You're kidding right? There are far dumber things to say and Trump has said lots of them. And the answer to your first question is obviously Republicans.

^^ of course trump said dumber things but not in this speech.

Speech was mostly empty platitudes, apart from the church thing, and lies about taxes and crime.

That was then.
Now, Trump is regularly using teleprompters during his speeches as he attempts to assume a more presidential front ahead of the general election. And he’s right, we don’t even know if the guy is smart."

Ha, I had the same thought when he walked on stage after Ivanka, where did his hand just go? Too much awkward cheek kissing for a non-elite like myself, I really wish we could all agree to go back to simple handshakes.

I couldn't stay awake for most of the speech, but I did wake up to hear him talk about punishing companies who choose to operate overseas and then another time to hear him proclaim churches need free speech rights restored. I agree with something I saw on twitter this morning - what happened to the Republican party that used to stand for limited govt and freedom - instead, we now have a candidate making the same "govt will fix your problems" pitch that the Dems make, albeit to different interest groups. The first debate should be something to behold.

The entire week felt like I was watching a meeting of the Brownshirts. It was downright scary and this is the product of the rise of anti-intellectualism, fear, and the resulting bigotry. I mean holy shit! How can any of this be normalized?

I purposefully read the speech but didn't watch it.

Do you guys think he, in any way, connected with independents? The speech itself seemed pretty dark on paper with a lot of half-truths (it's not lying to say violent crime has ticked up slightly off of the historic lows we have seen the last 10-15 years but it could very be statistical noise and by every metric around its far lower than 2008) but if delivered right I could see it resonating.

*** lol what is he doing? He's actively trying to shit on any positivity last night be have brought him. For fucks sake, this clown has NO self control. Talking about Cruz's dad and JFK again. This guy...

I don't think the law and order thing will resonate. It's too clear that things aren't so dangerous, and peoples' perceptions are out of whack about this, but I don't think it's so out of whack that making this the cornerstone is going to work.

Then there's the fact that between praising the chinese in tianenmen, praising Kim Jon Uns brutality, praising erdogan, praising saddam, it's going to become clear that Trump's idea of "law and order" is closer to martial law than Andy Griffith.

Should we be the slightest bit uncomfortable at Trumps affinity and his campaigns apparent ties to Russia/Putin? Or is it just campaign bs?

** also he is apparently hosting a Reddit AMA on R/thedonald. This can't be real. If this is true he is unabashedly endorsing a horrendously racist white-nationalist demographic.

Why does hosting an AMA on Reddit mean he's endorsing a white-nationalist demo? Not a Reddit user so maybe this is why I don't understand the correlation.

That's a little harsh but there isn't a huge difference between TheDonald and places like StormFront.

I'm not a redditors but I have read some from that forum and it's really, really bad. I'm actually genuinely shocked his campaign would allow it but I guess at this point he figures ue can get away with anything thanks to the other party putting up a terrible candidate.

Read the anonymous comments on any other Republican website

There are plenty of reasonable people among them, but it ultimately devolves into r/the_donald type garbage

But anyways the AMA isn't going to be on r/the_donald so it should be interesting

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/trump-putin-yes-it-s-really-a-thing

Quote :
"... one of the most enduring dynamics of GOP conventions... is more mainstream nominees battling conservative activists over the party platform, with activists trying to check all the hardline ideological boxes and the nominees trying to soften most or all of those edges. This is one thing that made the Trump convention very different. The Trump Camp was totally indifferent to the platform. So party activists were able to write one of the most conservative platforms in history. Not with Trump's backing but because he simply didn't care. With one big exception: Trump's team mobilized the nominee's traditional mix of cajoling and strong-arming on one point: changing the party platform on assistance to Ukraine against Russian military operations in eastern Ukraine. For what it's worth... I am quite skeptical of most Republicans call for aggressively arming Ukraine to resist Russian aggression. But the single-mindedness of this focus on this one issue - in the context of total indifference to everything else in the platform - speaks volumes.

This does not mean Trump is controlled by or in the pay of Russia or Putin. It can just as easily be explained by having many of his top advisors having spent years working in Putin's orbit and being aligned with his thinking and agenda. But it is certainly no coincidence. Again, in the context of near total indifference to the platform and willingness to let party activists write it in any way they want, his team zeroed in on one fairly obscure plank to exert maximum force and it just happens to be the one most important to Putin in terms of US policy..."

"1. All the other discussions of Trump's finances aside, his debt load has grown dramatically over the last year, from $350 million to $630 million. This is in just one year while his liquid assets have also decreased. Trump has been blackballed by all major US banks.

2. Post-bankruptcy Trump has been highly reliant on money from Russia, most of which has over the years become increasingly concentrated among oligarchs and sub-garchs close to Vladimir Putin. Here's a good overview from The Washington Post, with one morsel for illustration ...
Since the 1980s, Trump and his family members have made numerous trips to Moscow in search of business opportunities, and they have relied on Russian investors to buy their properties around the world.
“Russians make up a pretty disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets,” Trump’s son, Donald Jr., told a real estate conference in 2008, according to an account posted on the website of eTurboNews, a trade publication. “We see a lot of money pouring in from Russia.”

3. One example of this is the Trump Soho development in Manhattan, one of Trump's largest recent endeavors. The project was the hit with a series of lawsuits in response to some typically Trumpian efforts to defraud investors by making fraudulent claims about the financial health of the project. Emerging out of that litigation however was news about secret financing for the project from Russia and Kazakhstan. Most attention about the project has focused on the presence of a twice imprisoned Russian immigrant with extensive ties to the Russian criminal underworld. But that's not the most salient part of the story. As the Times put it,

"Mr. Lauria brokered a $50 million investment in Trump SoHo and three other Bayrock projects by an Icelandic firm preferred by wealthy Russians “in favor with” President Vladimir V. Putin, according to a lawsuit against Bayrock by one of its former executives. The Icelandic company, FL Group, was identified in a Bayrock investor presentation as a “strategic partner,” along with Alexander Mashkevich, a billionaire once charged in a corruption case involving fees paid by a Belgian company seeking business in Kazakhstan; that case was settled with no admission of guilt."
Another suit alleged the project "occasionally received unexplained infusions of cash from accounts in Kazakhstan and Russia.""

I am going to preface this with, I am not defending Trump and will never vote for him. His protectionist policies are as much of a red flag for me as any of HRCs issues. But we can still be logical in our arguments against him:

Quote :
"All the other discussions of Trump's finances aside, his debt load has grown dramatically over the last year, from $350 million to $630 million. "
Hasn't he self-financed most of his campaign. I can understand that his debt would probably increase. The concern is how he expects to recoup those expenses.

Quote :
"Post-bankruptcy Trump has been highly reliant on money from Russia"
So this is a bit unclear. Is he getting loans from Russian banks, which if he is blacklisted from all major US banks, could be an understandable move. Or is this saying that he is investing in projects in Russia, expecting a return? Again, there are a lot of companies who have been investing in Russia, as well as Brazil, India, and China. They are called BRIC nations. This is not uncommon.

^^^ but both sides are the same.

If it was a binary Trump-Clinton vote against him even if Clinton was going to spend the next four years in prison. I don't think it's outrageous to say he is simply dangerous.

For all the talk about the liberal media it is them who have normalized his absurdity.

what tg3 alluded to: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/28/us/politics/donald-trump-russia-clinton-emails.html

Quote :
"DORAL, Fla. — Donald J. Trump said Wednesday that he hoped Russia had hacked Hillary Clinton’s email, essentially encouraging a foreign power’s cyberspying of a secretary of state’s correspondence.

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Mr. Trump said, staring directly into the cameras. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

Mr. Trump’s call was an extraordinary moment at a time when Russia is being accused of meddling in the U.S. presidential election. His comments came amid questions about the hacking of the Democratic National Committee’s computer servers, which researchers have concluded was likely the work of two Russian intelligence agencies.

Later in the news conference, when asked if he was really urging a foreign nation to hack into the private email server of Mrs. Clinton, or at least meddle in the nation’s elections, he dismissed the question. “That’s up to the president,” Mr. Trump said, before finally telling the female questioner to “be quiet — let the president talk to them.”"
