Based on the expectation that we go to the NCAA every year. At least for me I don't just hope for a ticket to the big dance, I expect it. Especially in a year where there are so many winnable conference games because the conference isn't that deep with talent. It's not like football where I expect half of the years to be down years and we barely scrape together a bowl-eligible season.

2/15/2015 12:01:17 PM

also.... NC State [14-11 (5-7), RPI: 61, SOS: 4] So close. On Feb. 3, NC State lost at Wake Forest, 88-84, and the only upside was the break to come. The Wolfpack had eight days to rest and prepare for No. 2 Virginia, a team they had played close in Charlottesville early in the season, -- and, as it turned out, a team suddenly without its All-American candidate shooting guard, Justin Anderson, due to injury. If ever there was a time to land a marquee February win, this was it. The Cavaliers struggled, sans Anderson, on the offensive end, but the Wolfpack just could not crack UVa's pack-line clinic defense, finishing with 47 points in 56 possessions in a four-point loss. At this point, good schedule stats and a win over Duke probably don't make up for the holes in this resume. Mark Gottfried's team might need to conjure something special at Louisville Saturday just to stay in the conversation.

we did that haha

^ interesting. as much as I'd like to believe that, I am about their take on the rest of the ACC teams:

*** IN ***
42 Miami FL 92.69%
44 Clemson 60.69%

*** THE BUBBLE BURSTS HERE ***
48 Pittsburgh 14.89%

Given how many tough games are ahead for all 4 of the ACC Bubble teams - and how often they play each other, there will be many more Losses piled up across the board than now even. So at least 2 if not 3 of these teams probably fall out by early March.

All of these tournament predictions don't mean anything to me unless they also factor in what we are supposed to do with the rest of the schedule.

For example if we still happen to be "last 4 in" when we play at UNC, lose as expected, and then end up back out, that's bullshit

It is likely based on if the season ended today speculation bullshit just like we all saw with the college football playoff. As far as I am concerned it basically means if you win the rest of your games you are in. So for now lets worry about not shutting the bed against VT.

I hope I am wrong but I see us going 2-3 down the stretch which isnt gonna get us in . We will lose to UNC and Syracuse and manage to fuck up either Clemson or BC.

I think we drop UNC and Syracuse to finish 9-9. I think with that we'd need an ACCT final run, unfortunately. That will be incredibly hard without a 6 seed or higher.

As always, we control our own destiny but will likely need help in the end. Hope BC, GT, and UVA help us out tonight.

UNC at home, the game after Dean Smith's public memorial service, is going to be a tough win. I think we *can* do it, but I see that being the only game we lose through the end of the season. Regardless of whether we win out, I think we need to make it to the ACCT Final to secure our chances. If we drop more than one, we need to earn the automatic bid.

i have absolutely no confidence in winning at unc. when we go to chapel hill we turn into the nba players from space jam after the monstars steal their talents. we just trip over our dicks most of the game.

i don't think we need a tourney run. last year we didn't even get a top 25 win until cuse in the acct quarters. home vs. duke and especially AT louisville will hold up our resume pretty well.

forget about UNC if we win the rest + 1 acct win to make 20 wins, you can pretty much punch our ticket to the round of 64. Even if we lay an egg at clemson, we could probably still slide in like we always do as a play-in at least.

so you're saying we could finish 5-0, win in the second round and quarterfinals of the ACCT (the latter against a top 4 seed) and would still need to win our semifinal matchup to make the tournament?

^^ Yes. I'm not as optimistic as you all seem to be in riding the high after the Louisville win. Plenty of other tough competition for the same spot, not only in the ACC, but outside of the ACC as well. I just don't know that they take more than half a dozen teams from the ACC this year.

i'm not optimistic necessarily that we will do what it takes to make the tourney (4-1, 1 in the ACCT) but i'm pretty confident that that resume would get us in. 20-13 (11-9) record with two top 10 wins, one on the road, and our worst loss would be a 4 point road loss to a conference opponent. that's a tourney resume...especially looking at other bubble teams' resumes.

i'll borrow this from DalCowboys post in another thread

State: 4-7 vs RPI top 50; best Ws: Duke, @Louisville, Boise, Pitt Bad Loss: Wake
UCLA: 1-5 vs RPI top 50; best W: Utah Bad Loss: Colorado
Illinois: 3-4 vs RPI top 50; best W: Baylor, Mich, MSU Bad Loss: Neb
Tulsa: 1-4 vs RPI top 50; best W: @Temple Bad Loss: Oral Roberts
Boise St: 2-3 vs RPI top 50; best Ws: Col. St, SD St. Bad Losses: Loyola, Utah St., Fresno St.
Purdue: 3-4 vs RPI top 50; best Ws: State, IU, OSU Bad Losses: Vandy, Gardner Webb, N. Florida
Oregon: 2-3 vs RPI top 50; best Ws: Illinois, UCLA Bad Losses: Washington St.
Miami: 3-4 vs RPI top 50; best Ws: Illinois, @Duke, St. Bad Losses: GT, FSU, WF, E. Kentucky

We have the best wins by far out of this class.

not to mention, our RPI is currently in the 40s. iirc, that's about 10-15 spots higher than it was last year when we made it. but, it's hard to compare season to season, since a lot of it depends on individual bubble teams from year to year.

I'm cautiously optimistic as it seems like the offense is flowing better. All we need is for the bigs to keep setting good picks for Barber or Lacey and that will lead to high percentage shots. @Louisville was the most pick and rolls we have seen all season. If we can keep doing then the offense will open up drastically. I really hope this team make it to the NCAA as I feel that will pay dividends for a young team next season. We already proved we can hang and also kick the ass out of the top team's in the nation. We also showed that we can lose to the lesser ones, so now is a prefect time to put together consistent play.

I think so. You gotta assume that anything in the Top 100, while not a "good" loss...can't be considered a "bad" loss.

Clemson loss to GT and UVA win against Pitt both help us in terms of being that "6th" ACC team to get into the tourney. Gotta take care of business against VT and have some momentum going into the weekend against the cheaters.

I don't know that the committee really puts great stock in arbitrary distinctions like top 50 RPI wins or losses to sub-100 RPI teams. Because, obviously, losing to multiple teams with RPI in the 90s isn't signiciantly better than losing to teams with an RPI in the low 100s. The difference in opponents there would be insignificant IMO. But to answer your question, ESPN and the talking heads always talk about top 50 wins as your "good wins" and losses to sub-100 teams as "bad losses". Of course, if Pitt drops from the upper 40s to low 50s by selection sunday, that doesn't make our win vs Pitt any less important or any less tourney-worthy.

The loss to West Virginia keeps getting more and more reasonable. They play 4 ranked teams in their final 5 games, so if they can pull out any more big wins like they did vs Kansas then they will be solidly in our "good losses" column, regardless of the score.

Clemson was actually in the bubble conversation about a week ago. The loss to GT likely knocks them out, but it's not a "bad loss". I took bad losses as RPI>100. I don't think that's unreasonable at all.

Stop trying to come up with reasons why we shouldn't be in...

look, I want State to make the Tourney as much as anybody. but let's call a spade a spade.

we lost, at home, by 11 points, to a Clemson team that will likely finish the season with 15 losses and an RPI in the 100's

it's not a good loss

I want to get to 10-8 just so we don't have to sweat it out...but 9-9 in a stacked ACC with two top 10 wins (one on the road) and something around a 40 RPI gets you in.

I think we get into the tourney with a 9-9 conference record AND at least one ACC tourney win. Our strength of schedule is going to help us tremendously. Also, beating Duke and Louisville on the road stacks up nicely against other bubble teams, who btw, have more bad losses than we do (>100 rpi).

"NC State [15-11 (6-7), RPI: 47, SOS: 2] Ask and ye shall receive. OK, so we didn't exactly ask NC State to go out and get its bad self a win at Louisville Saturday. We merely said the Wolfpack would have to conjure something special against the Cardinal to remain in the bubble conversation. That, it turns out, is exactly what they did. NC State's 74-65 win at Louisville is about as good as February bubble wins get, and pretty rare, too -- it's just not that often you see a mediocre team beat a very good one on the road. In doing so, NC State fully stopped the last month of slippage, when it had lost five out of six, and completely redeemed last week's close missed chance at home against Virginia. Mark Gottfried's team gets to take the week off before what should (note: should) be an easy home victory over Virginia Tech, one that will get State back to .500 in league play. And if NC State can possibly repeat the trick at UNC, we might have our first genuine bubble miracle of the season at hand. "

Isn't the Louisville win the bubble miracle of the season already according to that article?

a UNC win would mean a true contender/above average ACC bubble team.

Somehow it never fails...Gottfried's teams get on this crazy end of year get hot at the right time rolls. Then the tourney comes out and everyone's hopes get raised for another slightly above average bubble team.

When placing teams in the regions, does the selection committee try to avoid repeat matchups from earlier in the season during the round of 64? I'd rather not play WVU or Cincinnati's football teams again, at least not initially.
