B-sides from the new Flaming Lips album.

hxxp://rs256.rapidshare.com/files/270027932/Flaming_Lips-B_Sides_EP-2009.zip

Found the link on Hipinion. I think they're more accessible than the 3 tracks on the album preview EP.

speaking of grizzly bear, apparently jay-z showed up at their show last night in nyc.

Quote :
"They're an incredible band," he said. "The thing I want to say to everyone — I hope this happens because it will push rap, it will push hip-hop to go even further — what the indie-rock movement is doing right now is very inspiring. It felt like us in the beginning. These concerts, they're not on the radio, no one hears about them, and there's 12,000 people in attendance. And the music that they're making and the connection they're making to people is really inspiring. So, I hope that they have a run where they push hip-hop back a little bit, so it will force hip-hop to fight to make better music, because it can happen, because that's what rap did to rock."

"When rock was the dominant force in music, rap came and said, 'Y'all got to sit down for a second, this is our time.' And we've had a stranglehold on music since then," Jay said. "So I hope indie rock pushes rap back a bit, because it will force people to make great music for the sake of making great music." "

I'm giving the new Avett Bros. a listen for the first time this morning. I'll post first impressions later this morning. Im listening on my computer, but hopefully i'll be able to give it a full listen in my truck this weekend and get a much better feel for it.

ok...let me preface my initial reaction that i've heard some of these songs live and some through the EP they released a few months back.

I consider myself an Avett fan, and most fan reviews and opinions lack criticality. So I'm going to try and be neutral here. Also, i don't write too many reviews so if i use the wrong terminology or anything let me know. Honestly I am a little disappointed. The record sounds great and is polished but I feel like it lacks range. But perhaps it's not lacking range, but is more focused than their previous albums. Even Emotionalism bounced back and forth between the riotus noise infused jams to the mellow ballads, but I & Love & You seems to stay on a linear path with many of the tracks sounding too familiar to one another. But like i said, this could be attributed to maturity if you want to assume that. Kick Drum Heart may be the only one that really explodes out of the speakers and even it is somewhat light in comparison. The vocals are much more polished, as that signature scream/yell isn't heard much at all. As i said, the tracks really don't reach the pace to allow for it. Also, almost all of the songs are Piano driven, which isn't a bad thing. Some people don't like their banjo/string beating stylings and if that's you this album may be a little easier on your ears. For those that like their eccentric ways, you may feel like they've been somewhat tranquilized here. On the scale of albums by TAB this one fits closely with The Gleam duo in my opinion.

As i said in an earlier post, this is only my first full run through and I'm listening to it again as we speak. Is it a good album, yes. Is it the breakthrough album that I was expecting or that has been alluded to? Well, i don't hear it yet. Agree, disagree? Like i said, i'm no music critic..just trying to give an honest opinion.

I felt the same way at first but after listening to the whole thing for the past few weeks I really like it- granted some of it is very different and I can see how it will turn some people away on the first listen but it really has grown on me

The album is all filler with nothing that pops. The banjo still doesn't fit. They need to go with a 4 string banjo.

Lots of stuff leaked recently: Jay-Z, Mountain Goats, Atlas Sound, new Grizzly Bear single with Michael McDonald (odd), and all of those Radiohead Special Editions should be out there. Fun.

Listen to Gather, Form, & Fly, then listen to the over produced, too much piano utilizing, still using the wrong banjo nonsense that is the new Avett Brothers album. The similarities are there. The big difference is Megafaun did it right and the Avett Brothers failed miserably.

Actually GF&F is probably one of my favorite albums of the summer.

Would not surprise me at all if the Avett Brothers are just another one of those cultish bands that tries to get too big for its britches and fails miserably whilst making the transition to a major record label.

Clearly Columbia had something to do with the direction of the album, and probably pushed their release date back, etc etc

Happens waaaay too many times, and will perhaps be the cause of the decline and inevitable death of the Avett Brothers.

Of course, this is abit much assumption considering I haven't listened to the album, but tonight, it's getting its chance...
