no she's trying to say the big boss would be pissed -- even though the office in Havelock has everything this one does!!! it's so fucking ridiculous... I would have access to termserv, faxing, scanning, etc, and can take whatever I don't finish on Thursday with me on Friday!

I was just planning on using my lunch break to go... so I would be in that office for like 7-8 hours still!

There are no rules as a customer rather than you pay for your food. Tipping, regardless if you choose to acknowledge it or not, is optional. sure most people tip, but they are by no means obligated to do so. waiters and waitresses have formed a sense of entitlement regarding tips that is evident in your posts. I have had countless friends in the service industry, some who I know give shitty service some times but never have I heard them say "i was tipped poorly, but its okay because my service sucked". waiters and waitresses never admit they were potentially the problem in the low tip.

you're not even trying to put forth honest discourse. there are servers in plenty of countries that don't tip. Europe has a mixture of good and bad service, but no shortage of serving staff. In Japan it is insulting to tip because waiters see it as a matter of honor to serve the customer well.

Exactly. I was born in 1984 and tipping was 13% for a good tip when I was coming along. Food has increased in cost so cost of living doesn't explain the increased percentage in tipping. furthermore the job has gotten easier in many ways since servers have better tools around to manage their tables and get orders done correctly. the expectation of the 20% automatic tip once again reflects the entitlement culture. I tip between 15 and 18% for typical service (which honestly is rarely that good), well below if expectations are not met, and well above that when I encounter service I find exemplary. Its not being cheap it is doing what tipping is intended to do. Making it a system of meritocracy where good service is rewarded and bad service discouraged therefore inspiring some to provide better service and discouraging those who cannot seem to do so from being in the industry at all.


simply, maybe you didn't provide good service. maybe you treated them worse than normal because they were black and you assumed you were going to get a low tip anyways (self fulfilling prophecy). Either way, you are by no means entitled to 15% or over

paid more for more expensive- its because i am not simply an order taker, i am a sales person. i can very easily sell someone a cheap meal that will be fine and dandy, but i strive to help people truly please their palette with a combination of different things on our menu like an appetizer, a great salad, a bottle of wine, and an amazing entree followed by a dessert that will knock their socks off. i know everything about our menu, i do my best to help the customer get exactly what they want and need at all times while i am serving them. i dont just bring someone their food and walk away. i make the dining experience ideal, and for that, i deserve to be paid. its like buying a car from a person who works on commission. that commission is coming out of your pocket still in the price of the car, the more expensive the car, the more money they get because you paid more. if you walked in a picked out a POS car and weren't happy with it is probably because you didnt have the expert opinion of a car salesman to help you find exactly what oyu want and suggest things for you that you never considered you needed.

admitting i am the problem- i have fucked up while waiting plenty, and on those occasions i am ALWAYS the first to admit and apologize first to the customer, and then to my manager for having to deal with it. if they dont tip me because i messed up thats fine, but when i offer exceptional service i dont understand why my tip shouldn't follow suit

hourly wage- i generally make 15-20 an hour on a good night. no restaurant could ever afford to pay that. i dont know why the wages arent hourly. i cant explain that, but one of the reasons i am a server is because the money is generally good. you grow to expect the norm of an 18-20% tip. its not because i feel like servers always have deserved it, its just the way restaurants are from the get go. hence why we make $2.13 an hour which all goes to taxes. i honestly wish i could go in every day knowing i'll make guaranteed money, but i dont. on the other hand, i sometimes make more than i expect which is nice. it all ends up evening out in the long run, but i wish people understood where their server is coming from sometimes.

and i would never, ever, EVER treat someone differently because they are black. i treat all of my customers the same. with exceptional courtesy, the utmost respect, and give them everything that i would expect from dining experience to ensure that they are highly satisfied when they leave my table. i have been told numerous times by many many tables that i am the best server they have ever had and been given far far more than 20% on a lot of occasions for the same service i have given to people that gave me less than 10%. it just doesnt make sense. thats all i am saying. didnt mean to stir up a huge fight among tww.
