not really, what does a team losing intentionally have to do with NC State? Doss seems to think that everyone in the world hates the US enough to humiliate themselves to hurt us. But that is only true for at MOST 70% of the world.6/24/2014 9:35:48 PM |

I had just come around to liking Suarez again thought maybe he had finally grown up... Welp! I actually forsee a 6-12 month ban coming out of this. He just cost himself a ridiculous amount of money as well. 6/24/2014 9:48:04 PM |

I'd say that but then I'd just be accused of being biased. Don't see how this is so much worse than a headbutt in a WC final but it's just so damn dumb that I don't want it to look like I'm even trying to defend it. 6/24/2014 10:33:04 PM |

Hope Uruguay conducts an independent investigation. If Suarez co-operates with that, all charges should be dropped.

That minimum 2 games will be enough to send Uruguay home regardless of what else he gets.

It's less the action and more the definitive proof he is a deranged lunatic on the field. He's now bit three (!) players, been involved in a racist row (tbf I defended him -- Evra admitted to using what Suarez took as a slur but no one in England cared) and kicked the crap out of a ref as a kid allegedly.
He may be a good husband and father but he turns in to a savage on the field. At some point FIFA/UEFA/FA will simply have enough and you can't really blame them. 6/25/2014 7:45:32 AM |
aimorris All American 15213 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah pretty much. I do think there are ways to help him (clearly he needs help) with required counseling and stuff instead of just throwing down a year long ban, which hasn't been done for worse actions on the field. But I won't waste a second arguing for leniency because he gets what he deserves at this point. 6/25/2014 7:54:02 AM |

Is it being seen that way? Zidane was given a 3 game suspension, but since it was his last game, he agreed to and completed three days of community service working with kids... and Zidane was easier to like, imho. although he definitely had his issues.6/25/2014 10:11:03 AM |

Ok, so turnip on tww thinks he should have orthodonic surgery and be suspended for 6 months. So turnip thinks it's worse than a headbutt. I was speaking a little more broadly than just turnip's opinion.
it definitely makes it worse that it's his third time doing it. seriously, what posseses a grown man to bite someone? i would imagine it goes back to his childhood. 6/25/2014 10:33:28 AM |

I was joking. I know sarcasm doesn't work on the internet, my bad. I don't actually think FIFA should make Suarez get braces or ban him for half a year.

ok bullet on tww. The point is, a ban for longer than 3 games is mentioned everywhere you look. Get on twitter, google it, go to any site that covers soccer in depth. Some people want him banned for life for this.6/25/2014 10:53:55 AM |

Cool. You should have just said that in the first place. I'm not sure why you have to be so snarky for no apparent reason. (and turnip, i do realize that you didn't actually think that fifa should make him get braces)
Again, I have to imagine the fact that this is his third time biting someone is a driving factor in those opinions, and that it was on the biggest stage. And getting bit can be pretty serious. Some drunk girl bit me in a bar, through my shirt one time. It was bruised for months and turned all kinds of nasty colors (and no, i didn't deserve it, she was just drunk and crazy and was trying to be "cute". cool story.) 6/25/2014 10:59:18 AM |
aimorris All American 15213 Posts user info edit post |
(I'm not being snarky. You asked if it was being seen as worse than Zidane and somebody before you suggested a ban worse than Zidane's.) 6/25/2014 11:00:16 AM |
Bullet All American 28417 Posts user info edit post |
Again, there might not have been such a big uproar about Zidane because it was the final, and he was retiring, so nobody cared if he was banned for 6 months or life or whatever.
Anyways, whatever, I was just trying to ask if there's a general consensus that this was "so much worse than a headbutt", that's all. 6/25/2014 11:05:35 AM |
aimorris All American 15213 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah that's probably true about Zidane and who he was and where he was at in his career. But let's not just limit the comparison to Zidane's headbutt and include any tackle from behind, elbow, or clear action to hurt a player. It seems like if a player gets a red card and there's the standard ban for violent conduct nobody cares about how reckless or dangerous the challenge was. There's rarely uproar for a long ban after something like that.
This, while incredibly stupid, is not as violent and dangerous as an elbow/tackle. Again, it's stupid to defend him because this is the third time it's happened and I'm not defending him. But players that consistently throw around heavy tackles and elbows aren't punished increasingly more with each instance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1vBWnON9UI for example, in the same game, there's a red card for an obvious attempt to injure the opposing player. That tackle, if a little harder and in the right spot, could have broken a leg. But I saw people arguing that it was a "soft red" or not even one at all. 6/25/2014 11:12:32 AM |
Bullet All American 28417 Posts user info edit post |
Yep, good points. I assume another reason people are in an uproar about this is because the nature of the attack. It wasn't your "normal" swinging elbow or cleat to the calf, it was completely a "non-futbol" play, and the victim didn't even have the ball. Not that that should matter. 6/25/2014 11:22:41 AM |

One last thought on England. People were very happy and optimistic after the Italy game with how they played. As I said then, the Italians simply weren't that good. That win was their only one in ten games in the lead up. Reality was it was two mediocre teams playing each other..
England has A LOT of work to do and doesn't have the talent right now to do it. Even Sturridge (who I think is a stud) was very poor finishing this World Cup. 6/25/2014 11:52:33 AM |

Yep, We lose by 1 to Germany and Ghana beats Portugal by 1, we advance on the Goals For tiebreaker because Goal Difference would be equal. 6/25/2014 11:58:36 AM |

Yes, the second tiebreaker is goals scored. Germany winning 1-0 and Ghana winning 1-0 puts us in on that tiebreaker head to head actually.
Still holding out for Us 2-0 and Ghana 3-0.
OOOH, Aregentina and Iran both going 1-0 today would result in another lot drawing.
Credit to wolfdawg for beating me to it.

Quote : | ""U.S. lose; Ghana win: This is the greatest threat to our prospects of advancing. If the U.S. lose and Ghana win by anything more than one goal, Ghana go through at our expense. If we lose by one and Ghana win by one, it'll come down to goals scored. Right now, the U.S. have scored four goals to Ghana's three; a 1-0 U.S. loss and a 1-0 Ghana victory would still put the Americans through, via the head-to-head tiebreaker.
U.S. lose; Portugal win: Portugal, in light of their -4 goal difference, have a much steeper hill to climb. They need to beat Ghana by a couple goals and hope Germany beat us by a similar margin—something the Germans are in no way incentivized to do, given that any victory over the Americans puts them on top of the group. (Well, that's if you overlook sticking it to their old manager, Jürgen Klinsmann.) In all, Portugal need a five-goal swing to make up the goal difference. As you can see from the graphic above, there are also a few scenarios in which goal difference would end up deciding the Americans' fate in the event of a Portugal win and a U.S. loss. And if Portugal win 2-1 and the U.S. lose 4-0, we'd draw lots."" |
