I'd guess sometime around summer, which sucks. I thought I had seen a release date for the European version which was going to have 3G but I haven't looked into it in quite some time. I was hoping they'd do it in the next month or so but that wouldn't make much sense now since they just added the larger storage. I mean, at the very least add the ability to use an external GPS receiver.. that wouldn't be the best solution but it'd be a hell of a lot better than what it is now. 3G is really what everybody is waiting for though, obviously.

From what I gather, the newly released GPS triangulation works "well enough" (for pedestrian navigation, anyway.) So I don't really care about that too much. 3G is a must, and a beefier battery would be nice. 2/5/2008 10:00:00 AM |

So here's something I've always wanted to know...
If you know you're gonna buy an iphone and sign the 2 year contract with AT&T anyway, but you don't really get any reduction for being a new customer or whatever, then can you just go to the AT&T store and sign a 2 year contract, get one of the free/cheap phones and then immediately go buy an iphone? Then you'd have both phones and could sell one off to take a little bit of the price off the iphone. 2/5/2008 10:26:47 AM |

that's a good question...

I hope thats not the case.
Quote : | "From what I gather, the newly released GPS [cell tower] triangulation works "well enough" (for pedestrian navigation, anyway.) So I don't really care about that too much. 3" |
the cell-phone-tower-triangulation just tells you where you are on a map (within a large circle)...it isn't integrated into navigation anything. the real use of a gps-enabled iphone would be vehicular navigation, which obviously isn't possible with this cell tower thing.
so when is this SDK coming out? Hows it all going to go down? Will there be any need for the jailbreak after the SDK, will we be able to install whatever we want? I'm assuming thats not the case, and there will be a small # of applications approved/released thru iTunes. any ideas?]2/5/2008 10:40:37 AM |
FanatiK All American 4248 Posts user info edit post |
the slide about the SDK said "End of February", so I'm guessing we'll hear more about it in a couple weeks. I don't quite think you'll be able to do "whatever you want" with it, but it should result in a bunch of quality apps being released (I'm thinking they'll probably have to go through some kind of approval process before they can officially be installed).
So, the cell tower triangulation won't do navigation? If I'm walking around with my iPhone and look up the nearest Starbucks, there's no way to get it to (easily) give me directions to that Starbucks from where I am? Like say, a "get directions...from current location" button? If so, lame and I want GPS in iPhone 2.

ah ok i haven't used that "get directions from current location" feature, but i know it still doesn't do real time street by street navigation...which would be impossible using cell tower location info. 2/5/2008 11:15:59 AM |

that I'm not sure about... It has something to do with trying to use network times to sort text messages instead of just using the time it actually makes it to the iphone to sort them. I wonder if it has something to do with different carriers having slightly different times... that would make sense since it primarily happens when a lot of fast texting is happening and a service providers clock being off a few seconds would actually make a difference
no clue if that's right, but it's my best guess 2/5/2008 2:12:52 PM |

Yes. You can do that. I asked someone at AT&T (a location where they actually sell the iphone) when I was in there because I plan on doing the exact same thing. She said that was fine.2/5/2008 2:34:22 PM |

What trick are you talking about? The one I mentioned? I mean, you'd still have to sign up for the iphone plan. You would just switch to that plan just like any other current AT&T customer that buys an iphone. The only difference would be you would be a BRAND NEW current AT&T customer as opposed to someone that had been with them for a year or whatever.
I still don't see why it wouldn't work. 2/6/2008 1:55:55 PM |

You can have an iphone without visual voicemail, I know because I did for about a week........it is included in the iPhone plan but the iPhone doesn't require the iPhone plan in order to work. When I initially activated my iPhone it simply kept me on the same voice & data plan I had already been on with Cingular instead of changing me to the iPhone plan, as a result every aspect of the iPhone worked (voice, data, etc), only I didn't have visual voicemail until I called customer service and had them manually change my plan to the iPhone plan.
Which is why I said

was not true, it's not enough to simply have at&t service and some sort of data plan, you need the iPhone plan specifically in order for the visual voicemail to work2/7/2008 11:55:28 PM |

exactly.
newer generations will always be better than older ones... so even if you got the 5th gen of a car/appliance/software, the 6th will be better. but, you gotta buy it at sometime.
however, those why buy the first gen of anything are stupid. not only are 1st gens stupidly expensive, but also have poor features, and most importantly, design and software flaws/bugs.
my first ipod was the 5th gen ipod, and my first iphone will also be at least the 3rd gen. (so i can replace my current ipod and phone with one appliance) 2/10/2008 3:24:44 PM |

^^ of course, that's ignoring the fact that the AT&T CEO already claimed last year we would "have [3G] next year" http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/29/atandt-ceo-outs-3g-iphone-youll-have-it-next-year/ of course, plans change, but 3G could happen within a year, but nationwide wi-fi on the 700MHz spectrum will take several years to implement 2/12/2008 9:14:38 AM |

is there more potential for speed with 3G or the 700mhz wifi? Maybe longterm they'll aim towards wifi. Seems that there are a few advantages for it and they could easily then sell internet service to anybody with coverage--kind of like clearwire except hopefully faster. 2/12/2008 9:17:21 AM |

i may not be fully up-to-date on all the wireless lingo, but i don't think this should technically be called "WiFi". I thought WiFi referred specifically to the 802.11_ family, which is not what will be implemented on the 700MHz spectrum. Unless I'm confused here, I think they will have to implement a form of WiMax or some other wireless standard, but not WiFi as we know it today.2/12/2008 9:25:24 AM |

yeah, i think they're trying to use "wifi" interchangeably with "wireless broadband" which is definitely wrong.
Has the FCC auction for the old UHF frequencies finished yet? depending on the outcome of that, 700Mhz could be used for WiMax. 2/12/2008 10:18:40 AM |
