol for anakin turning to the dark side. i dont think itd have the same affect if mace didnt die 5/24/2005 4:11:21 PM |

EU book events follow: Anakin's lightsaber was recovered by some crazy dark jedi guy. said guy used luke's hand to make a clone and trained him in teh dark side. After the clone was pwnt either luke or mara jade found the lightsaber and luke gave it to her. I'm pretty sure that's how it happened anyway, it's been 10 years since I read those books. 5/24/2005 4:16:39 PM |
Axelay All American 6276 Posts user info edit post |
I also remember something like that. These events were actually covered in Timothy's Zahn's books. If memory serves, the guy's name was Jorus C'baoth, or something like that. (Someone please correct my spelling?) The blue lightsaber was indeed recovered with Luke's hand still firmly attached, and Jorus used that to clone his own "Luuke Skywalker." Luke took them both down, and recovered his father's lightsaber. It was later given to Mara Jade, who became Luke's wife.
And this is amazing that I know all of this since Zahn's books are pretty much the bulk of any of the EU stuff I've ever read. I'm very limited beyond the movies.
