^^^ I concur. I actually calculated my GPA the other day including all D's for this semester and next. I have enough of a GPA pad that I can afford to make D's and still graduate in May. Kinda a motivation killer. My only motivation is getting good grades for job reasons.

Secured transactions down with family law and payment systems to go. Done on thursday.

ew secured transactions was a horrible exam

i hate that class. i hated that test.

i'm done with exams ("real" exams) i have a takehome for child adv, a research paper for sociology and the law (hehe) and a 40+ page asset purchase agreement for commercial contract drafting

then i'm done. but at least i'm home for christmas and all of this stuff is due by dec 17th so i'm taking a few days off!!!

(p.s. cannot wait for may!)

OK this is really starting to piss me the fuck off. Here is a sample facebook status message from one of my classmates, posted around 2:30 AM.

"xxxx xxxxx: just got home from the lib, back tomm @ 8 to do it all over again...... sorry everyone im ignoring, dont take it personal"

Seriously? Either this girl is retarded, or she's full of shit. Who the fuck really needs to stay in the library from open to close on back to back days? Are these final exams really supposed to be that hard? I didn't study for more than an hour yesterday... our next final isn't until FRIDAY.

I'm really tired of people who go out of their way to make law school look harder than it really is. Or maybe this girl is just really slow or doesn't get it... but I don't see why she would want to advertise her stupidity on facebook.

Or maybe she doesn't do shit during the semester. I don't do any of the readings during the semester, pay attention during class, and then cram at the end of the semester. Depending on which subject it is depends on how much I study.

Plus, why not put the time in at the end of the semester? Why would you not want to get good grades?

When people tell me that they are only studying for a couple hours a day during exam period, this tells me either you really know your shit or you are destined to do poorly.

On a side note, last exam tomorrow - payment systems. Thank you Kinsler for making this clear for me. I otherwise wouldn't know the difference between bearer paper and order paper, nor would I know WTF a holder in due course is.

Sloppy drunk by 9 pm tomorrow!!!

Well, I go to every class, I pay attention, I already have the concepts down.

This girl that I quoted above also went to all the classes. We both go to every class/ Also, she's been making these types of facebook statuses all semester.

This is your first semester right? Maybe she's just not knowing what to expect from the exams and would rather err on the side of over-preparation? Or she thinks she's a bad test taker.

There are a lot of different ways of preparing for exams. The worst thing to do is compare your methods to someone else's. You know what works best for you, and I'm sure she's got a method down for herself too. I wouldn't worry about it.

No, that's BS. We've taken 2 midterms so far, and whether she did bad or well, saying you've been studying for 36 hours in the past 2 days is fucking lame. She just wants her facebook friends in NY to think this thing called "law school" is OH SO FUCKING HARD.

^^Good lord son....let it go.

Most of the reasons have already been listed, but there are plenty of law students who actually do put in that much time and need that much time to do well.

- This being the 1st semester, law school freaks a bunch of people out. If you think a little mid-term is going to ease their minds on how difficult or not-difficult the actual exam is going to be, then you are mistaken.

- Some people have trouble learning certain ways. Law school wasn't that difficult for me because I read with the quickness and have an excellent memory. But I think the majority of people have a tough time handling all the reading and learning in that particular way...especially in the first semester. Studying that much in the beginning is not that uncommon.

- She is probably trying to do extremely well. I made some A's and some C's in law school. There wasn't a huge difference between the amount of time I put into studying for the A's or the C's. Sometimes the exams would easier, or tougher, or I would just study/remember the right stuff. But one thing I did learn was that if doubled or tripled the time I put into studying, then I could probably assure that I wouldn't have gotten mostly A's. But I did a cost/benefit analysis on me enjoying life and getting A's, and said fuck the A's (plus I worked during school).

So get your panties out of a wad and let her be.

My law school was filled with these types. The professors perpetuated it though, as far as to make it harder than it really was. And most of the students hung on every word the professors said (as both law professors and spiritual leaders, go figure...)

But it's all about keeping it competitive, I suppose, and some kids get swallowed by that notion.

I can promise you that once you graduate and leave that place, what those people will and are doing won't mean shit, so try not to let it bother ya. But I totally know how you're feelin right now.

i get it too.

but i'm also more of a jbrick (well, i don't make Cs...ok fine, i've made like 2 and they were C+s ). i just want a B+ or A- average overall (which i have) and i chose to have a life in law school. WHICH, based on how my life has turned out, looking back i'm REALLY glad i did. i think i have perspective that a lot of those people don't have. all i know is i'm really glad i spent time with my family and came home on the weekends instead of studying 24/7. the sad thing is, a lot of the 24/7 study students aren't the ones doing the best (i'm talking about throughout the semester though...there are a lot of 24/7 studiers at the end cause we were the slackers during the year haha). either way, grades, especially from a 3rd or 4th tier or brand new school don't really matter as much as people think they do. and even if they do/did, there are more important things in my life than grades. but that is just me! if studying that much makes someone happy, then go for it i guess. but not having a social life (and i'm not saying that in the go out and party all the time sense, i just mean being a regular human being) may be something that people ONE DAY come to regret.

Waking up with no studying to do feels great. Now all I have to do over the break is grade lowly 1L's memos and finish my bar application.

One more semester of this bullshit.

My buddy's in law school and all he does is play video games, just like he did in high school and college. He has said that the impetus behind his motivation is that it's nearly impossible to fail out of grad school.

campbell, george mason, south carolina, i was going to throw together (finish) apps for NCCU and App Law School, but now that I've gotten in at one my level of care has plummeted. though i probably should have shot for the moon and applied to UNC (almost guaranteed of not getting in there though)

i didn't want to go to far so i limited myself to Va, NC, and SC on purpose.

I'll be taking the patent bar exam sometime this winter.

it is definitely hard to fail out of UNC law...

you pretty much have to write complete nonsense on an exam. Any inkling that you know something about the topic and you are going to land a C

Let me know if law school prep doesn't necessarily fit into this thread...that being said:

The LSAT Test Prep Workshop that NCSU's Office of Professional Development offers, is it worth the $640? Has anyone taken it? Did it boost your score dramatically? I'm trying to decide between taking a class/workshop like this or prepping as a one man wolfpack with a LSAT study guide or two.

^ I can't say anything about that program, because I didn't use that. I didn't think I needed any kind of prep, my pre-test scores were coming out fine. BUT I took a weekend prep course just to be on the safe side. I took PowerScore's class for $350. I just didn't see paying more than that for prep on a test.

Pros: It took 1 weekend, 16 instructional hours. The class was relatively small, which meant we could focus on particular problem areas. It came with all kinds of practices tests and a book, and online materials so I didn't need to buy anything else. All the instructors are people who have all scored in the 99th percentile. And if you score high enough, they'll refund your course money. And if you want extra you can take the class again at no cost. And you can use their online portal and free email assistance for the following year. It's really a lot of material.

Cons: We had several older "students" in our class who were coming back to take the LSAT, they slowed us down. I wish we could have moved at a faster pace, and skipped a bunch of the simple nonsense.

If you're wavering on whether or not you need to take a prep course, I wouldn't spend so much money on one through NCSU. But, that's just my opinion, based solely on cost, and that you can find a good program, cheaper. In all--If you are going to actively study on your own, and actively pursue different strategies and techniques, do it on your own. If you're going to keep putting it off and not actually practicing, I'd go with a course. That's my two cents at least . And at any rate, good luck!

After my first semester, I didn't even check my grades until months later. I would sometimes check my grades for the first time when I started cramming for the next semester's exams. I remember starting my 3L year and I had no idea what any of my grades were from my last semester, second year.

My friends would be like, "Aren't you worried you didn't pass??" To which I replied, "I think they would have let me know by now if I had failed something...but thanks for worrying." No matter how bad or how good I thought I did...I still managed to get average grades...and I managed to avoid freaking out every semester. Twas nice.

I haven't gotten a single grade back, and classes start on Monday. One of my classes was a paper turn in on November 9 and a presentation a week later, and there were only 20 people in the class. There's NO reason why that grade has not been submitted yet.
