Gotta bitch a bit - just got our open memos back and her mother fucking first comment was that some of the lines looked like they didn't follow the formatting requirements...jesus christ we also had to submit digital copies...you can go see that the formatting is consistent throughout if you are concerned about it. Fuck getting marked down because the printer made a couple words here and there look like TNR 11 rather than TNR 12.

I had to wait long as hell to get my apps in, because my last recommender just wouldn't get it together. I just submitted a half dozen apps, and we'll see what happens.

LLMs. Discuss.

it seems with the current job market, a lot of my peers are applying for jobs AND LLM programs for the fall. however, it also seems like some LLM programs prefer at least a year of work before application to the program.

does anyone know if theres a general rule about when to apply for an LLM?

i'm considering applying for next fall - for health law & policy. i only came across ONE program that stated it only accepted people who have practiced for at least a year before application.

i just don't know what to do with my life. ahhhhh.

khcadwal, I'm staying at UF another year and doing the UF Tax LLM next year. I don't have any relevant work experience at all and I've done decent but not outstanding gpa wise (not top 1/3 but close). I've just done well in all of my tax classes and did everything possible to make myself seem like a good candidate.

Everyone I know getting their LLM came straight out of law school.

not to burst a bubble, and I'm not even sure how true this is, but several professors have told me that the only LLM worth getting is for tax law.

i know i have heard that too. but i thought since health was an up and coming field and i'm interested in policy....maybe i'll just ask our career services people

anyway it was more of a back up plan if (aka WHEN) i don't get a job.

Damn, a week off school in the middle of the semetter with 20 inches of snow outside is going to kill the little motivation I had. I can't even go to a library to force myself to work... they are all closed.

Can't you read some of your books and get a head start on the rest of the semester, or maybe make some outlines of the important stuff so far to help you in studying for the finals?

^a 25 page paper? that is beyond my skill set to do adequately in 2 days.

i have heard stories though of people writing papers the night before they were due and getting by. I have no idea how that is possible.

^ hehe.

i have done 25 pages the night before and "gotten by"

usually with an A- or B+ (but i have gotten a solid A before)

which begs the question WHAT would i get if i actually spent time on it?

i actually think my grade would be worse. i like need the pressure.

I honestly couldn't write a paper unless it was the day/night before. I would throw some shit together in the weeks before just so the teacher would be happy and see that I had a "rough" draft.

Then my final paper would be completely different (sometimes I would seriously change the topic and email professor the night before saying I hit a wall with the previous topic and just didn't feel comfortable turning in a final product). I would always get a decent grade (never made worse than a B on my law school papers), but the teacher would be like "Not where I thought you were originally good, but good paper" or "You've made a lot of progress since you're rough draft."

I would try to make "fake deadlines" for myself...but it just never worked. I still procrastinate in my practice...but not nearly as much as I did in law school.

i just took a tour, should find out by Friday if i got in (accepted Elon and Franklin Pierce so far)

that place is straight in the middle of the ghetto but i did like the facilities, tightknit and not intimidating

We don't graduate until May 14th but its really over at UF on May 7th. I have to keep reminding myself that at noon on that day it will be over, I'll be back in NC that night, and on May 8th I'll be drinking myself silly at the Darlington race. That seems like a ways off but that is helping keep me motivated. I am definitely experiencing the law school 3rd year boredom and senioritis.

All this graduation talk is making me depressed. I have a 10 page paper due monday. 12 page due Friday. And midterm on Friday. Then there is the studying I have to do in case I get called on in class. I feel like shit, and law school sucks. 1L FTL.

Yeah, my big sister got her MD and PhD... I'm aware. I wouldn't use the word "cake" in comparison, but i'm aware of the differences. Thanks.

My main problem is I'm required to do all the shit the ABA wants us to do... then 40 hours of public interest legal internship hours. It isn't that hard, there just isn't enough time.

I got my app in back in January. Big pain in my ass, but I wasn't about to give those fuckers another $250, 300, or whatever it is for the late fee.

What does everyone/anyone think about independent contractor legal work? Basically a firm paying you by the hour for the work you do, but not giving benefits or office space?

yea the late fee is $250

i guess i was secretly hoping i'd have a job by now and i would know where i should REALLY be taking the bar

no such luck

so yea i'm just gonna have to include copies of my requests for transcripts in my app

i've spent like all weekend doing it. thank GOD i don't have like military service/am not married/etc

but all the jobs and residences i've had since i was 18 really did me in. that was hard.

also does anyone know what result unsatisfactory credit will have on my bar app?

i mean i have bad credit - not the worst but it isn't great. its all from when i was like 18 though. it has all been paid off for 3 years and i have like 17 accounts in good standing (like mostly student loan accounts but none of those have ever been defaulted on).

i know its stupid blahblahblah but theres nothing i can do about it now - damage is / has been done. i just didn't know how heavy this would weigh on my "character and fitness"

anyone???

You'll be fine...it's just bad credit. Especially in this economy, you won't get any red flags for that.

A job is a job. Unless you have other options, I don't see why you wouldn't take it.

This I know, which is why I will most likely take it. However, I was looking for more substantive comments. Someone who has some experience with it and could give some insight.

Obviously it depends on what sort of Ph.D....but I'm inclined to say "No way, man"

Getting a Ph.D. is a piece of cake compared to law school...

I'm a grad student in math, and I love my work. It's interesting, there's next-to-no studying per se, and I only have to take at most 9 hrs/semester

and usually I don't even take that

but law school would kill me.

I turned in an 11 page memo on monday, I have e "client letter" and another memo due Friday (probably 18 pages total). And our contracts midterm is also on Friday.

On the plus side, my gf and I are spending spring break in Puerto Rico, leaving Saturday morning. 2 days on the beach, 2 days in the rain forest. Then back to DC to work at my internship for the rest of the break.
