Ausrufen and I just got uverse set up today. 11.49 Mbps down and 1.47 up based on speedtest.net. Not too bad. The TV is great too. Question though, do you have to subscribe to HBO and Showtime to get the HBO/Showtime on demand? I wanna watch dexter on demand, but not pay for the whole channel. 1/7/2011 2:27:45 AM |

I'm pretty sure their agreement with Showtime says that you have to subscribe to the channel for the on-demand content. 1/7/2011 3:42:59 AM |

^^ afraid so. But, right now you can log into your U-Verse services at att.com (Log in under U-Verse, click Shop, Upgrade Now, Upgrade Now, then View More TV Offers) and get showtime for free for one month. Seven months ago I did that, and it gave it to me free for six months in the form of the Movie Package, which came with Showtime, Starz, TMC, etc. You can also get HBO/Cinemax free for three months.
But you must remember to log back in and turn it off before it runs out, otherwise they will begin charging you. 1/7/2011 8:48:34 AM |

bttt for the same question I asked in another thread, but thought that I might get more answers from AT&T customers if they saw this thread...
For anybody with just AT&T's high speed internet service....what is your general opinion of it?? Do you often lose the signal or is the signal weak a lot? Just trying to get a general consensus. 1/25/2011 1:36:45 PM |

I've had the highest speed U-Verse internet since July and I haven't had a single problem with it. Its fast as hell and so far has been reliable.
I tried the TV service, and while I really liked the functionality of the UI, the HD picture quality left much to be desired when compared to my DirecTV. 1/25/2011 2:04:35 PM |

When I canceled the TV service, they tried to keep me by cutting down the price, but I wasn't interested. Its been several months ago and I don't remember the specifics of their offer. 1/25/2011 2:07:09 PM |

In areas with U-Verse service they still offer basic AT&T DSL service, but they use the U-Verse fiber as the backhaul. As such, if U-Verse is offered in your area, and they say 6mbps AT&T DSL, they mean 6mbps. I believe it is still on special for $19.95/month for the first year. You will need to buy your own modem off ebay or rent it for $4/month. Well worth it for FTTN at crap DSL prices.
However, if U-Verse is not offered in the area, then they are probably still using the old copper up-links which means you must share bandwidth with the whole neighborhood, which means crappy internet, so good luck. 1/25/2011 4:37:59 PM |

those of you who switched from TWC, does your internet function better?

^Yes, on both questions, and by a significant margin. I moved again and had to switch back to TWC. It's miserable, like going back 5 years technology wise. 1/31/2011 9:42:22 PM |
LoneSnark All American 12317 Posts user info edit post |
^^ Yes and Yes. The internet is what the internet should be, full pipe 24/7. However, the TV is what I would miss if I moved. The TV is fast, can record 4 programs at once, be watched on any TV, and can hold 233SD/64HD hours on the DVR.
Just keep in mind, U-Verse is better and therefore more expensive on a monthly basis. I think it is worth the money, but I am also splitting the bill with others. 2/1/2011 11:07:22 AM |

I just get tired of having to reboot my gateway every month or so because of the error/data-loss creep. Don't notice it until a weeks worth of recordings are all artifact-y and sever audio loss/sync issues. 2/1/2011 5:34:05 PM |

This isn't cool. I download a lot of ISOs to play with in VMware and I also do a lot of file transfers between home and work. 3/13/2011 8:46:40 PM |
dFshadow All American 9507 Posts user info edit post |
i just did the math
i have the $65 plan right now - 24mbps down. if i'm capped at 250GB, that means i'd have to get their TV plan and a DVR to stay under that limit.
my new monthly bill would be $125 that's $60 more monthly.
instead, if I used that amount to pay the overage fees, I could get 300GB more, meaning a total of 550GB per month which I definitely won't hit and it's a flexible cost, meaning it won't be the full amount every month, only in heavy usage months.
so while I am pissed off, and am looking to FiOS to see if they have caps and are in my area, it wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to stay with U-verse and pay a bit extra because their overage costs are not too bad. 3/13/2011 11:33:01 PM |

According to my 2Wire box, my home has been the nexus of 3.5 terabytes. But I suspect that includes video and there is no hint over what time-frame it is. Either the time since last boot 27 days ago or since first activation 13 months ago. 3/14/2011 10:27:53 AM |

complete uverse noob here...
I have the opportunity to get it in a potential new condo, but i've never had an opportunity to have it before. I'm also pretty ignorant when it comes to internet speeds. The internet will be used 70% of the time for general web browsing, 20% for netflix or hulu streaming via ps3, and 10% for the occasional ps3 online game (call of duty, something similar). That being said, will the Pro package (3Mbps down) suffice for this? I plan to have the ps3 hard cabled in and not through wifi if that would help speeds. 3/15/2011 10:05:59 AM |
LoneSnark All American 12317 Posts user info edit post |
netflix would have trouble streaming high-def over a 3mbps link. Everything else you list would be just fine. 3/15/2011 10:13:40 AM |

is this one of those issues where we could pause a program, let it buffer for a few minutes (make a bowl of popcorn and pour a beer) and then be ok? I wouldn't mind bumping up to the Elite tier since I could lock pricing in for a year, but the TV portion is only locked in for 6 months and after that it really increases in cost 3/15/2011 10:19:03 AM |
LoneSnark All American 12317 Posts user info edit post |
Of course - if your netflix player can be locked to the HD stream. Regretfully, in the name of ease of use, most netflix players merely allow you to enable HD, not disable SD, and the player chooses which to use according to its own fancy. In the case of an honestly modest connection, then depending on the player you may never see an HD stream regardless of how much buffering you are willing to tolerate. 3/15/2011 11:17:14 AM |

So, I've subtracted my "torrenting," and we're still using 335 GB/mo according to the usage on the 3wire modem. So either I'll be switching to Time-Warner (I will now anyway when the Docsis 3.0 upgrade is here) or I'll drop from the 24Mb to 6 Mbit and cancel Netflix. Good going, AT&T--why would most people pay for 24/3 when they'd run out of bandwidth in less than a day? I might as well save myself $25-30 and just watch my usage. It's not going to make me pay for TV from them, since I only watch ~1 show/night from torrents (which are available streaming, but I like to watch the HD versions). So I'll just stream the regular versions from their websites.
TL;DR: AT&T is stupid. The money-grab will only work for the people they catch unaware--until newer uses emerge (3D youtube streams? etc) and it starts affecting everyone who doesn't just use the internet for email.
Meanwhile, I'll be looking to move to Wilson, Salisbury, or a Fios state. 3/22/2011 9:13:36 PM |
LoneSnark All American 12317 Posts user info edit post |
As I understand it, the usage reported on the gateway includes streaming to the DVR and TV boxes, which does not count towards your 250GB cap. The only way to see your real usage is for AT&T to tell you.
