Word of God point guard Josh Newkirk told HighSchoolOT.com on Tuesday that NC State offered him a scholarship on Saturday.
The 6-foot-1, 170 pound point guard reclassified at Word of God and is now a member of the Class of 2013. According to ESPN.com, Newkirk is a 4-star prospect.
"NC State is a good school and it is in my backyard," Newkirk said. "I grew up around here and my mom went to NC State too."
Newkirk also has offers from Appalachian State, Arizona and Indiana.
Recently, former Word of God star Torian Graham verbally committed to the Wolfpack. The Holy Rams' T.J. Warren also holds an offer from the Pack, and former Word of God wingman C.J. Leslie just completed his freshman season at NC State." |

NC Pro-Am Tournament set to start on June 30th. New rules are that HS recruits can't participate. Not sure why amateur college athletes can play with pro's in the same organized league, but high school players can't.
Zo & CJL are expected to play, possibly de Thaey and other incoming freshmen as well
Josh Powell bringing his team back too, including Fells 6/22/2011 10:00:53 AM |

I went to the pro-am last year and had a good time. Got to see Harrow, Zo, CJL, Kyrie Irving, the Plumlees, John Henson, Reggie Bullock, Rodney Purvis and a bunch of other bigtime players out there 6/22/2011 4:06:03 PM |

So the change in rules for the pro am wouldnt have effected it that much from last year, as long as incoming freshman can play. There were a few sophomore/junior kids there but I don't remember them making a huge impact. Most of the kids I was there to see were college players, pro players, or incoming freshman. 6/22/2011 4:31:14 PM |

Purvis got to play with our guys last year, and it will also keep people like Tyler Lewis from playing with them this year.
I'll be pretty excited to see DeThaey and our other incoming recruits. 6/23/2011 9:48:09 PM |

I'm certainly not a basketball expert, but I don't see anything about Gottfried's proposed offense that would keep him from playing 3 "guards" at any given time. Especially when 2 of them are 6'4" and extremely athletic. 6/26/2011 2:17:02 PM |

If a coach were to put a non 5 star type of kid who is 6 foot 4 at the 3 spot, then yes, that would be a bad move in most situations ...
But if you have two 5 star quality guys at 6-4 playing the 2 and 3 ... you WILL be able to get away with it... simply because most schools don't have enough decent guards to match up with you. Could be a huge advantage for us considering our lack of multiple top notch bigs.
And we would run the hell out of their defenses as well. 6/27/2011 12:42:47 PM |

ESPN ranks NC State #6 for 2012. Indiana at #1, UNC at #4. Of course, we only have 2 commits and a 3rd & 4th could push us to top 2 (depending on who it is)...
Personally, i REALLY want Amile Jefferson & TJ Warren. Those two guys could give us a potential #1 class...Purvis isn't committing until February 2012, so given that we have 2 scholarships available, I would be more inclined to give it to those two...
Not saying I don't want Purvis (of course I do), but we can't afford to miss out on the other hot prospects who are likely going to commit far earlier than that. 7/7/2011 9:38:05 AM |

He's heading off to Brewster Academy for his senior year where he'll star alongside Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster). Warren began his high school career at Durham Riverside then switched after two years to Word of God in Raleigh, N.C. Now at Brewster, he'll face a tough northern prep schedule.
His collegiate recruitment could have him returning home in the fall of 2011. Warren recently trimmed his college list to seven programs: Georgetown, Florida, NC State, Louisville, Kansas, Texas and North Carolina. Each program, except the Tar Heels offered him a scholarship. The 6-foot-6 small forward with exceptional shooting touch and deep range is the son of a former NC State player.

He mentioned that he talks with Rodney Purvis at least once a week and that he still has a strong gut feeling that he will end up at State. He also said that he has a good relationship with PF Amile Jefferson (10th best player in the country according to Scout.com) and that he has known him since they were 12 years old. After talking with Jefferson, Lewis feels really good about NC State’s chances with him. He honestly feels like NC State has just as good a shot at landing him as they do with landing local product TJ Warren." |

A random recruiting twitter account is not right just because it tells you what you want to hear. Be smart about what information you hear and where it comes from.
