Photo gallery of the efforts being done to find and catalog some of NC State's athletics history. It's cool to see that Donald Bowens is involed in the process. Hopefully they can convert some of that old film footage to digital versions.

^Thanks Chief

I'm going to start getting together a tailgating playlist together tonight. I welcome any recommendations.

the idea came to me when the Red and White song came on my ipod yesterday at the gym. I swear it was like hearing "We will rock you" at Jellybeans when i was a kid, gave me super-human strength.

its got to be just me, but i THINK the media doesn't want us to have two qbs, or a good PG or anything that would generally make us successful; why all the hate? Why keep asking Glennon if he's going to transfer. Why ask CJ Leslie if he's "too big for NCSU"?

Southern Pigskin (go ahead and hate, but I'm starved for any kind of football coverage this summer) picked us 3rd in the Atlantic:
Quote :
"3. NC State – Entering his third season with the Wolfpack, head coach Tom O’Brien may finally have a team that represents his efficient style. With quarterback Russell Wilson managing the offense and a disciplined, athletic defense, O’Brien will have NC State playing his trademark brand of football. If Wilson can stay healthy, this may be the year the ‘Pack compete.

Without a doubt, Wilson is the team catalyst. In games in which he was injured last season, offensive production dropped considerably. After throwing 17 touchdowns and just one interception in 2008, he is without question the premier signal caller in the ACC. Wilson puts a nice touch on deep passes and seems to have a calm command of the offense at all times. He extends plays effortlessly and is a noted improviser. In addition to being a polished passer, Wilson is a running threat as well. He compiled nearly 400 yards on the ground a year ago and ran for four touchdowns. His versatility gives the Wolfpack a number of options on third down. Just a sophomore, he has a lot of pressure on his shoulders. As a freshman, Wilson played with a maturity far beyond his years. He will have one of the league’s best group of wide receivers aiding his cause. Junior Owen Spencer was third in the nation last season, averaging 22.3 yards per reception. He is a favorite for All-ACC honors. Fellow junior Jarvis Williams returns after 26 receptions a year ago. Freshman T.J. Graham is an undersized, quick receiver who excels in the slot role. NC State will place a high emphasis on running the football and seniors Jamelle Eugene and Toney Baker are two capable tailbacks. Three starters return along the offensive line, with senior Ted Larson leading the way up front. State could see considerable improvement along the offensive front.

The NC State front seven looks especially intimidating. Expect the run defense and the sack totals to improve with tackle Alan-Michael Cash and end Willie Young returning on the defensive line. Both players have All-ACC talent. Young has 28 tackles for the loss the past two seasons and could emerge as the premier pass rusher in the ACC in his senior season. At 6’4’’, 250 with a chiseled frame and very good athleticism, NFL scouts will be eying his productivity this fall. The enforcer for the Wolfpack on defense is junior linebacker Nate Irving. He battled injuries last season, but still managed eleven tackles for loss and a team-high four interceptions. He is a dynamic talent at linebacker, with the speed and athleticism to excel in coverage and the strength and technique to push through the line of scrimmage. If he can stay healthy for an entire season, Irving will become a national name. NC State had the league’s worst passing defense in 2008, allowing nearly 250 yards through the air per game. Cornerback DeAndre Morgan had a promising sophomore season and may be emerging as the go-to defender in the secondary. Expectations are high for sophomore corner Dominique Ellis. There isn’t much depth after those two. True freshman Jarvis Byrd, from Florida powerhouse Pahokee, will likely compete for playing time right away. Playmakers are needed at safety where the coaches will be relying on senior Clem Johnson for a big year.

Kicker John Czajkowski had a fantastic season in ’08, converting on 16 of 19 field goal attempts. Freshman Chris Ward will be taking over at punter. T.J. Graham, the aforementioned slot receiver, is one of the best return men in the conference.

Final Thought – Wilson is being touted as the leader this program needs to contend for a conference championship. He certainly has the talent, but is just a sophomore. It remains to be seen whether this team will have the confidence and poise needed to consistently step up big in big moments.

Offensive MVP – Russell Wilson, QB
Defensive MVP – Willie Young, DE
Rising Star – T.J. Graham, WR/KR
Newcomer to Watch – Jarvis Byrd, CB
Key Game – at Wake Forest, October 3rd"

Oversight not mentioning Bowens in the WR preview

and I wish Owen Spencer spelled his name Owenn

Jerramy Stevens ( Jerramy with 2 'R's in case he drops one) was one of my favorite jokes

I guess so, but he's still recovering from a knee surgery and the whole fractured spine thing. Supposedly he's not going to be ready for the opener, so expecting him to be a major contributor seems like a stretch at this point in time.

Bowens would be welcomed, but we're fine at WR. Don't forget Jay Smith along with the afforementioned three.

I think a bigger oversight was not mentioning Glennon.

he has been out for more than a year now and his availability this season is still a question mark. i think it's fair to leave him out a short season preview. even if he comes back in, say October, who knows how effective he'll be and where he'd be on the depth chart.

I agree with them here, even though we have bigger fish to fry later in the season

With out first 4 games at home and game 6 at home vs Duke, this could very well be our biggest obstacle to a 5-1 or better start and a National Ranking going into the second half of the year

Yeah it's crazy to think how we can be if all of the pieces of our football team come together prior to the SC game!

if our secondary defense can step up their game defense, anything is possible in 09-10!

HD rated Willie Young as the 9th best player in the ACC:
Quote :
"No. 9. Willie Young, DE, NC State, Sr., 6-4, 250

Young
Why he's here: Because he ranks first in career tackles for loss, first in sacks, and fourth in tackles among active players in the ACC (at least until Mark Herzlich comes back). The fifth-year senior is the most experienced player on the entire roster (1,667 snaps), and could be one of the top pass rushers in the ACC this fall. Young ranks 11th in school history with 31.5 career tackles for loss, and his 12.5 career sacks rank 15th in schools history. Young led the team with 26 quarterback pressures last year and made 54 tackles.

Young decided to return to Raleigh for a fifth season instead of entering the NFL draft, so he's going to be working to improve his draft stock, and that in turn will improve the Wolfpack. (Young was projected a second-round pick in the 2009 NFL draft). Tom O'Brien told the Charlotte Observer that "Willie Young coming back was the best recruit we had." Young led last year's team in tackles for loss (12.5) and sacks (6.5)."

I concur, and it's making the next 2+ months absolutely unbearable...

As I've said many times before, State's in the same position UNC was last year - having a much improved team in a weak conference with a favorable schedule. UNC had its shot, but went 8-4... losing 4 games by 3 or less points. State's got the same chance this year, and honestly I could see anything from 7-5 to 11-1 and an Orange Bowl bid.

In other news... ranking Clemson ahead of us is a stretch IMHO. For pete sake they went 7-6 last year (w/ 2 D-1AA wins), have a new head coach, and have a true freshman from the baseball team leading the race for starting QB...

OK... bad example there considering how well it worked for us. But in Wilson's defense he was a redshirt freshman

I think you guys are viewing the Dinich issue in the wrong light. It's not a matter of whether she's cute or not. It's a matter of would you or wouldn't you because in the end, that's all that really matters. This is where the binary system comes in handy. 1 you would and 0 you wouldn't.

I'm gonna go with a 1

If Dwyer isn't #1, I'll be shocked. GT's Morgan Burnett (Safety - tied for National lead in INT's last season) will also be a top 5 player.

Not sure if any of the other players in GT's backfield will make the list, but those dudes are fucking loaded at the A and B back positions.

Looking at the players up until WY I see she has not 1 but 2 UNC linebackers ranked ahead of Nate Irving. She has to be going directly off of stats for that to be the case since NI missed time because of injuries.

I can see Quan Sturdivant being up there but Bruce Carter.... please

How about Javon Walker at safety? The media seems to completely forgotten about him. He's in the same boat as Bowens, being out for a year with injuries, but he performed well when he was on the field in '07. I'm looking forward to his return.

^^ Sturdivant is definitely the best linebacker they have

A little stat comparison shows that Sturdivant led UNC in tackles with 122 (87 solo) while Carter had 68 (49 solo). Sturdivant also had 2 ints and 1 FF to Carter's 1 int and 0 FF. Carter did have 5 sacks to Sturdivant's 2, but most of the time MLB's don't blitz anyway.

I've always thought Sturdivant was the steadier player, but Carter is a bigger playmaker. He's like Terrance Holt when it comes to punt blocks.

They're both really good players, but neither are on Nate's level.

^^Pretty sure Paschal was UNC's MLB last year (too lazy to look up). Sturdivant was on the weakside IIRC and Carter was at the SLB. I'm surprised Carter didn't have more than 5 sacks honestly ... dude is nasty off the edge. Even got Russell one time last year.

and to call me a homer when you have RW as the #1? come on dude - yeah he's the best QB in the ACC, but that's not like saying he's the best QB in the Big XII.

You could very well be right

I have a few memories of QS making plays for the little bit of tarhole football I did watch last year but, to be honest, I try to stay as far away from tarhole football as possible so I wouldn't know for sure.

Yea, I'm a little surprised that Jimmaul Simmons has been left out of a lot of the safety talk too. At 5'9 211 lbs, I think having Bobby Floyd getting playing time is a big weakness, I definitely can't see him matching up man to man against a tight end and I see him getting taken advantage of often in a 2 deep set. Same with Justin Byers. Byers had some pretty good plays last year but he's just small. If Simmons developed much at all over last year I'd be surprised to not see him competing for playing time with his size.
