last time i checked they were named the Carolina Hurricanes, and the same goes for the Panthers. believe me Charlotte people aren't jealous of anything of Raleigh. it's a great city, but has some morons on the City Council. a friend of mine that lives in Raleigh, but grew up in Miami, came down to see Charlotte during the break. i showed him around uptown, and many other areas of Charlotte. while not blown away (he did live in Miami) he was like, "wow this is much better than Raleigh." he said it reminded him a lot of Atlanta. which i somewhat agree with. i hate the fact that this is not getting as much press down there, but that doesn't mean that there isn't anyone watching it in Charlotte. i know of at least 5 people (father, mother, brother, sister-in-law, niece) that have been keeping up with the Stanley Cup run.

Charlotte sucks.

Plain and simple.

South Charlotte alone makes the case for domestic usage of nuclear weapons.

Yeah, because there are no bandwagoneers in Charlotte....Panthers games always sellout, there was never a situation where all of the Panthers games were blacked out on local TV because no one was buying tickets, right?

i could care less about where the players are from. i was stating that both the Panthers and the Canes are here to be rooted for by anyone for the Carolinas.

And the only reason they are such is due to marketing.

We are the Carolina Hurricanes because Raleigh-Durham-Cary-Chapel Hill-Triangle Hurricanes was too long. They're pretty much the Raleigh Hurricanes though, regardless of the naming convention of choice. The Carolina Panthers are pretty much the Charlotte Panthers. If a team named Carolina was located in Charleston or Greenville-Spartansburg, it's not like you should cheer for them cause they're supposedly the local team.

Although according to the NFL, everyone in eastern NC should have automatically switched from the Redskins to the Panthers after their expansion for some reason. Can I ask why when we're closer to D.C. than Charlotte? Washington is as local to me as Charlotte is. (disclaimer: I'm a Broncos fan and not a fan of either)

i think pro teams are only city based when there are more than one in the same sport in the same state. like the NY teams and such. of course in hockey you have the dallas stars so maybe there they think of the team as solely representing dallas. personally i'm a huge panthers fan and hurricanes fan and i think of both teams as carolina teams and not a raleigh team and a charlotte team. but maybe its just a matter of opinion

^^^ he was talking about EASTERN NC ...

and there are several parts for eastern NC that are 4-5 hours away from DC, while being 5-6 hours away from charlotte

^^ dallas also houses the Texas Rangers, which exist alongside the Houston Astros

Frm Rocky Mount I can make Charlotte in ~3 to 3.5 hours depending on stops, DC is a good 4.5 hours away, and Rocky Mount is right on I-95. Charlotte is closer really no matter how you cut it unless you live in like Roanoke Rapids or Elizabeth city or something, and be honest, no one lives there

i work in the suites over at the rbc and they almost made us work the away game saturday. i can't think of many suite holders who would want to spend a ton of money to have their guests watch the game on the jumbotron. needless to say they called it off today due to a lack of interest. (the suites i mean, not the entire thing)

Im from charlotte and go to state, and it really is frustrating to see how charlotte didnt give a shit about the canes until they made it all the way to the cup. I don't really get what the hatred is between Charlotte and Raleigh. I have grown to love both cities, am a die hard panthers and canes fan. I'll agree charlotte does need to get over its ego. but bombing south charlotte... I myself am from south charlotte and completely disagree with that statement. cant we all just enjoy our hurricanes on the way to winning the damn cup... im sure all of you loved the panthers when they almost won the superbowl a few years ago. but lets cut this shit talking about cities.

i dont think most of charlotte cares even with them in the cup finals. i keep waiting for the fairweather nature of nc fans to kick in and the businesses to try to make a buck off the situation, cause i'd kinda like to get a t-shirt or somethin. but good luck findin anything in charlotte. i saw one overpriced t-shirt in a store at carolina place mall, and that was it.

If you've listen to the Packmans show at all the last 2 weeks or so you'll know the people in charlotte dont give a rip about the Canes. Now I don't know if that's really the case with the majority of the city or just the dumbasses calling into this show. But I will say, growing up in Eastern NC and being a Skins fans since birth, I don't give a rip about the "Charlotte" Panthers, and will never care about them regardless how much they win. I think most of these clowns that have been calling in are just the bitter fans that have heard NC Redskins fans from the east trashing the panthers the last few years and are just trying to get even.

^^i'm gonna be honest, that theory sounds like its grasping at straws. i think the problem is hockey isnt really a southern sport, so its a lot harder to jump on a bandwagon for a sport you arent really familiar with than one you are. just cause the canes are doing well doesnt mean people in charlotte are suddenly going to take to a sport they know very little about just cause they play their home games 200 miles away. people in raleigh were more likely to hop onboard with the panthers in the early days cause they know football and they want a home team to root for. people that dont really care about hockey and arent really kept aware of the canes dont really care if they have a home team to root for with a sport they dont much care about...so it doesnt really go both ways in this case.

obviously i'm speaking in generalities, as there are scores of people that do care about hockey and the canes in the charlotte area.

^long story short, it takes time. They just have to get out and be visible in the off season after they win this shit.

[Edited on June 8, 2006 at 7:25 PM. Reason : ALso, ticket prices are an issue. $20 is what I would want to spend on a normal game.]

^tough shit, $20 is not what the going market price is for pro hockey

i would have liked to pay $10 to go see the US open in pinehurst, and $5 to sit in the bleachers for a St. Louis cardinals game, and $30 to go to the FSU/Miami game next year, but in reality i paid 40 bones to go to the US open, about $20 bucks for the outfield cardinals tickets, and $80 bills for the FSU/Canes game next year in Miami.

there are economic forces that set ticket prices, not what you as an individual fan "would want to pay"

i can't wait until raleigh gets just a little bigger, and that growth is happening as we speak, and all the ticket price whiners on here will no longer be listened to, because nobody will give a fuck what you think, because the rest of us will be enjoying the game...fortunately for you at this time, raleigh is on the cusp of being able to be a "pro-sports" type market, and people still think that they have a voice, and that their opinion of ticket prices really matters

exactly. unless you've got a sport that a lot of people are really excited about (exception: bobcats, who are still fighting the hornets stigma), it just takes time, and that increases the farther away you get from the home market.

as well as team budgeting, size of market, games per season, success of team, and plenty of other supply and demand factors to reach an equilibrium

but thanks for the economics lesson

the fact is, one young college student, young alumni and what he will pay does not set a market, but if you think that your random assesment that a canes game is worth $20 should set the market for Raleigh, NC, then you have a large ego

The fact of the matter is that they aren't selling out games. They could make more money and sell out games by offering cheaper tickets for seats that aren't selling out.

It's not hard to understand.

Canes sold 200+ $280 SRO tickets last night...which is funny because I saw dozens of empty seats in the club level and more than a couple upstairs, including my unsold season seat that I sat in, even though my ticket was in 331.

you just showed your stupidity with this one, don't even feel like i need to argue, eleusis pretty much said it all in his post, and edit

if your reasoning was correct, then why do first class seats stay open, when the rest of a flight is packed

First-class doesn't sell out? Prove it. You picked the worst industry as an example, since airlines put a lot of effort into price discrimination in order to fill planes and maximize profits. Two people sitting next to each other easily could have paid a different price. You do know why some airlines have both first and business classes, don't you?

In fact, this is exactly what I am saying the canes should do. Thank you for brining up the airlines example. If the canes can't currently create a finer pricing gradient, they should work out the details to do so.

well all i know is that during the regular season they were discouting tickets i believe if you were a college student to where it'd be around $12. that's pretty darn cheap, even if it is in the end area of the upper deck.

I don't know where any of you idiots get off saying that eastern north carolina is closer to washington dirty ass DC than it is charlotte. I live in freaking Wilmington as far to the right as you can get and I am a panthers fan. I've always hated the DEADSKINS and the only reason why any of you liked them or were "raised" as a fan of them was how much they were stinking winning so get over that fast. second off where is all this hatred on charlotte coming from? Wilmington, Raleigh, and Charlotte are the three best cities in my opinion in NC.... youve got the capital, nc state, meredith girls, a good scene and sports in raleigh, in wilmington you got the dub, pretty girls, a great party scene and the beach, and in charlotte you have a great big city feel but right outside of it it feels small town, the panthers, bobcats, and a GREAT nightlife...all three are about 2.5 hours from each other. So stop with that shit and get back to us winning it here GAME 5. shit.

this statement is flawed, until you prove with some academic support that this is a a certainty, you are wrong

also, answer this; why has no professional sports team even tried to implement this type of system if the idea is so fucking brilliant???
