Fits here I guess. Somewhat amusing comments from Greg Little.

Probably nothing we don't know but this could have an impact on accreditation of the department. Not that it means much at this point.

Pretty much par for the course but still wish there would have been something more to keep the fire blazing.

Hats off to UNC, A+ for crisis management and PR. The scandal is almost over. It was fun while it lasted. This is where it ends.

"Dear Carolina Community:

Over the past year, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) has been reviewing the University's compliance with accreditation requirements in light of past academic irregularities in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies.

Earlier today, I was notified that the SACSCOC Board of Trustees has decided not to sanction the University. The University remains fully accredited and in good standing with SACSCOC. We will be asked to provide a monitoring report by next June on continued progress with our academic procedures in the department.

We are very pleased with this decision. Throughout this process, the University has been treated fairly by SACSCOC. We have provided information, responded to all questions, taken necessary actions, and documented the comprehensive reforms that we have put in place over the past two years because of issues related to the unprofessional and unethical actions of two former department employees.

We are confident the sweeping changes we have made, based on the results of seven internal and independent, outside reviews or investigations, will prevent any recurrence of these irregularities.

For more information about SACSCOC and this issue, visit the University's accreditation website, http://oira.unc.edu/accreditation/.

As a founding member of SACSCOC, we are committed to an accreditation process, led by colleagues from our peer campuses in the region, that ensures accountability and strong academic standards. Under Chancellor Folt's leadership, I'm confident that Carolina will bring our response to SACSCOC to a successful conclusion.

Sincerely,

Holden Thorp

It was only the person creating the bogus classes. All the athletic advisors that requested the classes be created weren't in the wrong.

This way, any program in the future can say that the violation was done by a rogue booster, athlete, professor or coach. Penn State could have avoided sanctions by claiming a rogue DC,coach, President and Chancellor

Guy I went to hs with on the SACSOC article...

"So now the N&O won't have anything to write about"

Me: the emails that just came out are evidence enough for everyone. If you throw enough money at a problem it will go away.

Me: The thing that stinks for UNC is these things that keep coming out... PJ will be a rouge player and be sent on his way

Him: The ncaa did as thorogh an investigation as they have EVER done on any campus in this country for about 4 years now so nothing "just went away" ...it just ended. If you don't realize that then you are ignorant to the situation and your comnents on the matter are irrelevant. Pj hairston has NOTHING to do with this. Different story completely. I understand you only read the n&o because its s state paper. Its fairly obvious to most people outside side of raleigh that the only people still trying to keep a dying story going are state fans and this one news outlet. Its time for them to move on and start covering their own stories.

Him: Do you not find it the least bit ironic that the ncaa released the story above and THE NEXT DAY a stort of pj maybe being an acquaintance of a agent...Who is from gboro by the way....came out? Jealousy over the incredible difference in success on the playing fields will make you create stories that aren't there I guess

Bless him

LOL, UNC had ppl like Martin conduct sham investigations so that fans can bullshit their way out of an argument like this.

Posted the espn article posted last week about the case not being over and this was his response...

Him: I'm talkin about ALL the articles over the past few years man. I know way more about this situation than you do and yes a lot of time espn will cover the same stories obviously if they are involving sports at ANY major institution but it always seems to come out FIRST from the N&O. none of this is relevant anyway because when the NCAA says an investigation is over at this point then no matter what espn, cnn, the times news, or the state student newspapers have to say because THEY DONT HAVE A SAY. the ncaa is all that matters. Bottom line

"University spokeswoman Karen Moon said in an email that a number of offices on campus are already involved in handling the new supplementary courses, and an email address and phone number have been established specifically for organizing the courses.

But calls and emails made by The Daily Tar Heel to both inquiry lines went unanswered."

i'm sure it's nothing but come on! look at us we are fixing things we've got phones set up to help people make up these courses.......sure there's no one answering them but they are there!!

Everyone's degree still counts. You can just take some remedial classes to help take the stink of your degree if you want.

But you can never totally get rid of the smell.

"n NCAA interviews in 2010, Austin and teammates Greg Little, Kendrick Burney and Charles Brown all told investigators they met Watson.

“I met him, uh, he contacted me via phone and we went out to eat and we talked or whatever,” Austin told NCAA investigators. “I paid for my meal. And, uh, that was really, really it.”"

Quote :
"But Austin offered a slightly different picture to special agents with the Secretary of State who interviewed him on several occasions in 2010 and 2011.

A.H. Jones, a special agent with the Secretary of State, said in an Oct. 23 search warrant application that Austin told her: “Terry Watson was a guy who gave me money.”

Austin said that Willie Barley, a go-between in Miami, facilitated the sending of a FedEx package with $2,000 inside and a bogus name on the outside to the Chapel Hill home where Austin lived during his college years."

lol straight up lied to the NCAA.

also this:

Quote :
"Records collected by special agents in the Secretary of State probe show that a FedEx package was sent to an address where Jennifer Wiley, the UNC tutor identified as providing extra help to student-athletes, once lived."

!!!!!

somebody please tell me how an agent is sending money to a tutor with no one on in the athletic department knowing about it. I MEAN HOW DOES AN AGENT EVEN FIND THE TUTOR?

The NCAA has already proven that they won't do shit about this, its been too long. I mean hell, emails came out a few months ago that showed a direct trail between the AFAM dept and academic advisors.

They don't have subpoena power so their info is always going to be less than the truth. My hope from this is that it pisses someone off in the NCAA compliance dept so that if they end up investigating Fatts/UNC basketball they take it out on them.

"Hey guys, this is McDonald with UNC Basketball and I personally endorse this mouth guard." few months go by... "Oh shit, I can't endorse a product according to NCAA rules, but since when do we give a shit about that? We have the "Carolina Way' that governs our school."

http://m.espn.go.com/ncb/story?storyId=9493465&src=desktop&wjb

Quote :
"NCAA rules generally prohibit athletes from endorsing or promoting a company or product.

"We sent a cease-and-desist letter to Iceberg regarding Leslie McDonald," said Steve Kirschner, UNC's senior associate athletic director for communications. "They took his name off their site as a customer last week."

North Carolina has spent much of the past three years dealing with off-field issues that began with an NCAA investigation of the football program. Now the school is trying to determine whether there are issues with its men's basketball program.
"

Quote :
"On Feb. 21, two days after the Tar Heels won at Georgia Tech, a photographer whose work is featured on the official UNC athletics website tweeted a photo of McDonald wearing a distinctive mouth guard featuring the school logo as well as the argyle pattern that trims the team's uniforms.

McDonald tweeted in response that it was "made by Iceberg."

Alex Gause, Lee's brother and a UNC graduate who works as a dentist in the same practice, tweeted the photographer and McDonald that the mouth guard "looks great! Custom made via IcebergGuards 4 anyone who's curious." He also linked both his and his brother's Twitter feeds in the post. Lee Gause retweeted his brother's post.

The school has declined to say how McDonald acquired the mouth guard. Iceberg's website shows customized mouth guards -- including one endorsed by former Tar Heel and current NBA player Danny Green of the San Antonio Spurs -- ranging from $150 to as much as $1,500.

Last week, UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham said the school is gathering information on potential improper conduct by student-athletes, though he didn't name any player specifically. His statement came a month after Hairston's arrest at a license checkpoint in Durham for misdemeanor marijuana possession."

The sad part is I have heard of UNC fans and a few actual students basically laughing at the NCAA and saying how they are untouchable. However if Michigan's Fab Five could be brought down, so can UNC.

BTW, this thread should just be called UNC Athletic Scandals, it's far from limited to football anymore.
