Not to allow excuses for the coach, but road wins in the ACC are obviously extremely difficult. And so far, 4 of our 7 ACC games have been away. Clearly we should have beaten Clemson. But we've played well at home and won our games with the exception of a top 5 Duke team.
Lowe's teams have traditionally played stronger the 2nd half of the season (except 2007-08). We still have 5 more home games left. If we win 4 out of 5 of those and beat Wake and UVA on the road, we'll finish .500 in the conference.
But realistically I don't see that happening. Virginia Tech will be tough to beat. UNC will be tough. UVA had a double-digit lead AT Duke - they could be tough. I think we'll be inspired to get payback vs. Clemson. We're capable of beating FSU - we did it twice last season (with Dennis Horner). 2/1/2011 10:56:12 AM |

Quote : | "Lowe addresses the problems, but is it too late? By Tim Hall
After watching N.C. State's 20-point loss to North Carolina on Saturday, it's kind of tough to envision the Wolfpack getting up to play anyone right now. Even the upcoming road game in Winston-Salem is starting to become the furthest from a sure thing.
The Pack were out-hustled, out-rebounded, out-defended, out-everything-ed against the Heels. And when asked what has to happen in order for his team to go on a late season run, Sidney Lowe boiled it down to "get a couple wins" and "scoring".
But it's oh so much more than scoring the basketball. And ironic because it's little things that need to change for N.C. State to have any chance to improve it's 12-9 (2-6) record.
And Lowe didn't forget to mention any of those little things on his radio show on Monday. He touched on defense, rebounding, even a blocking out drill that might drill some toughness into his team, which is something N.C. State needs.
"We stayed on it all day....blocking out and banging and getting guys to really hit each other. What I tried to explain to them is if you don't do it against each other every single time, it's hard to turn it on in a game," Lowe said on his Wolfpack Sports Network radio show. "So you make each other better when we're doing it. They went at it pretty good. Two guys went out with a little bruise, so that was pretty good."
Talk about a needed drill. It was almost to the point where N.C. State should be going through football practice without the pads to increase the toughness. But this is something.
Accountability has been something that's missing. And yesterday Lowe mentioned Tracy Smith and Richard Howell for not being physical enough against UNC's big guys.
"You have to put your body into them and use that strength to get them out of there. We didn't do that well," Lowe said.
N.C. State fans probably will say that it's absurd to be practicing toughness at this stage of the season, but I would argue that the toughest teams go through loose ball and block-out drills all season long to remain....tough.
I've still got to see an inspired performance out of the Wolfpack before I believe it. I stay put that NCAA Tournament hopes are completely lost. But at the very least the problems are recognized.

^^^ that's kinda how I'd look at it. It'd be similar in some ways to O'Brien. Not super exciting or the high upside hire we might want but it's a pretty safe way to get us back to relevant. Plus, just as we'd start to get tired of him he'd be getting ready to retire anyway

I'd be pretty pleased with that. I'd give that hire a B+, only because of the age factor. He probably wouldn't be here in 10 years...but hopefully after 7 or so years of him coaching we'd be at the level where we would be appealing to some top coaches.2/1/2011 7:59:49 PM |

Each spring there are some mid-major names that boil to the surface in March, and some will come along. I think two A-10 coaches may be worth keeping on the radar screen along with Gregg Marshall from Wichita State.
Chris Mack, Xavier - 2nd season as a head coach, led Xavier to another Sweet 16 in his first year. Xavier has been a hotbed for up and coming coaches, he previously served on Skip Prosser and Sean Miller's staffs at Xavier/Wake Forest and Xavier. Still only 41.
Chris Mooney, Richmond - Has at least built Richmond up to being consistently in the upper tier of the Atlantic 10. 38 years old, played his college ball at Princeton. 2/1/2011 10:45:20 PM |

I have my doubts Mack would leave....and even more if I'd want him.
He took over a very very good program left by Miller. I'd like to see how his wins trend...not sure he'll be able to sustain Miller's success.
He's also an Xavier grad, and he genuinely sounds like he has no intentions of leaving Xavier.
