essentially you need a written contract. if you browse 2p2 theres an excellent example of such a contract that was fairly recently discussed in the MTT Community area.

pocket jacks ( Diamond and spades )... i raise, 4 other people call

flop turns a 2 of spades, 6 of diamonds, jack of clubs.... i check, 2nd person raises, everyone calls.

turn..... 9 of diamonds, i raise30% of the pot. One person calls, everyone else folds

river... 10 of diamonds, i raise and the other person insta raises

.... now, im thinking, what are the odds of him hitting his flush on the river.... very slim, so i call.

the son of a bitch turns over a 2, 7 of diamonds.

i mean... who in the fuck calls and raises with a fucking 2, 7 ... and then hits there flush on the fucking river
WTF

fucking bull shit

Raise more. You need to make it a mistake for him to draw to that flush, and only raising 30% is only making him make a marginal call instead of a bad call if you raise more.

Kinda depends -- for example my backer is in Washington state. So exchanging cash is a pain in the ass since it has to be Western Union etc.

can you account for taxes and then give 50% of the net?

yea, but if i just give him cash then irs might try to tax me on the whole winnings. I don't want to pay 100% of the tax for 50 of the take. edit: i figured a contract would work, but i wasn't sure if the irs would try to double tax us, meaning tax me on the win, then him on the 50% take he earns.

the jacks hand...bet the flop dude. 65-80% on turn. but yea, i think checking the flop after you flop a set with the iniative is one of the softest plays in all of poker.

Why not give backer 1/2 of the net winnings after taxes? Odds are the backer is in a higher incremental tax bracket anyway.

What difference does it make if you get a 1099 or W-2G on the spot? This is what I would do...

1. Figure your income tax on income without winnings.
2. Figure your income tax on income with winnings.
3. Subtract Line 1 from Line 2. This is the net taxes paid on winnings.
4. (Winnings - net taxes) / 2 = each persons share of winnings.

Seems like a win/win to me.

i'd say probably better to have a contract in case you get audited and they look at the signed tax forms from the live event showing you made x amount.

I think with a stack that small I'd go ahead and push pre. It would suck if he decided to check fold the flop.

yeah but usually aggressive players are going to c-bet there no matter what hits the flop, and he would've been pot committed after that, he had just the right amount of chips to where I thought he might lay his hand down if I shoved pre, if he had maybe 300 more or 300 less I probably would've shoved

yea, that's a good point from david. he's pretty much getting 2:1 on a call anyway, so you might as well shove.

Yeh anything other than the 10000% standard shove there is criminal.

In theory his calling range with your stack should be identical between 3x-ing or shoving.

Keep in mind we had 6 left in a double or nothing in which the top 5 cash. How do you make that call? I mean it wasn't the smartest play on my part, he could have had AJ or something, but how do you call that with a gutshot.

^I was trying to play somewhat conservatively. I didn't want to get in a big fight with the sb if he had a loaded hand. I was just trying to steal and didn't intend to get too into the hand, until the flop when I was pretty positive I was well ahead.

And what's played so bad about the hand (yes spewwy pre)...but I think f/t/r are all fairly standard..? I'm beating PL08 for nearly 8bb/100 over 40k hands now (1/2-5/10) so I don't think i'm too leakkyyy? Although I don't know too much about limit.

the most likely range for 3 way cap on that flop includes a flush draw + low draw, which you'd be a dog to.

i'd consider it lucky that you weren't.

it's a clear pull situation, and you were pushing.

we are 5 handed -- this is a reasonably high limit -- players ranges = less polar, more balanced

like i said i'm not claiming to be anywhere near excellent at limit O8 -- but I can't imagine that's played terribly

probably slightly + or - ev at best/worst
