Yeah the SA keeper is the only thing keeping them in the game. They are being dominated by Mex just cant get it in.

^ offsides

The defender takes the place of the goalkeeper so the last defender in this case is the goalkeeper, and the offensive player was behind him when the ball was played.

It was really an excellent call.

ehh he got lucky just then. thats the worst thing you can do is come out on a corner and fan at it. hes about 1 foot of offsides of it being 1-0 and it being his fault

mexico are dominating in the air in the box...if they keep it up 2nd half they could blow south africa out if they actually start finding the net

Offside. There has to be 2 defenders between the attacker and the goal. Typically one of the defenders is the goaltender. The attacker was behind the goalie, leaving only one defender (the one standing at the front post) between him and the goal.
The English announcers are complaining, but I think it was the right call.

Seriously it was. At first I was like, "WTF? How can you possibly be offside on a corner??"
But then they showed the replay and I was like "oh snap"

how was that offside with a defender on the goal line?

people always talk about the goalkeeper when trying to explain offside and i've never understood why

the goalkeeper is irrelevant

it's two defenders between the you and the goal when the ball is played

two defenders

simple

Pretty clear in the Fifa handbook.. Don't know why the announcer was so up in arms...

2nd to last defender: the keeper is also a defender, so when he moves up, he becomes the "2nd to last defender"

When the ball was kicked, both the keeper and one defender (asshat on the goal line) were behind him. It was clearly not offsides.

khune plays some damn good balls. and it's surprising how shocked they were that it was called offsides.

And when the ball was flicked on in the box, the keeper was in front of him. Clearly offsides.

When the ball was headed to the guy who scored the keeper had already pulled forward. Sorry, try again.

2 guys (including the goalie) between you and the goal when the ball is kicked and you're not offsides.

Oh, didn't see the header.

People typically say it's the last defender, but the common assumption is that the goalie will always be back there and you don't have to worry about him.

They'll get lucky one of these times... they just have trouble connecting. There's been some great crosses/kicks so far for SA.

not a big disparity

headers don't matter because everyone on the field is too damn short to make a good connection

this looks like a game where the underdog gains confidence the longer the favorite goes without scoring. and likewise, mexico might tighten up if they can't score quickly in the second half. here's hoping for a late SA goal

mexico has had chances on the ground too. gio dos santos went inches wide and they were a foot or two of offsides with that goal disallowed. mexico have had way more chances

[Edited on June 11, 2010 at 10:56 AM. Reason : they had a cross cum shot from vela that was dangerous too]

[Edited on June 11, 2010 at 10:57 AM. Reason : oh and theyve had 2 blocked shots on dos santos too, i forgot about the early chance]

not debating that mexico has had more chances

but you said they'd be up 2 or 3 with free headers

and in the air the teams are about even

The funny thing is that I can't even hear the vuvuzelas anymore. I am working and watching the game, and my coworkers occasionally walk in and the first thing they ask is, "What is that noise?"

I have totally tuned it out. I hope South Africa can convert some chances in the second half. I am really pulling for them to do well this year.

Work my ass off all the time and do 10 times as much as other people so they probably won't give me shit for streaming this on my 2nd monitor.
