Sprint is rolling out WiMax this year under a service they call Xohm. They already have it in some tests markets, like Chicago. http://www.xohm.com/learn.html
Sprint has also had an on-again off-again relationship with Clearwire, the wireless internet provider, with plans of combining or Clearwire using the Xohm network or something. Last I heard, I think they were "on-again" for some kind of WiMax collaboration http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120162984956525859.html http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/2008-02-10-sprint_N.htm

I have Nextel now. I want a new service and a new phone. I am an Apple user. The obvious selection would be to get the iphone. So from what I am guessing the best thing to do would be to get a 'free' phone and wait for the 3g model? 2/14/2008 8:13:19 AM |

just in case anyone wants to jailbreak their phone (with like 2 clicks)
Here's the original engadget article: http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/12/ziphone-jailbreak-any-version-iphone-out-of-the-box-including/
and the software has been updated multiple times since that article was posted. here's where you can find the software: http://www.ziphone.org/2008/02/ziphone.html
its supposed to do a software unlock just as easily, but I didn't try that functionality since I have AT&T. the jailbreak worked beautifully for me.] 2/14/2008 9:45:50 AM |

With the SDK coming out (hopefully) soon, is there really any point to jailbreaking it now? What can you do with a jailbroken phone that you won't be able to do with a clean one in about 2 weeks? or is it just for people that don't want to wait? 2/14/2008 11:46:36 AM |

no one knows what you'll be able to do once the SDK is released. I kinda doubt they're just gonna open it wide and let anything run on it.2/14/2008 12:49:30 PM |
agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
well, 1) programs written with the SDK may take a while to show up, as they'll have to be re-written to use the new APIs, and 2) it has not been announced yet how the programs will be distributed, like if they have to be certified by Apple or if they have to be added via iTunes or something.
so it's possible (probable) that some of the existing Jailbreak applications will no be ported to the SDK because the developers don't want to, or the developers will have to pay for the SDK, or Apple won't certify or distribute the program for some reason. 2/14/2008 1:07:43 PM |

who knows when the sdk is dropping, or when we'll actually be able to install applications, or what applications we'll even be able to install when we're able.
so yeah, theres a point to it.

i used one the other day (borrowed my bros for a day to check signal where we work mostly) and also just to see how it would affect my daily life. I'm pretty much sold, such a change from my normal routine of email, photos and just responding to people. Anyways I wish they'd hurry up w/ the 3g version but I'm so anxious now I might just go ahead and risk it, my whole companies wireless plan is now expired and I'm going to dump VZ for ATT w/ I think 2 or 3 iphones and the rest of the guys w/ get freebies. 2/22/2008 6:13:33 PM |

Then you'd have both phones and could sell one off to take a little bit of the price off the iphone." |
I've been thinking of doing this whenever the 3g version comes out. My question is what phone do you recommend for highest resale? I don't mind putting up $50 to get a phone that might net me ~$100 on resale. Was wondering if getting a crackberry or a Blackjack II would be the route to go or if a W580i Walkman would be a better option. Or just stick w/ the "best" free phone.
Any advice would be appreciated.2/23/2008 10:12:16 AM |

I really have to ask, why? Mine has been thrown against a wall, used 4-5 hours a day everyday since the day they came out and aside from the screen being cracked from the throw at a wall, it is still almost brand new looking. It's constantly in my pockets with keys, change and knives and in general just goes through a lot of roughness... I can't see why anyone would bother with a case that would make it bigger/impossible to take in and out of your pockets (if its made of rubber its going to stick to your jeans like crazy)
If it were a phone that wouldn't stand up to abuse without a case--then I'd be all for a case. I had one on my treo and most other phones I've had, this phone just doesn't need one though, imo. 2/23/2008 7:14:42 PM |

there are lots of real douchebags doing iphone scratch tests, and if you can get past the fact that they are all generally very douchey and annoying, the results are basically all the same that the glass is scratch resistant for everyday use http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=iphone+scratch+test&search_type=
Ars managed to scratch their by sliding it face-down down a sidewalk, "none of which were visible while the LCD was on"..... http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/iphone-review.ars/13 2/25/2008 7:22:04 PM |

I have a few decent scratches on my screen but its nothing that anyone notices when using the phone. Generally, I'm pretty rough on a phone too. 2/25/2008 8:17:11 PM |

Glass is hard, so it is very resistant to scratches. It's brittle, but being backed by metal protects the glass from bending.
Think about a glass or mug in your sink -- those probably don't have too many scratches after years of use. 2/25/2008 8:18:41 PM |

i accidentally dropped mine at my desk a couple of weeks back, landed front-first on my office chair leg, smashed the glass nicely. it still worked, but i had to get it replaced. it's not indestructable.
that experience encouraged me to look at cases with front-protection as well. unfortunately, i've not seen anything that wasn't either cheap-looking or hard to use. 2/25/2008 9:55:22 PM |

nope it doesn't get those little scratches like my ipod has, the regular ipod screens (I THINK) are plastic, except the touch which I'm pretty sure is also glass.2/25/2008 10:28:18 PM |

i've dropped mine in similar situations several times and it didn't break it (although it's already broke so maybe it bent some and absorbed impact..). It also survived one hell of a throw against a wall so I'm guessing you just got really unlucky. Are all iphones the exact same screen? For some reason I thought I heard about a small change early on... could be wrong though.2/26/2008 1:17:00 PM |

So if mines already jailbroken, i wonder what will happen if i try and update it thru itunes...
nm, i just saw that dude told me to hold off on upgrading: http://www.ziphone.org/
I guess if I want 1.1.4 theres no way to save all the customizations/applications I have installed on 1.1.3 right? can any jailbreakers out there confirm or deny this?
