gg ronnie - but we might've gotten more if he could run bases

I've never understood why baserunners go to second on throws home...they KNOW there's a cutoff guy there just waiting to cut it off and throw them out at second

Yeah hopefully the Carpenter that pitched like a HOF-er the last couple of seasons shows up and not the Carpenter that seems to show up in the regular season in September can come out the rest of the way. We need this game, because I dunno what we would do going back to San Diego. Jeff Weaver again?

This series is like watching baseball in a morgue. I can't feel excitement from either team or crowd.. I always hear how awesome Cards fans are but each postseason I am consistently unimpressed with the crowds..

To be fair, the last two years there hasnt been much to be excited about concerning the Cardinals when the post season came around.

I feel like we've been in a post season hitting slump ever since game 2 of the world series (whenever we lost to boston when both teams scored double figures)....except for pujols.

When people talk about how great Cardinals fans are, they're not talking about excitement generated. You shouldn't expect ACC basketball attitudes in Busch. Instead it's usually about baseball knowledge, hospitality to opposing teams and players, and generating a family atmosphere with former players and coaches.

My dad was telling me about a game he went to as a kid when Roger Maris was playing for the Cardinals towards the end of his career. His power numbers had been way down for years, but in one of his first at-bats he got a hustle double on a ball hit right to an outfielder. The fans gave him a standing ovation that partially delayed the next at-bat. That pretty much sums up Cardinals fans.

It's just that we're not "built" for the postseason. You need 2 really strong starters to compete, and 3 is awesome. We have 1, and then a bunch of "others". Last year and the year before I honestly believe we were the best 162 game team, but unfortunately our rotation wasn't built for a 7-game series. Remember the year the Diamondbacks won the World Series.... the Big Unit and Curt Schilling combined for every single one of the wins that series. Do you honestly believe that if the Yanks and the D-Rays played 20 games, with every starter starting 4 games, that the D-Rays could have won more than 3 of the 12 games that Johnson/Schilling didn't pitch? Not unless someone got real hot. But unfortunately, baseball does not mirror the regular season. In football, hockey, and basketball, the teams field roughly the same team as in the regular season, but with baseball, they leave out 2 (and sometimes 3) of the most key players in the game, pitchers.

In summary, our top 3 can't compete with the top 3 of our competition, so that is why we lost the last 2 seasons and why we will probably lose this season.

Now when can carpenter pitch again? As long as he can go twice in the mets series we have an outside chance in hell.

^^^Start game 3 at home, then maybe game 7 if it goes that far.

I would guess it would be Weaver for game 1 and Reyes/Marquis for game 2. Then Carp in 3 and Suppan in 4.

Weaver in game 1?

That is embarassing.

Game 1 is Wednesday, which is plenty of time for Suppan to get ready. Then Carpenter, then Weaver. That's just my guess/opinion though.

This sucks. The Cards are putting men on base and hitting the ball hard, but they are just not getting the breaks they need to score.

No I am not kidding at all. They hit the ball hard a lot. I think they had like 4 really hard line outs in the first 5-ish innings. Along with that, the guy that replaced Floyd made a spectacular catch of a hit that probably would have driven in a run (had it fallen and gotten behind the guy). Plus Pujols and his dipshit base running (wtf was he thinking?) Plus, as the night went on, Glavine's strike zone seemed to get bigger while Weaver's shrunk. Make no mistake about it, other than one swing of the bat, the Cardinals dominated that game.

I agree with all but the dominated, Weaver actually pitched better than Glavine, but you had to expect Glavine to get all those calls. It also didn't help when Jeff bitched about a strike when he was batting.

Yeah, you're right, it was far from dominating. But aside from the Beltran swing, I would say the Cardinals were easily the much better team.

On a side note, Weaver seems to run out of gas quick.

You're going to get your ass kicked if you wear a Card's whatever...

Oh and Pujols is going to get it tonight from the crowd. I expect a Rockeresque greeting after what he said about Glavine.

I didnt' see that. The zone was 6 inches off the plate all night long for both pitchers. That is why Weaver's mistake to Beltran was so big. He put it right in his happy zone when the ump was giving him the outside all night long.. it ended up costing the game.

Maybe so but you can't overlook that the Mets played a FLAWLESS defensive game. All the talk was about how the Mets need to score runs to win. What happens when they don't? They find a different way to beat you, like a good team will.

Good luck the rest of the way, though I still see this as Mets in 5..[quote]

I look like an ass for saying you guys don't belong. Way to take it to us. Damn good baseball team when you're playing well.

I just gotta pray my Mets can get their heads out of their asses. If you represent the senior circuit in the World Series do us well.. that's all.

Why is La Russa always looking for excuses when his pitchers get lit up?

Reyes was not tipping his pitches. If he was then what were Thompson and Hancock doing telling them before they threw it???

Dude.... it's OK. We do belong. I'd say without a doubt we are at least the second best team in the NL. We didn't lose to the Dodgers this year and we thumped San Diego in the playoffs. I think Tony made a big mistake pulling Reyes (he was pitching really well out of the stretch) but who knows, maybe Reyes would have fallen apart too. The fact is, the Mets will have to beat either Suppan or Carpenter to beat us, and that is no easy task. PLUS I bet that the Cards will hit much better against Glavine tomorrow, so I would not be surprised at all to see Weaver beat the Mets tomorrow. I still like where we are in the series, even though our bullpen got exposed today.

Go Cards.

^I agree but would Reyes have given up 12 runs???

Seriously though they are calling for rain tommorrow and that would probably not be good for our team. We want Glavine to pitch on short rest and I really don't think that Weaver would be affected as much.

Tony "I like to pull the double switch in the most retarded situations because I like it in the ass" Larussa

Is that the same guy as Tony "I benched Scott Rolen, one of the best 3rd basemen in the league over a little hitting slump" Larussa?
