id prefer favors

he suits our style a lot better in my opinion. Kelly just seems to raw, he's good dont get me wrong..but Favors is more polished and I think Sid could really work with the kid.

he's got a lot of potential too tho, i mean he's just a dern high schooler.

id rather have favors.

on the flip side, kelly is a 3 or 4 year player, probably, while favors is a guaranteed one and done.

i still think you take favors, i think lowe's doing a good enough job recruiting for the future that you can take the better player and expect to get a replacement in a year or two.

although realistically, either one would be great.

interestingly though, they're still actively recruiting both, along w/ a few other guys. they seemingly expect to be able to take five this class, which is not one but two over our scholarship limit. where are those coming from? johnny thomas and...?

Scott Wood is really tearing it up in AAU national play. This is from Bob Gibbons:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=3511224

Quote :
"ORLANDO -- Bracket play began Tuesday at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex for the teams still in the playoffs of the AAU Junior Boys' National Championship Tournament, and there were some shockers. The biggest surprise was the SYF Players (Ind.) upsetting one of the tournament favorites, Houston Hoops, 94-82. N.C. State commitment 6-foot-5 second guard Scott Wood (Marion, Ind.) put on an amazing shooting performance, hitting six of eight 3-point point attempts and 15-of-16 free throws for a tournament-high 39 points to lead SYF to the win. N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe has to be feeling great right now, getting recent commitments from top-rated players Lorenzo Brown and Richard Howell, and then seeing Wood, his earliest 2009 recruit, shoot the lights out here. ^^most likely Brandon Costner.

I would much prefer us to hit up Favors harder than Kelly. He would provide us the body downlow that we will need drastically and I see him fitting in better with the team style than Kelly does. We already have enough finese players we need more bangers.

a little insight to Lowe's connection with the Georgia kids

Quote :
"For Lowe, Georgia's always on his mind
By Jim Young
Staff Writer
Wednesday, July 30
updated 8:43 am

Sidney Lowe may still be relatively new to the college basketball recruiting scene, but he's already learned this important axiom:

Relationships trump geography.

N.C. State got two more examples this week when guard Lorenzo Brown and power forward Richard Howell, highly regarded recruits in the class of 2009, committed to the Wolfpack.

Brown (Roswell, Ga.) and Howell (Marietta, Ga.) became the latest Atlanta-area recruits to pick N.C. State, joining J.J. Hickson and Class of 2010 point guard Ryan Harrow (Marietta, Ga.). Clearly, Lowe and his staff have created a pipeline of hoops talent that's running from Georgia to Raleigh.

How did it happen? Relationships.

Strangely enough, the first relationship was forged in Vancouver in 2000. At the time, Lowe was in his first season coaching the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies, and his star player was Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

Fast forward seven years, to 2007. The Wolfpack is vying for the services of J.J. Hickson. A key influence in Hickson's decision was his fellow Wheeler High School (Marietta, Ga.) alum &ellipses; Abdur-Rahim. Hickson played on Abdur-Rahim's AAU squad, a group originally called Team Reef but later renamed Worldwide Renegades.

"We were familiar with Sidney Lowe for years, even though he wasn't in college," said Desmond Eastmond, the director of Worldwide Renegades.

Abdur-Rahim was a power forward who had enjoyed a strong season in Lowe's offense. Hickson and those around him were convinced the same thing could happen at N.C. State.

"With a point guard or a power forward, you can't go wrong with Sidney Lowe," Eastmond said.

One year later, Hickson was a first-round pick in the NBA draft (19th overall, by Cleveland) and an enthusiastic endorser of Lowe and the Wolfpack to his younger hoops-playing friends back in Georgia.

"That opened up a lot of relationships," said Justin Young, national recruiting analyst for Rivals.com.

It opened the eyes of Brown, a smooth 6-foot-4 athlete who could be used as a shooting guard (Scout.com rates him No. 8 at that position in the Class of 2009) or as a point guard (Rivals.com rates him No. 9 at that position).

Brown confirmed Sunday what has been an open secret for weeks when he committed to the Wolfpack. According to Scout.com recruiting analyst Evan Daniels, Brown had discussed his plans to go to State with Howell, his friend and occasional teammate with the Worldwide Renegades. A day after Brown publicly picked the Wolfpack, Howell, a 6-8 forward (No. 59 Rivals, No. 74 Scout) with a face-up game who has come on strong recently on the AAU circuit, followed suit.

"Obviously with these kids, they talk," Daniels said. "When looking at college situations, it's always cool to go to a place where you might have friend there."

They talk to others in the Atlanta area as well. Harrow, a Class of 2010 commitment, doesn't play for the Worldwide Renegades. But he does know Brown, who has split his AAU time between Worldwide Renegades and Harrow's team, Louis Williams Elite.

More relationships, more commitments for N.C. State.

The Wolfpack next hopes to use its Atlanta-area ties to reel in power forward Derrick Favors, considered by many to be the top recruit in the Class of 2009. Beating out Georgia and Georgia Tech may be too tall an order, but even without Favors, State has established itself as a serious player in Atlanta. Right now, that's a very good place to be.

"It's probably one of the top hoops areas," Daniels said. "The past few years, I think Georgia has been one of, if not the best, places for producing top-level talent.""

I've heard praise for Leslie on his shot blocking ability which some attribute to his length, and I've seen it in a few highlight vids. Having seen him in person, did you notice anything along these lines? Did his length help him block or alter any shots? Some compare him physically to a Kevin Durant. He's not on Durant's talent level, but he is supposedly very agile even though he is quite tall. Based on what limited film I'd have to somewhat agree, but I've also never seen him in person. Is he every bit of the 6'8" that he's listed at?

More on Wood:

Quote :
"There hasn't been too many players in Orlando better than Scott Wood at scoring the ball. On Thursday morning, the future N.C. State guard pumped in 36 points in a SYF overtime win over All Ohio Red."

http://ncstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=832469

I know it would defy everything NC State, but does anybody think Wood gets a bump up in the rankings? From everything I've seen, he's been the best offensive player in the AAU national tourney.

Yeah that guy was a little annoying, but you kind of get an idea of what Scott Wood sounds like and what you'll be hearing when he's being interviewed. At least we know he can dunk.

I posted this highlight vid of Wood sometime in this thread, but I'm gonna post it again for those that might not have seen it yet. I don't think he'll have any trouble with the 3pt line being moved back a foot. He seems to be able to hit it from pretty far behind the old line already.

he is very long, in fact that is the first thing you notice. also he handles the ball great for a guy his height, at times he was running "point" for his squad. i also wouldnt be suprised if he grew a couple of more inches before he steps on campus, and if he fills out at all he will be down right scary.

Apparently the connection to Clifton/Wall was Baylor assistant coach Matt Driscoll who was on the Clemson staff when Dwon Clifton played at the University of Clemson. Dwon grew up in High Point, NC and he was recruited by NC State’s former coach Herb Sendek. In the end, Sendek did not offer him a scholarship. After a couple of years at Clemson, Dwon transfered to UNC-G and only had a marginal impact at either program."

That's what I was thinking... he is too talented to simply "back off" on unless there were some other things about him we aren't hearing. You can't rely on what a talent like Favors will do regardless of what he might say...

As far as trusting the coaching staff... I'm thrilled with the get of guys like Leslie and Brown, but I don't have any real strong reason, as of yet, to trust them...

I hope you're right though, JT3. Favors would be, obviously, the biggest prize of the recruiting year.

This seems like wild speculation to me. So you're saying that because he's had a couple of mediocre performances in the past week or two that we stopped recruiting him?? Maybe you have some kind of inside information that lead you to believe this or maybe you're just making connections between things that are totally unrelated without any kid of evidence. Kelly said that he was really interested in the academics of the school he will commit to, and we are as simonn said the least impressive of those schools academically. It seems a lot more likely that we got cut because of that than because we stopped showing interest.

Pack is tapping Georgia talent
Lowe is developing a pipeline into fertile basketball recruiting area

When Sidney Lowe became N.C. State's basketball coach just more than two years ago, fans had visions of tapping the fertile Washington, D.C., recruiting market for players.
Lowe and staff members Pete Strickland and Quentin Jackson all are graduates of coach Morgan Wootten's prestigious DeMatha High program in D.C. It seemed natural that Lowe would recruit successfully there.

Instead, the Atlanta area has become the focal point of N.C. State's out-of-state recruiting with the help of other Lowe connections. J.J. Hickson, N.C. State's leading scorer and rebounder last season as a freshman before leaving as the NBA's 19th overall draft pick for the Cleveland Cavaliers, played at Wheeler High in Marietta, Ga.

So does Richard Howell, a 6-foot-8 rising senior forward who committed to N.C. State last week. One of Wheeler's greatest basketball alumni, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, played for Lowe with the Vancouver Grizzlies in the NBA.

"Obviously they've laid a lot of groundwork there from the start of things with J.J. Hickson," said scout.com national recruiting analyst Dave Telep.

"There's a tie there I think from Coach Lowe with Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who lives there and knows a lot of those guys, and now J.J. It's become a nice little pipeline because that's a state that's been loaded with talent."

Before Lowe, N.C. State hadn't had much recent success in Georgia. From 1997-98 to 2006-07, the only player on any N.C. State roster who came from a Georgia hometown was Josh Powell of Riverdale.

Hickson, a McDonald's All- American, gave Lowe and N.C. State an immediate, high-profile presence in Georgia. Howell said he didn't talk to Hickson before choosing the Wolfpack, but he noticed Hickson's success.

"It had a little bit of an impact," Howell said. "I saw their games on TV. I saw the games he played."

Lorenzo Brown of Roswell, Ga., a teammate of Howell's on the Worldwide Renegades AAU team, also committed to N.C. State last week. Brown is a 6-5 guard rated 29th nationally in the rising senior class by scout.com.

One of Brown's best friends, rising junior point guard Ryan Harrow of Marietta's Walton High, committed to N.C. State last month. That gives Lowe four Georgia commitments in four recruiting classes.

Harrow's high school coach, Joe Goydish, said Lowe is getting into a good area because the talent in Georgia is outstanding. Goydish said AAU coaches in Georgia are focusing more on fundamentals than in the past, so players are getting better year-round training.

Goydish said the emergence of teams such as the Worldwide Renegades have given Georgia players more quality AAU options in a state where the Atlanta Celtics and Georgia Stars already had strong, established programs.

Eight of scout.com's top 100 rising senior prospects are from Georgia. So even though Lowe hasn't gained a commitment yet from a player in the D.C. area, building relationships in Georgia could help him build a strong program.

"You go where you can get guys," Telep said. "You go where people want to help you. If help is coming from the Metro Atlanta area, that's where you go."

We get it people. Kelly LIKELY cooled on us, not vice versa. If academics are what he's basing his list on, then we can't really hold a candle to ND, Vandy, Gtown, Duke, Wake, and (gulp) UNC -- at least on a prestige level. Not saying NC State is a slouch, just we're not on that level.

Here's a recruiting blurb about Scott Wood that was interesting, even though they got his name wrong:

http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7011833610

Quote :
"Recruiting analyst Bob Gibbons is impressed with Lowe's recruits, including 6-foot-5 guard Sean Wood of Marion, IN.

"Right now, Sean is shooting the ball better than (former Duke star, now NBA player) J.J. Reddick did in high school," Gibbons told the Raleigh News & Observer.

If academics where the reason, why is Kelly now down to Notre Dame, UNC, and Georgetown? Why not Vanderbilt or Stanford?

Oh, that's because he isn't all about academics.
