There are actually some hot heroin addicts around. My friend and I met one in Wilmington that was cool as hell. She had a job, was hot, no obvious signs of being a druggie. We were drinking one night and she passed out with no warning and pretty much stopped breathing, he had to call 911. The EMS woke her up and using that antidote shot they have, she broke down and told us what was up. We had hung out with her a bunch and had no idea.

It all made sense then. She had a job, but no car, and never had any extra money to pay for anything. She would never miss work, but was pretty much just working for drug money. He dated her for a while after that anyway (she's like 21 and he is 34). She never acted shady as far as like stealing or begging for money, and was definitely not busted at all like you picture drug addicts being. She was honestly way out of his league aside from being on drugs.

She got put out of her apartment and we helped her move to another one. Then those room mates put her out in less than a month so my friend just stopped answering the phone. He was not gonna let her move in and by that time he was tired of paying for everything and driving her everywhere too. I guess by then she was fucking up pretty bad. The last I heard she had moved to a different city and gotten clean. Wilmington is like a haven for heroin users, its everywhere.

It surprised me how well people can semi-function and be on heroin all the time. Aside from her being really drowsy at times you would never notice. You can be on it forever as long as you can afford to buy it no one will notice..then one day you take a tad bit too much, just stop breathing, and die.

since it's saying "opiod abusers" rather than "heroin addicts" I wonder if it has to do with military folk abusing prescription pain pills as a result of injury or PTSD. i.e. having a legit prescription at some point and then getting hooked, which I'm sure is a common story.

also, I would have thought South Carolina would be worse - particularly in the Myrtle Beach area.
