^^She has been damn near impossible to find around campus in my personal opinion. I used to see Holden around quite a bit and he made a lot more effort to make meetings and stay involved with all facets of the university. I have only seen Carol 1-2 times since she was elected. And the monthly meetings that Holden used to make a point to attend and take an active part in have not seen her show up once. We'll see if she makes it this month. Hell even Tom Ross finds time to show up for it.

NCAA just needs to quit perputating the fassade of amatuerism and start paying the players. Or, if you really want to embrace the idea of pure amateur sports, start with the excessive earnings and funnel thgem back to the university system or to charities. Instead, it is given to bloated payrolls for nearly everybody involved in college athletics aside from the players, who are told to 'stick to the honor code'. Nothing but hypocrisy. 1/13/2014 6:23:43 AM |

Quote : | "Roy is on ESPN with Andy Katz:
Katz: Why wont you meet with Willingham ?
Roy: " Its not my job. I dont know any of the professors. I did in the old days but now a days they dont want me to have contact with them. Its all about perception. Its not my world. "
Roy: " I should be determining zone or man to man. Not information in a academic area"
Katz: But can your players read? (paraphrase) Are you 100% sure, confident of that?
Roy" " We do scouting reports, draw up plays on the white board etc. I honestly believe our guys can read. But that's not my world. Our university has standards....but that's not my job (basketball coach not professor)"
....back to on court discussion............
Part 2 - coming up later Roy discusses his future " |

^^ I'm just concerned it will turn into the issue about the athletes not getting educated/paid
As far as I am concerned there are these are two different things:
1. Revenue athletes are getting screwed. This is true and an issue all over collegiate athletics and should change but shouldn't disguise the fact that ...
2. Carolina cheated to get an unfair competitive advantage in ways that basically no other school ever has been proved to have.

wow, that's a pretty poor attitude from Ol' Roy. I don't know if there was any way he could really "win" in an interview like that, but he definitely took the low road.
it's almost an affront/insult to the academic side of the institution. at this point, they should be showing how proactive they are in dealing with this. not "it's not MY responsibility"... IMO if it's affecting his program, then it sure as shit is his (or should become) his responsibility.

Over here this fucking cockgobbler Art Chansky keeps shit talking the naysayers and doing anything he can to excuse the obvious bullshit that has been going on at UNC for the last 2+ decades. Now people at UNC need to shut up or they are going to run ol' Roy away. Boo hoo!
http://chapelboro.com/hoop-it-up/chansky-fed-factor/
Quote : | "Where would UNC be if another casualty of the three-year scandal was losing its Hall of Fame coach who is as sensitive as he is hard-nosed? He has enough problems with a 10-6 basketball team whose talent level is lower than in any other of his previous 10 seasons at Carolina, with no apparent pros on the roster." |
Guess that AFAM program exploding and the free A's disappearing has hit the talent pool for Roy.
Quote : | "but how the P.J. Hairston story unraveled sure looks like Williams took one for the team in the decision to bounce his leading scorer for good." |
Haha after trying to deflect shit as long as he could the writing was on the wall. I don't think Roy made some great stand, I think they just realized they were spinning their wheels to get anything more than Leslie back.
Quote : | "A more plausible explanation is that Hairston was heading for a substantial suspension until more damning evidence came to light while the UNC Board of Governors kept pushing for a stronger stand to demonstrate it was getting tough on athletics. " |
Yea the UNC BOG has been really getting tough with Carolina!
Quote : | "there is a segment of the faculty that is either over-protective of the academic mission or anti-athletics, or both. At UNC, that segment has a louder voice than at many schools playing Division I sports, perhaps because former Athletic Director Dick Baddour came from the faculty side and did not do much to control the volume." |
Damn Dick Baddour for not keeping the professors in line. He should have told them to shut the fuck up and give the athletes their A's.
Quote : | "When Willingham and faculty members like Jay Smith, who apparently have been concerned for years, take their cases to the regional and national media instead of trying to affect change from within, the question of motive arises." |
Yea because we have seen how concerned the BOG and the rest of the UNC leaders are about getting to the bottom of this and making real change. Lets be honest, they had a good thing going for them and don't want to rock the boat.
Quote : | "Willingham supposedly gets off on being “ranked” on several whistle-blower websites. And Smith seems to like the role as ad-hoc spokesman for the faculty, appearing on sports talk shows and as one of the first sources the media contacts. Now he says he’s writing a book." |
Lets report rumor and innuendo now Art. God forbid these people just felt like shit would never be done inside the system. I'm sure he asked Edward Snowden why he didn't take his privacy concerns to his commanding officer.
Quote : | "At the heart of this matter is the small percentage of “less prepared” athletes who are mostly black male football and basketball players" |
You people questioning them are obviously racists.
Quote : | "And it seems logical they would be drawn to African-American history, like Jewish students take courses at the Center for Jewish Studies, musicians major in music, burgeoning actors take drama classes. It is their heritage, so why not study it?" |
Yep I bet these guys all just picked this up on their own and had no influence from the athletic department folks who knew this was a sham program designed to keep the guys eligible.
Quote : | "What is wrong with admitting these kids, most of whom are being given the chance of a lifetime and come from communities that help them become great athletes but do not prepare them for college? Where would they go if they never received college scholarships? Probably nowhere." |
The point you asshole is that these kids aren't being taught anything or helped to advance. They are having their classes and papers done for them. And sure at the end of their time they have a piece of paper to hang on the wall. But some of them probably can't even read it. So the vast majority who never make it pro still don't go anywhere. I have a former UNC football player living in the next building over who doesn't seem to be doing shit either since his departure from the program. He moved in with a neighbor after he knocked her up and has a motorcycle. Baller as fuck! He definitely couldn't have done that shit if he hadn't gotten out of Halifax County and had this huge opportunity from UNC.
Quote : | "There are likely as many 4.0 students who don’t graduate as these less-prepared kids who might have undiscovered learning disabilities or who just test poorly." |
Probably more. What did Roy say only one kid had ever not graduated? YEa I bet they all earned it on their own merit.
Quote : | "A few will become pro athletes, but others will benefit from the socialization they receive on campus and make alumni contacts that could lead to good jobs when they get out of school." |
Yep a few of those black boys will make it, but the rest can be employed as assistants, drivers and yardboys for the rich alumni. So don't worry the university will take care of you.
Quote : | "So what do we have here? Some academic procedures and principles that were violated and have since been corrected. And a continuing controversy that the national press has jumped all over to report on issues they really know very little about. Mostly, a prevailing feeling that the story will never end and keep hurting our reputation and attempts to move beyond it." |
Just some minor procedures and principles? Like the procedure of going to class and learning and the principle that college athletes are there to learn as well.
Quote : | "About this time in Roy Williams’ 15-year tenure at Kansas, he had some problems with an administration that had turned over. It led him to break his pledge to remain at KU and eventually come back to UNC, where he has had even more success as a coach than he did in Lawrence.
At 63, he is unlikely to go to another school or an NBA team. But with grandchildren he adores, more money saved up than he could ever spend and on-again, off-again health issues, Williams could reach the point where he feels under-appreciated and decides to walk away.
A long shot, probably, but a scenario worth thinking about for some people who are letting ego, grandstanding or their prejudices toward athletics and athletes dictate some destructive actions." |

Just got through listening to the Willingham portion of OTL...holy shit that was pretty scathing (despite her shitty public speaking). I can't believe that all UNC did was give them Roy Williams to say..."they teach students, I coach basketball...durr...I'm pretty sure my kid's can read, they know what an X and O is on my dry erase board...durr".
I mean...a ton of damage has already been done and I'm happy with it so far...but this could get really nasty and I would love for that to happen. This should be really interesting.
Holy crap...now listening to the Drake group guy and Dan Kane guy talking about the grade changes and paper classes....jesus. Quote : | "At UNC, we have also sadly admitted to tolerating a system of no-show classes (which preserved eligibility) that existed in our African and Afro-American Studies Department about, but for which only two people have been blamed. Athletes were not the only students in these fake classes, although they were the overwhelming majority in most of them. This scandal was investigated eight times and is the subject of the recent Martin Report (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Academic Anomalies Review, Report of Findings). Each investigation concluded, to my disappointment, that the institution had done nothing wrong; it was the fault of just two people. I remained silent and ashamed from 2010 to 2012 while I waited for my institution to do the right thing – to admit the cheating was system wide, and not just the fault of two people. Finally, I spoke out." |
