Personally, I don't think the bomb caused the alternate time-line. If it turns out to be a true "alternate time-line" and not simply some dumbass "what if", I personally think that timeline has always existed or them simply traveling back caused a new time-line to essentially split off from the moment the got back there..

I don't want to go into it too lengthy of an explanation, I've posted (some long shit) about it in last season's or the season 4 thread. But with the rat experiments, Faraday had talked about there being these coexisting time-lines, realities, etc. And he was trying to send the rat's mind to the future and bring it back so it knew the maze without having been taught the maze. It wasn't as simple as sending it to the future though, he had to send it to a future in which it specifically learned the maze. He wasn't successful until Desmond told him the coordinates (2 points, maybe future time and specific time-line?), which he had told Desmond to go back and tell him. -- I don't recall exactly, it could have been that Desmond telling him actually sped his research up. But it may have always been from Desmond that he originally found out as well.

But yes, if it is an alternate time-line, I'm doubtful of the bomb causing it in any way. Mainly because I don't think the bomb went off in the original time-line. So, that's a huge difference right there that creates a bit of a paradox. If the bomb going off caused the alternate time-line, then it must not have gone off in the original time-line. So that means the second time-line was already different than the original time-line for the simple fact that the bomb went off - not just in the aftermath of the bomb going off.

And I'm not certain it went off in the alternate time-line either. - I think I said this already but; from what i've read that bomb was in the mega-ton range. I think that thing would fuck that island up pretty bad. And it didn't seem that bad in the under water scene necessarily (all of the houses were still standing). So I could be wrong about the destructive force of the bomb, it could be inaccurate writing, or the bomb didn't go off.

Again though, this is all based on the assumption that the flash-sideways are a true alternate time-line and that it's the future of when Jack, sawyer, and co. were hanging out on the island back in the 70's.

sometimes I wonder if you people actually watch the show. it was clear that the purpose of the bomb was not to blow up the damn island... it was to dissipate the energy... that implies the energy from the bomb would go towards canceling out most of the EM energy from the island as opposed to generating a massive island-engulfing explosion.

not to mention that it was NOT the hydrogen bomb its self that was detonated... only the fission trigger, which would only be in the lower kiloton range.

i don't think anyone has ever argued that the purpose of the bomb was to do anything other than what you said. the idea is that maybe the bomb detonated in the alternate timeline and caused some kind of event that made the island sink.

lol, I didn't know/recall that the fission trigger would cause such a drastically less potent effect than it would if the shell was around it. Although, it makes sense to a certain extent thinking about it. I don't recall the exact conversations. I thought they just took the "core" or fission trigger because it was a helluva lot easier to move than the entire bomb. I didn't recall or realize that it was because it would be less potent and that's all they really needed.

My line of thinking was that while it was intended to cancel out the electro magnetic field, it's still a huge ass bomb. A fully swung baseball bat would cancel out a roach on my wall, but it's going to cancel out some of my wall too. But taking the "just the fission trigger, so not as potent" part into consideration, that makes sense of why the buildings may still be around.

Just throwing out a possibility here (admittedly with a lot of hypotheticals), but...

What if it was just the trigger that went off and it did have significantly less explosive power? Say it only blew up the pocket and negated the electromagnetic energy. What if doing this somehow not only prevented 815 from crashing, but "corrected" time and wiped out the time-travelers, leaving only the people who were in their original time. Maybe the electromagnetic pocket being destroyed also somehow caused the island to gradually sink (through a chain of events that left enough time for Roger to escape with Ben the child).

I have no idea how this would pertain to so many people not ending up on the island, though. Maybe Jacob, for some reason, has no motive anymore to "push" them toward the island anymore in this alternate "corrected" timeline, or maybe he doesn't exist in it. I don't know. It seems like a stretch, and it is, but maybe not as much of a stretch as some of the past things they've done on Lost.

I described on either the last page or one of the previous pages about how perhaps the EM energy of the island somehow kept it buoyant, and removing that energy caused the island to slowly sink (thereby allowing people ample time to leave, etc.)

did i not reiterate that fact in my previous post when i said that was the idea being thrown around, not that the purpose of the bomb was to blow up the island?

I did read what you wrote, smath. I was using what you said about the trigger to show that maybe it was solely the bomb that caused the alternate timeline. I missed the other post where you talked about the EM energy and the buoyancy of the island. So, I guess I'm agreeing with you.

On a side note...I would rate this season much higher than 3/10. I've enjoyed it more than I've enjoyed any Lost season since Season 2, to be honest. I realize I'm in the minority.

don't know if i can sign on to this, mostly because roger linus said that they should have stayed on the island, which would imply that he did not know the island sunk and that the reason he left wasn't related to the island slowly sinking.

in regards to the island sinking and i know my memory is a bit fuzzy so maybe i am making this up, but in an earlier season, didnt everyone on the beach have to move because the tides kept coming closer and closer to them as the days went on? if that is tru, couldn't that lead to the theory of the tides continuing to go further inland and almost "swallowing" the island gradually over time?

there was an episode in season 1 where the tide was coming in. i think it might've been around the time when they were debating on staying at the beach or moving up to the caves. i doubt that'll be relevant ever again.

you'd think the black rock would've made it to the island before night time considering jacob and MiB saw it in the middle of the afternoon

think the loophole is in jacob's experiment.... and it could be the black rock in both cases. They may have sailed past the island by day and been swept back by night during a storm.
