^nice work! I'd like to get my time around there.
Anybody doing the Savannah RnR half or full marathon in November? (Or has anybody done it in the past?) I'm itching to do another and think that might be a fun one. 9/25/2012 7:28:33 AM |

Ran a 5 mile in Umstead yesterday (Reedy/Turkey) and held my mile splits at around 6:45/6:50. SO PROUD!!!!!! Been training on getting in shape for a year now...
Have lost 12lbs Increased my squats from 20lbs to 50lbs My mile times have gone from 12 to 6:45 (For 5 miles or less) and from 15 to 8:30 (up to 14 miles) 9/27/2012 11:35:34 AM |

Damn - very nice. What have you been doing to get that fast?
The summer (and probably more miles) destroyed me. I used to do sub 8 min miles for short runs and they're around 9 now. Did some hill sprints yesterday and had to walk for a bit after each one .
Never really ran into more than a few, but I ran into the largest cloud of gnats the other day. Pretty much held up my arm to shield my face and my sweaty arm was covered in dead gnats, my face, and pretty much every appendage that could wipe dead bugs off. Yesterday sucked. 10/4/2012 4:28:56 PM |

Honestly, been mixing up my training...
Tuesday and Thursday I do 1.5 hours of dancing and 1.5 hours of vball. I also do lifting the hour beforehand.
Monday or Friday I run 5-8 miles and lift for at least an hour (changing up muscle groups).
Wednesday I do 2-3 hours of the gym...weights, speed workouts on the track, ab workout, kettleball, resistance training....
Every night I do a 20 minute ab workout, push ups, and planks.
Saturday I dance and take the rest of the day to eat a lot of food and relax.
Sunday I do an Umstead run/bike...bike on my single speed 7 miles to umstead and 7 miles back after I run 10-14 miles at a more relaxed pace (10 minute miles).
I realistically don't run as much. My knees and back are kinda bad...but I work on overall strength, flexibility, and do a lot of core workouts. During the Spring/Summer/Fall I also do big backpacking trips (100+ miles per week) on the Appalachian trail...so I'm usually dragging 30lbs of gear up and down mountains for 10 hours a day.

I did manage to drop my pace by about 45 seconds though, which made me quite One of these days I'll hit my goal of an 8-flat pace for a half marathon. 10/13/2012 7:13:09 PM |

Ran 12 miles in 30 degree weather this morning. Not too bad, myfleece lined tights worked like a charm.
Next weekend I get to do it all over again plus run a 5k the next day
Then it's on to DC for the MCM 10k. Anyone running the marathon or 10k?

Might have asked this - where are you all running at night? I want to find a few places when it gets stupid dark in November. I ran with a light on roads last year (probably not a good idea alone) and on an unlit school track that I'd prefer not to repeat. I've gotten crazy paranoid about running in the dark and shitty drivers. 10/23/2012 2:01:10 PM |

Got my 20 miler done yesterday in 3:30- shooting for 4:30 for my first marathon- OBX Nov. 11. Hopefully the weather will behave itself and won't look like today (25 mph windgusts, 45 degrees, and bursts of rain).
My dog has run all my training with me, but I don't think he can come to the Outer Banks and race. 10/29/2012 6:12:10 PM |

question: i am running my first half on Sunday. normally i find that i don't get any weird side stitches/pains if i eat at least 3 hours before i run. the race on Sunday starts at 7:00am so i am wondering if i should eat something right before i go to sleep or just not eat anything at all? i have gone out running without eating anything before but i worry that with 13 miles i'll get hungry and start to go into meltdown mode (low sugar).
just a FYI - i can't have the gels or jelly beans or any of that gooey crap so that kind of throws that idea out of the window. i also don't like running with anything and i don't bring water with me on my long runs so bringing a snack might not work so well. 10/30/2012 7:47:22 AM |

"Also, if it's the 3rd Wednesday of a month I have to do a 4 hour preparatory lamb sacrifice 3 days in advance, mail myself a letter containing a code, then decipher the code 3 minutes and 26 seconds before I start running."
But really. Hear me out, maybe I can offer some insight:
Eat a decent dinner right before sleep, then eat 100-300 calories (powerbar, fruit / bread with peanut butter, etc.) about an hour before the race starts. And drink a little bit of something - water, gatorade, whatever. Though, a majority of your hydration should come from the 1-2 days before.
I hope this helps in the slightest!] 10/30/2012 9:13:04 AM |

haha, thanks Minka.
Had a blast Sunday, even though I was about 40 minutes off what I was hoping to finish... I was killing my first 15, averaging around 8:13-8:30 for my splits, but somehow, got super sick and lost all my stomach contents at the portajohn at MM 15. Next thing I know, from mile 18 on, I had the worst cramps. Thighs, legs, and holy cow calfs were almost complete knots. (Coming from someone who has never had leg cramps for any run before, I admittedly doubted those who said it was some of the worst running pain you can have, but now I know it is!)
The crowds were amazing, especially through Crystal City and the finish. Cant wait for the next in February (Myrtle Beach), and will definitely do DC MCM next year! Here's to hoping I can swing my 3:35-3:45 then!
This ish is addictive! 10/30/2012 9:30:56 AM |

EXACTLY!
i just knew from testing out a few things during training what gave me my optimal runs with minimal issues (one time i went running and my stomach was acting up the entire time - yes last time i ate something kind of high in fiber 1-2 hours before a long run ) and since the race is so early in the morning its not like i can just get up and eat something and go do some things before going to run.
but your advice definitely helps and i appreciate it. i've run tons of 5Ks, 8Ks and a 10K before. i've been training for the last month so i think i'll be fine i just didnt know if there was something someone has done that has helped them.10/30/2012 9:56:21 AM |

You could get a runner's belt and stuff it with: jelly beans /jolly ranchers / pretzels / gummy worms / whatever you enjoy. But really, if you've been eating / hydrating properly, a light snack 30-60 minutes before the race should be fine.
Is this the City of Raleigh Half / Marathon you're doing? 10/30/2012 10:26:16 AM |

You don't need too much for a half. I've run a couple without anything and just using the water stops but they had gels at m10.
But for my long runs now, the advice I got was ~100 cals every 45 mins, and you want some electrolytes of some kind. I've tried salt sticks (its a pill) the last few long runs but am not sure how they affected my runs.
Could try Honey Stingers.. I've a friend who can't do the gels but can eat those fine. WF and Smoothie King have them. 10/30/2012 10:54:21 AM |

unfortunately i can't do ANY of the processed gels/candys/honey sticks/jelly beans. i'm allergic to processed foods and preservative.
i think i'll be fine - i'm just more concerned about how i feel when i wake up. normally i wake up pretty hungry so i didn't know if eating something before i go to bed would help at all. 10/30/2012 11:22:23 AM |

Just in time for shorter daylight/night time running, Active.com's version of Groupon, called "Schwaggle" has some deals today on headlamps-- one of which is a tiny LED that clips onto the brim of your hat. Haven't tried this brand or that particular light myself, but I thought I'd share the link in case anyone is interested: http://schwaggle.active.com/Cyclops-Solutions?cmp=24-4-72652-1 11/2/2012 9:26:18 AM |

Meh. People can bitch all they want, but 50,000 people is up to 50,000 spending money in the city, which all the free market capitalists will argue, will help NYC get back on its feet sooner.
Why live in a city at all if you can't enjoy the cultural and recreational opportunities afforded by it?

I personally run every day. I don't see why the street(or the entire city, in fact) has to be closed down for me to exercise. If I tried to play basketball in the middle of the street they'd haul me to jail. I don't see what the difference is. And in this case of New York and many other cities, the track route is specifically chosen to only inconvenience people that are economically weakest and politically insignificant. I would also question the economic gain of tourists that all left their wallets back at the hotel vs. the lost wages of commercial delivery drivers/school buses/cabs/commuters and the general disruption of all normal business.
Most of this controversy could be avoided if the event was simply confined entirely to central park. NASCAR runs in circles, there's no reason people can't too. 11/2/2012 4:49:34 PM |

This weekend I agreed to run in a half marathon at the end of April for two of my friends' birthdays. I'm still so new to running and have only ever ran an official 5k, once, aside from general exercise. I have about 5 1/2 months to train. I'd like to be at a 9-10 minute mile pace and currently 'run' at a 12.
Any words of wisdom, advice, and motivation? 11/5/2012 10:23:51 AM |

prepare for your knees to be in a lot of pain the next day. my official pace time was 9:10/mile. they hurt really bad last night - not as bad today and other than a little soreness i feel good. i'll be hitting up boot camp tonight because i love to torture myself
you just have to find what motivates you. mine is listening to music so i make sure i have a great play list to listen to. train on hills! i train on hills because most courses throughout the area have some sort of hills on them (this course was a lot of hills). listen to your body - if you feel tired, slow down.
also don't feel like you HAVE to train with water or snacks/goo gels. i trained with neither and didn't use anything during the run. i didn't eat anything before either. i took the advice of the folks in this thread and made sure i started preparing days prior by upping my water intake and upping my carb intake slowly. 11/5/2012 11:07:06 AM |
