@ Golovko:

On Apple's international stores site, the iPhone is available in the US, UK, Germany, and France. That agrees with wikipedia's listing as well. So while you can talk all you want about it being "available internationally on pretty much every continent" and make a distinction about being sold through a service provider vs through an electronics shop, you still made your original comments in response to someone saying they're fetching a premium on ebay b/c of international buyers. All the electronics shops on pretty much every continent must be obtaining them through second-hand sources like, say, eBay or other means, so you pretty much made FanatiK's point for him.

^^We know where the apple is and isn't available through service providers. But let me explain to you how the market works for electronics in countries you've probably never even heard of let alone able to find them on the map. Store owners go to the countries you've listed and buy the latest and greatest phones they can find every where and bring them back to their little stores and sell them for a profit. I have plenty of 1st hand info on people I know that have walked into stores in various locations across the middle east and purchased brand new iPhones.

Thanks for playing though...let me make a wiki page real quick so you can STFU

@ebay. International buyers from eBay are individuals not stores.

yeah and there's no markup or anything that might drive people to ebay to possibly get one cheaper than in some store in addis ababa.

It's probably on par with the markup to convince people to ship it to random third world countries.

^exactly. What kind of astronomical price do you think they'd sell the iPhone for in their stores if their cost was ebay pricing??? thats the most retarded business plan I've ever heard. I know of people that have been doing this for years long before there was an iPhone. You can actually buy these phones for the same price if not less than ebay because you can negotiate with them. I've bought phones in the past like this by selling them my current phone for ~$200 depending on the model and buying the latest and greatest at a discount.

can't wait for more fanatik bullshit....

A trip just to visit your relatives who somehow cover ALL of Asia would probably take the rest of my life.

And not that it's really relevant in any way, but I guarantee I've seen more of the world than you.

well, considering you know nothing about me, I'm relieved to get downgraded to "highly doubtable" status.

Just goes to show how really full of it you are.

Here's an idea: if you don't know what you're talking about, just keep your mouth shut. This applies to everything.

and, uh, yeah:

not to distract from the argument or anything, but I am thinking of getting an iphone but am not sure how well AT&T will work in my house. What are my options? I dont want to go drop 400 on an iphone only to find out that the service isn't great here considering the 10% restocking fee.

Any suggestions? (or does someone with an iphone want to drop by my house and see how your service is?)

just find somebody you know with at&t, iphone reception is comparable to just about any other phone so that'll work fine to gauge coverage.

As far as AT&T, don't you have a 14 day trial period that you can cancel with no penalty at any time? also i wasn't aware there was a 10% restock on returned iphones.

I understand how the market works; I've travelled a fair amount myself and have lived outside of the US for an extended period of time, and you're not the only one with friends who currently live in the Middle East and Asia. But the point still stands that your original response and subsequent rants to FanatiK were irretrievably dumb, because you're kidding yourself if you think international buyers don't have an impact on ebay prices. People who buy the latest and greatest in consumer electronics are technologically savvy, forward-thinking people, and people who make a living buying and reselling on ebay know what they're doing and how to handle international transactions without getting duped. If someone in the Middle East could get an iPhone significantly cheaper from eBay than from their local electronics retailer who either bought online himself or made a trip to Germany to load up stock, then they would do so; there's a market equilibrium playing itself out here, where the shop owners know how much profit they can make on their international shopping trips without losing too much business, and the professional ebayers are also competing to take business from those same people. Some shop owners will continue to make their trips to Europe, and others will settle for the convenience of buying online and then reselling for less profit.

But if Apple is limiting sales in Europe just like they are in the US (I'll concede I don't know if they are or not, but it would be reasonable of them to do so, given supply/demand), then buying online from a host of second-hand vendors is suddenly a much more appealing option to those foreign shop owners, and then international buyers have even more of an effect on ebay prices.

i don't think that has anything to do with the iphone...thats how nomad works. normally you can register your mac address with itd or whoever (online), maybe you can do the same thing with your iphone. http://nomad.ncsu.edu/index.html

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/2008-01-22-skyhook_N.htm

good article on Skyhook today in USAtoday, seems the iPhone looks for Wifi first, then uses cell towers

Quote :
"Morgan explained how the technology works: "Every Wi-Fi access point, whether public or private, sends out a signal every second or so, like a lighthouse. We pick up those signals and use our technology to calculate your exact location."

What Skyhook does not do, Skyhook Vice President Shean says, is connect to those Wi-Fi networks. "We're detecting, not connecting."

To get the system up and running, Skyhook sent teams of drivers around the USA and Canada to map out hot spots; it now has 70% of North America covered. Skyhook vehicles now are cruising Europe and Asia to add to the database.

...

Apple uses both Skyhook and Google technology on the iPhone. It looks for Wi-Fi signals first, and if there are none, it switches to Google's cell-tower information."

apple reports it's "best ever quarter" in terms of profits:

http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/01/22/Record-iPhone-Mac-sales-boost-Apples-earnings_1.html

Quote :
"Apple recorded net revenue for its first fiscal quarter, ended Dec. 29, of $9.6 billion, a 35 percent year-over-year increase, beating estimates of $9.47 billion from analysts polled by Thomson Financial.

The company posted quarterly net profit of $1.58 billion, an increase from the $1 billion net profit from the year-earlier quarter. The company recorded earnings of $1.76 per share.

Unit shipments of the iPod were 22.1 million units, a 5 percent growth over the year-earlier period. Apple sold 2.3 million iPhones during the quarter, a sequential increase from the 1.12 million iPhones it shipped in its fourth fiscal quarter. Apple shipped 2.3 million Macintosh computers, a 44 percent growth from the year-earlier quarter.

Sales of the iPhone will continue to grow as the product enters Asia and other European countries in 2008, said Tim Cook, Apple's chief operating officer, during a conference call to discuss the results. "We remain confident on hitting the 10 million goal for 2008," he said. "
