I have seen a physical therapist, for a couple months (I think it was at the end of last year that I went but don't exactly remember). I still have problems from time to time. My pain doesn't seem to be flared by squats as far as I have observed. Honestly I am usually surprised when it happens because it's never consistently after one particular exercise or anything I can trace it to (except maybe running, which I have almost completely stopped lately). I've been making a point to do more mobility work and self-correction that the PT taught me for the last few months. And again, all of that helps but I still have problems.

We do some form of squats most days. I go 3 or 4 days per week, depending on whether I'm having issues. I do scale if I'm having issues, but squats don't seem to actually hurt anything, even if I do try them when I'm sore. And I've PRed on them by a decent margin since the majority of my issues started last year. Today I am fine again, but last week my left hip was hurting to the point that I couldn't do V-ups because when I went up I had stabby pains. And I couldn't bend over.

The orthopedist and PT both told me icing wouldn't do any good because my pain is coming from too deep in the hip for it to penetrate that far. And I do take fish oil.

So yeah, I am extremely frustrated because I feel like I am doing everything I should be doing and still having problems that hinder my progress (and just suck in general, because I like walking and sitting and the like). So decided to try the NSAIDs, I guess as a last ditch effort before going back to the doctor. The last time I went to an ortho that's one thing he suggested I try. And I did want an MRI, but he said insurance probably wouldn't cover it because he didn't think I needed one. I had to pretty much beg him to tell me anything other than giving me a rx for voltaren, which ended up with him saying "well I can send you to PT if you really want it ..."

Maybe I just come off as "I don't know what I'm doing so I obviously just hurt myself being stupid" so they write me off as not having any bigger problems. I don't know. I have run out of other ideas. I'm not a doctor, PT, nutritionist, trainer, whatever, and I've seen all of those and am doing the best I can to follow their advice and still having trouble.

Sorry for the novel. Just very frustrated.

This has been an issue for months and you still don't have justification for an MRI? Crazy. Drugs are not the answer, but I can understand your frustration and desire to feel better.

I'd start keeping close track of when you feel it and the movements that are hindered when you do. A WOD with tons of reps, etc. Also, are most of the WODs you do long or are there shorter ones? I find doing too many intense 12 min+ WODs in a week hinders performance and aggravates Issues because of form break down. I'm surprised a physical therapist couldn't shed more light on your issue. Def sounds like a hip flexor, TFL, or posts that's getting inflamed.

Would you say that your mechanics for squats is pretty good?

I totally agree. I have always avoided drugs if at all possible. And it's not me saying an MRI isn't justified. I would love one, but not paying out of pocket for it when it really should be covered.

I've had hip flexor issues my whole life, even before my accident. I didn't lift or run for very long before it, but if I'd walk a lot or be generally active more than usual I'd be pretty sore in my hips for a few days. Now it's on a different level though. I'm not sure if it's related to the accident (they said probably not) or my increased activity level, but I really want to be able to maintain (and increase) my activity level. So I am not just going to throw in the towel and decide that exercise hurts me and stop doing it, which I feel like is what docs seem to want me to do. Or take up Pilates or something.

I think my squat mechanics are good. The coaches tell me it's good, and it's my strongest lift.

[Edited on May 22, 2012 at 4:29 PM. Reason : oh and WODs vary a lot in length. Some are 2 minutes, some 30. ]

Weird question but how is your flexibility in your glutes and hamstrings and also your strength in your glutes and hamstrings? if there are no issues with function there, the only other thing I can think of would be weak connective tissue in your hips, in which case it could be beneficial to take a couple weeks and do higher rep work before returning to heavier loads under 5 reps.

My hamstrings can be kind of wonky. After doing RDLs I always feel like they are wound-up rubber bands the next day. That was true even when I was doing them with pretty light weights when I was working with you. I am guessing that says something about their flexibility. Usually they seem to have decent range of motion but on those days I can't touch my toes.

I would have to look up the other TWWisablog post from when I saw a PT a few months ago, but I am pretty sure one of my hamstrings was stronger than the other. It was the right leg, broken side, which he thought was interesting.

I have no idea how to determine what flexibility of my glutes is

Do you remember the stretch we did a long time ago where you did pigeon pose with your leg at hip height on a box (massage table)? That or go sit on a lacrosse ball and see if you have any tight bits.

Again, I have no way of knowing for sure, but it could possibly be that your hips are compensating for weak glutes and hamstrings. How do your RDL and Deadlift numbers stack up to your squat numbers? Do you ever do good mornings or direct glute/hamstring work?

I haven't done the pigeon pose standing in a while, actually, but we do it sometimes on the floor after workouts. I will throw that back in. I use my spiky massage ball as I still don't have a lacrosse ball.

RDL I don't really know because that isn't a lift I've ever tried to max my ability on. It's not difficult for me to do, just makes me stiff afterward. Deadlifts I haven't maxed either but do push myself to heavier weights on those. I would guess my deadlift is slightly weaker than my squat, but by like 10 or 15 pounds.

[Edited on May 22, 2012 at 5:24 PM. Reason : I can't think of any direct GH work. If we do it, it's not often. ]

^ have you provided details on your hip issue? I looked back a couple of pages and didn't see it. I have something in my hip area that flares up from time-to-time. Basically I have severe pain right in the area where my leg meets my crotch. I can barely walk when it happens. I have a pretty strong pain tolerance, but when it flares up it will make me cringe in pain with every step.

I found a stretch that gives immediate relief and keeps it in check. I do the stretch before and after nearly every workout and the only flareups I have now are when I go long periods without working out (as a result of not stretching often enough.)

I basically put myself in this position:

Rather than stretching towards my toes I stretch to towards the yellow square in the bottom left side of the picture. Whatever is wrong, whether it's scar tissue or something else, is relieved when I do this. I'll perform the stretch several times a day when it flares up, but as long as it is incorporated into my workout routine I rarely have a problem now.

I know it's a long shot and your problem is probably something totally different, but I hope it gives you some relief.

It's been an ongoing thing. I talk about it from time to time in various threads. I've always had a little hip pain. I was in a car accident a bit over 2 years ago and broke my pelvis in 3 places. I had started lifting a few months beforehand, and was back in the gym about 3 months afterward. Since then I have had some major hip pain issues and have seen a number of doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists, etc. and whatever they tell me seems to help but not alleviate my pain. I am similar to you in that I have a high pain tolerance and am generally pretty good at sucking it up, but this really hurts.

I will try that stretch too in the way you described. Thanks.

I am also going to add more glute/ham stuff and see if I can correct it if I am dealing with a strength imbalance.

I am rooting for Julie Foucher this year at the Games. Camille Bazinet is over rated. She is pretty, and that is always a plus media wise. She struggled with the 70lb .one armed snatches.

So I'm not gonna lie some of this crossfire stuff is creeping me out, it seems almost cultish.

Only instead of who's gonna drink the punch it's who's gonna power clean the weight they aren't ready for

It's spamming my Facebook accross about a dozen friends just gives me a weird vibe.

My sister is about to hit her 3rd trimester and is still going hard. If any of you Raleigh folks see a pregnant lady crushing it in Crossfit, it's probably her. I feel like her daughter is going to come out of the womb with a kettlebell in one hand and rugby ball in the other.

Oh yeah. Annie.

Despite how "manish" most people think these girls look, the truth is, most girls don't look like that because they're not training at competition. And besides, you know how difficult it is, and the amount of dedication it takes to look like that ( so much muscle), and be that strong? Some girls look more proportionate with muscles than other because of their genetics. I am naturally skinny, but I would have to eat a ton of food and train a ton to look like that. Most girls at regular CF boxes still look normal.

This is to the girls who don't want to do Crossfit because they don't want to get "big". For what it's worth....

^^ You still at it? How's it going?

I had to drag myself in this morning, but glad I went because I feel pretty great now after 20 minutes of pain.

10 minutes to find OH Squat Max - ended up at 75 pounds, which is a lot lighter than I think I'm capable of but I was at the end of time and I was playing it pretty conservative because it's not a super confident lift for me

Clap Pullups: 4 x 6-10 - mine were more like microsecond of hands off the bar pullups
Partner Leg Toss: 4 x 10

Tabata “Fun”... (for cumulative rep count) 8 rounds of each (20 seconds on, 10 rest), about a minute rest between stations
Pushup
KB Deadlift (32 kg / 24 kg)
V-Up
Thruster (40lb DBs / 25 lb DBs)
Calorie Row

318. Thrusters were death.

Yesterday's WOD was one of the worst/most difficult I've gotten through since starting a few months ago.

3 ROUNDS
400m run, 10 jump squats every 100m.
12 push press (95lbs)
10 pullups
8 power snatch
6 burpees
40 double unders

I'm not sure if I want to go today. I'm still beat.

Still working with my doctor on the back issues I mentioned on the previous page. I've been swimming 2-3 times a week since the issues popped up, but he said it would be ok to start working out again as long as I stayed away from pretty much anything with a barbell...No dead lifts, cleans, presses, weighted squats, etc. until we get things straightened out.

Today I did:
500M Row
20x Air Squats
15x Push ups
4 Rounds

Donation and charity to fund a private business? Give me a break.

Hot white chick wants free money to fund her childhood business dream. Anyone else see how ridiculous that is?

Maybe I am just a hater, and a little bitter, from all the hard work I've had to put in to raise a fraction of what she's trying to raise through the kindness and philanthropy of her "fans".

Ecstatic for free money? Absolutely, I would be. But, I don't live in fantasy land nor am I narcissistic enough to propose $10,000 a plate dinner.

I'd say if she could pull it off, she'd probably blow through the cash and her business would fall on her face. Unless she could leverage her T&A and crossfit stardom even more for support.

Business is hard, a little easier if you have gobs of cash to throw at your problems for other people to figure out.

I've been considerably lucky with my venture so far, and that's on top of putting in ~90hour weeks and my livelihood. If this chick slingshots in to a successful business career off of crossfit sheeple, then I may need re-evaluate my anti-crossift attitude and conform so I can feed off the herd.
